This will forever remind me of a conference I went to in Toronto. I'm from Northwest Pennsylvania and had moved to Phoenix for graduate school. I loved it in Phoenix, but I was really homesick that first semester and kind of tired of the oppressive heat all the time. I went to a conference in Toronto and it just felt like home and it was 2016 and this album had just been out and I listened to this song on repeat. It will always be intertwined with that trip and the crazy feelings of home and nostalgia I felt on the streets of Toronto, meeting strangers, walking around to all the pubs after the long days were over. A happy time for me.

There is actually a video in which he talks about coming up with the lyrics. The rungs of ladders part is inspired by a movie scene he saw. He never mentioned anything about tarot in it, though it may be implied as well. He says he likes to deliberately leave a lot of his songs open to some Interpretation
