When this episode aired, we lived in Deposit, New York for 5 months since we left East Keansburg, New Jersey. I was 5 years old watching this on WBNG Ch 12 Binghamton at 7pm.
hello Peter, back in 1988, Wheel in central Iowa aired at 6:30 pm on KCCI-TV Channel 8, now as of 2016, it is on WHO-TV Channel 13. I've always been a Wheel fan, thanks for the video!
I miss this old version Wheel Of Fortune as well. At the same time, I also wish that they would put larger and more 4-digit dollar amount wedges on the wheel: like a $3,000, $4,000, $4,500, $6,500, $7,500, $8,500, and $9,000 space, and some regular, spendable 5-digit, dollar amount wedges on the wheel as well: like a $10,000, $15,000, and a $20,000 space! Someone could accumulate a 6- figure dollar amount in the 4th round: especially to catch up with the other 2 players! It would be so cool to see someone win the main game with $200,000 or more, before the bonus round. Also, I think that they should add a $2,000,000 and $5,000,000 wedge, bonus round prize to the wheel. They could put the $2,000,000 wedge on the wheel in round 2, and the $5,000,000 wedge on the wheel in round 3. Of course, as with the $1,000,000 wedge, the $2,000,000 and $5,000,000 wedges would also be Bankrupt space-wrapped. Just like the $1,000,000 wedge, the $2,000,000 and $5,000,000 wedges would be payable over 20 years, or as one lump sum after taxes.
I live in Maryland too and used to watch Wheel on WMAR. Seeing the ads, watching Wheel from its glory days, and hearing Ken Phillips with the familiar WMAR jingle takes me back to my childhood. Thanks a million for uploading this and I hope the money helped with the kids' tuition! :)
1988 was also the year that RSTLNE was packaged into bonus puzzles beforehand, the year that the shopping era stopped, and the year announcer Jack Clark died.
In Bonus Round, still require 5 consonants and 1 vowel. "R, S, T, L, N, E. Pick 3 more consonants and a vowel" is only applied from this year, in September.
Very nice Peter. This was back when I used to watch every night. And then I’d go listen to “Stuck In a Closet With Vanna White” by Weird Al Yankovic. 🎶☺️ I don’t suppose you’re from Bradford, England? One of my investment properties is in Leeds.
+Alexander Edward Pytko I know, right?? God, I felt so horrible for him! I mean, I understand that someone must win and someone must lose... but to lose THAT way?? I would have just broke down on camera. No joke. Man, does that ever suck.... -_-
+J Miller +Alexander Edward Pytko - Don't worry; Phil is still an OB/GYN doctor - he delivers babies! I Googled his name. Bringing lives into the world is much more rewarding than $9,500.
Why would he choose to play for $25,000? He could have played for the car which is worth over $40,000 and then sell it for the money. Or even better play for that diamond necklace which was worth $62,000 and then sell it. Would have made so much more money.
His wife might have wanted to keep those, though. Imagine you choose the diamond necklace and she says: "You got that for me! Darling!" This way it's nice and clear. $25000 - worth significantly more back then - to pay for the kids' college like he said.
B/C everybody wanted that cash. Which is why starting with the 1989-90 season it would go to picking one of five envelopes on a stand with the word WHEEL. These days you have the small wheel to spin up an envelope and it could be worth up to $100,000 or even...A MILLION DOLLARS...not to mention cash and a car or two.
Not if he could afford the Taxes on the car itself to boot. That’s still a very common issue on game shows. We still have people today who win a car on The Price is Right and end up having to decline it because the taxes are too steep.
Vanna looked the prettiest in her first appearance. I think it's because they highlighted her natural beauty. After they started to do too much with her hair and makeup.
+Alexander Edward Pytko There were times when round 4 would be played with $3,500 - I could never figure out when that would occur...I am betting now that if round 4 is in the same act as round 3 (no commercial break in between), the $3,500 is played again. I think that would prevent contestants from trying to breeze through round 3 too quickly just to get to the $5,000 round, to play a bunch of those. Today, it seems they can't even get far enough into round 4/$5,000 without running out of time!
Alexander Edward Pytko During the month of cash (which became permanent), round 1 was $1000, round 2 was $2500. Rounds 3 and 4 were $3500 with round 5 and more played at $5000. A few games got to 6 rounds.
For my reasons the letters became a common staple since 1981 when Pat debut during Teen Week and it may had helped or bust out chances for prizes. By 1988 between MG Kelley's gig to the return of Charlie O'Donnell, RSTLNE became starting letters with extra help of 3cs/1vwl and reduced the guessing time. It's worth noting that with the debut of the new method of the bonus round, Same Name became a new category before 1989 when that new season introduced the Ampersand (&). Lot of history to dig into.

I was in tomb of my mother. Time flies

I liked the way that Vana had turned the wheels in the puzzles
I liked her outfit in this episode.
Merv Griffin did also 😉 I wish she still spun around coming on stage like she did in the '80's!

The Shopping Era was still happening on NBC Daytime version in 1988.
Birmingham, Alabama WBRC-TV Channel 6 ABC era at 6:30 after the WBRC 6 News at 6:00 with Scott Richards, Janet Hall, Mike Royer, and Eli Gold
In Bonus Round, still require 5 consonants and 1 vowel. "R, S, T, L, N, E. Pick 3 more consonants and a vowel" is only applied from this year, in September.
Almost, the Bonus Round changes happened on October 3rd 1988. The first 20 shows of Season 6 still had the original BR rules.
Thanks for sharing!
Who else grew up with this game show?
The shatter proof jars were the start of a now new continent in the ocean made out of plastic waists.

It was the Stephen L Miles ad that got me smiling...

Love that 80s look...

0:53 Pat being a smartass like always!
Glad his fn ass is retiring
At 17:25, POOR PHIL! He looks so heartbroken! He finally gets on the board, BIG TIME and look what happens!
+Alexander Edward Pytko I know, right?? God, I felt so horrible for him! I mean, I understand that someone must win and someone must lose... but to lose THAT way?? I would have just broke down on camera. No joke. Man, does that ever suck.... -_-

So what did he end up having to take home?
Much like on the 1 particular Episode of the past Game Show Press Your Luck where the Fortune Teller Whammy showed up.
...and this was before they started giving out $1,000 consolation prize. Poor Phil did go home with nothing.
11:20 F Scott Fitzgerald is the author of “The Great Gatsby”.
18:23 - That original Final Spin bell was used on Art Fleming's "Jeopardy!" when the round ended.
Wheel of Fortune 2000 to 2010
Is the channel owner the same as the peter in this episode? If so that is awesome. What’s up peter.
Good episode
Can you try to have the versions of the 2000 with Vana turning the letters each somebody guesses a letter that is in the puzzles
23:58 - TSRNDE instead of RSTLNE?
"D" was often picked in place of "L", so much so the show contemplated giving "D" but "L" was slightly ahead overall.
Wow, 6 rounds of game play on WOF 1988!!

Vanna was a eye catcher back then lol
Still is.
She doesn't age lol...neither does Pat!
Yung Dynamic ... so was pat 👍
She still gets it done.
She was stunning
*Bell Dings* Time's Running Out!
Wow! Playing another round with the $3500 space still on the wheel?! I thought they waited until the $5000 space was on the wheel to do that.

Even in the 90's, they'd play round 4 with the $3500 wheel. It really depended on how much time it took the first three rounds to run.
taste less commercials in this video
I see why the rstlne is automatic now

Poor Vanna. Some of the clothes she has to wear! This one was just silly.
A 12 karat diamond bow tie lolololol. Long live the 80s.
