- The first Jackson Double Rhoads + "Big Red" Guitar: Dave Linsk of Overkill & Robbin Crosby of RATT. The Double Rhoads was the father of the Jackson King V. Only 12 were ever made, only one of which was a single humbucker as seen here. The turquoise zebra pattern example was the original design of Dave Polinski of Overkill, who would later go by the stage name of Dave Linsk. These models had larger bodies and were constructed by placing two Randy Rhoads bodies together. The zebra model has an exaggerated cut away for better fret access. "Big Red" was the famous guitar of Robbin Crosby of platinum selling band RATT. It was this exact guitar that really made the body style famous and ensured the Jackson King V would be a wildly successful design used later by James Hetfield of Metallica and Dave Mustaine of Megadeth amongst many others.
Robin Crosby RIP wow that was the first name you said. The King V . Always loved Robins guitars.
Yeah man, most people don't realize he is what the "King V" is named after
Robbin's guitar has always been a favorite! it's iconic to Me!
Pretty cool to see and hold it in the flesh!
@@EssexRecordingStudios How many places it's been! that beast has a ton of character!!
Robbin was a TOWERING big guy, fit him perfectly... god bless. 🔥
Keep them coming Keith. God bless Robbin Crosby. I saw Ratt support Ozzy at Hammersmith in the 80s. Robbin had moved on to Jackson Firebird's at that point. Saw one advertised for sale several years ago. I'm hoping this guy has it! :)
Thanks man! You will see the Robbin Crosby "Instant Sex" firebird in the next videos ;)
Robbin traded his white Double Rhoads to CC Deville sometime around 1986 for a vintage Gibson Firebird, which prompted Robbin to have several Jackson Firebirds built... he liked the Firebird design as it was a more practical shape than his King V's. I have no idea what CC did with the white King V (probably traded it for coke).
Regards 🎸
I recently discovered some photos from Ozzy & Ratt at Sheffield City Hall 1986, and Robbin is pictured playing a black King V and a cream coloured Jackson Firebird with some kind of drawings on it. Hideous guitar though. Much prefer the RR and the King V.
The Jackson King V is my favorite guitar. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Works of art!
Very cool guitars it's really nice seeing those old Jackson's thanks
Have more coming dude!
Nice man 🤘 Love all 3, I'm a Jackson fan through & through 👌
Yeah these are some insanely rare guitars!
Holy hell, I remember seeing the Big Red on Jackson Guitar Palace. What an amazing forum and archive it was.
Would love a review on Robbin Crosby custom Jackson Firebird and reverse Firebird
Too cool. Just amazing guitars. ♥️🤘♥️
When I was a teenager my buddy's brother had a badass Jackson guitar on a stand right in the living room and nobody was allowed to touch it!! Oh man it use to drive me mad. I could play a little and I wanted a nice real guitar so bad.. I'll never forget the way it looked sitting there.. I fell in love with Jackson guitars right there.. I loved the shark fin inlay and most of all the head stock looked so heavy metal.. oh man I wanted that guitar so bad.. it was dark blue and just stunning.. its sitting there plugged in to an amp and nobody was allowed to touch it!! Drove me crazy!!! I eventually got my very own Jackson.. but I still dream about that dark blue guitar sitting there like that. Oh so beautiful. . If your a guitarist u know how bad u want to feel a nice guitar when u see one.. it's like a woman.. u want so bad to pick it up and touch it.. damn !!
000454 Robbins was first..
And of course he HAD TO have 454...right? Who knows why..first correct guess gets respect!
Oh I bet.
Wow! Those RR's are straight killer!!! Damn!
That white one is beautiful!! Made for heavy metal!
Thanks man I agree!
Wow, what a crib! Interior Decorator has Total class!#🎸🔥🤘🏻!
Yeah man his place is rad. Loads of H.R. Giger
They belong in a museum.
This place is like a museum!
I love Jacksons. So nice.. I love the way the play the way they sound and damn they all look so cool. I've always wanted one with a reverse head stock. They look so freaking mean when they have the reverse head stock
Im learning a lot with this channel!!
That's great Flavio! That's what we are all here for :)
God I wish King was still alive. I saw Ratt and Bon Jovi in the 80s. I love big tall sexy blondes like him! RIP ROBBIN 💕💕
That's great Kim!
you're fucking awesome Keith... thank you sir!
You're welcome dude!
Thx so much for sharing!
No problem man! Glad you enjoyed
I think it would be cool if there was a Jackson kv1 up there with those guitars and a old kv2
ESP is using that bottom cutaway on their V and Alexi models. Didn’t know Jackson started that.👍🏻🤘🏼
It's also on the ESP/LTD Mille Petrozza MK-600. That cutaway makes life more fun.
👍🏾 prolly all ebony fretboards? Best I’ve ever played
Unbelievable!!
I know man! What a collection!
Im looking for a jackson classic v, like in the video round and round
Was Robin's actual Big Red??? Freaking Amazing
Gives you goose bumps doesn't it!
That's insane! Theres alot of guitars out there that was owned by him, but he owned a shit ton of them. But this is one of them that Truly matters. This is the guitar he used for all Ratts pre-Overproduced stuff. I'd love to play "The morning after""You think your tough".... and on and on..... Damn!!!
His Big Red was sitting in a pawn shop here in Los Angeles for several months. It was pawned to fuel Robbin's drug habit.
@@acegibson9533 That's wild man. Some crazy stories for sure. It's in safe hands now
@@EssexRecordingStudios Robbins white Double Rhoads (Angel) he traded to CC Deville for the white '64 Gibson Firebird he's playing in the "Dance" video. Who knows if CC still has it or where it ended up.
I remember the early days of the internet and the first thing I looked up was Jackson guitars and stumbled on robin Crosby’s guitar collection when he was still alive , he had a lot of Jackson’s , I think Ratt and thrash metal helped Jackson in the early 80’s , loved robin and warrens charvel sand Jeff hanneman punk sticks red soloist , Jeff’s Jackson has to be a 85 or 86 soloist , he was playing it on the reign in blood tour
That's awesome Bill!
Maybe it’s an 84? He may have not gotten it delivered in time for the hell awaits tour.
Robbin's Big Red has a broken headstock. It was fixed at the San Dimas Jackson factory by Mike Shannon. It was broken in Dallas when Ratt was playing clubs on their days off opening for Billy Squier. A drunk football player accidently knocked it over.
I didn't know that story! Very cool info
Robin was a cool dude. RIP
For once, someone who actually knows how to do interior decorating correctly and with true inspiration.
Looks pretty rad there, doesn't it!
Used to play with dave... what a goof
That's really cool man
Robbin Crosby's nick name was 'King' because he was so tall (legend has it he once kicked Chris holmes' ass!) so it became known as the King V
I did not know that Paul! Thanks for the info!
@@EssexRecordingStudios Nikki Sixx always called him King, he talks about it in his book. Real shame how Robbin ended up. A lot of thrash guys love the King V but don't realise it's called that because of a glam dude from Ratt!
@@paulstickles8236 Very true. This info is well known in the Jackson world.
Chris Holmes also auditioned for Ozzy and played Jackson guitars. He had a double small fin V guitar. He also loaned Eddie Van Halen an Explorer for recording.
Paul Stickles Nikki Sixx gave him the “King” name
I thought Vinnie Vincent was one of the first people to use the double rhoades? I will definitely get one built from the custom shop someday.
What pickups does the Robin Crosby Jackson have?
That's a good question. I would have assumed hand wound pickups by Jackson, but maybe some of the experts here will know
Robbin used custom wound Seymour Duncan JBs until the "Reach For The Sky " era Reverse Firebirds and V's. Starting with the "Way Cool Jr." Firebird Reverse he had Tom Anderson pickups (not sure what model). After that he left Jackson/Charvel in late '89 and used Dirty Fingers once he got a Gibson endorsement.
Is it possible to get a double rhoads custom made for you from jackson?
Yeah I've seen them do it
DUDE!1 this is what wet dreams are made of,,
Thanks Nick 🤘🤘
HEY MEN YOU ARE AMAZING!! JACKSON IS THE BEST!!
Thanks man!
So is that the actual Big Red owned by Robin? If so, how the the owner acquire it?
It is the actual Big Red and it was purchased directly from Robbin
@@EssexRecordingStudios it was so surreal to watch this video. I grew up on Ratt and the the 80s and was able to see the evolution of Jackson guitars. Keep up the great work
There's some bad stories of people ripping Robbin off, him trading them for drugs and him just selling them super cheap to get money. In the late nineties, I was playing in Myrtle Beach and a dude in a road band said he'd bought one from somebody that acquired one from Robbin. Not sure if it was true or not, it was a Charvel I believe, it had Ratt tour stickers all over the case. This was before his death. Very sad story, indeed. Nice to see one of his former axes being looked after and appreciated.
Plug them IIIIN!! Let's hear em'!
That will have to done in the next videos!
I don't doubt it's authenticity, but a couple of things are off about Big Red; the guitar originally came with the a Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz pickups per Robbins choice... they seem to be replaced with the early "in house" uncovered Jackson pickups with black screws and slugs (?!). And, obviously someone also pulled the original Black Floyd Rose from this guitar.
You know what... I think maybe he swapped the Floyd on the Polinski and Big Red; look at the mounting studs... they're chrome on Polinski's and Black on Big Red.
You could be right. The Polonski Floyd and tremolo arm look more like worn away coating revealing stainless steel underneath to me though. I imagine these guitars would go through some changes over the decades and passing hands through different guitar techs. I'm not sure what the spec was in the guitar on the day Robin ultimately sold it on
@@EssexRecordingStudios Who knows. Robbin supposedly traded his white Double Rhoads to CC Deville for the '64 Gibson Firebird Robbin is playing in the Dance video. I'd love to know if CC still has it or what happened to it.
So it was called Double Rhoads and then it was renamed to King V?
as he said in the video the King V is smaller than the Double Rhoads
Zakkpaulo Yeah, by the way I’m more of a Randy Rhoads guitar guy.
Yes correct the first design was the "Pointy V" seen in the other video which had no headstock logo and was done around 1981 and booked as a Charvel. At around the same time the Randy Rhoads model was being developed and so this Double Rhoads was the evolution of the Rhoads and Pointy V...then comes the King V with smaller body and also different construction method if you look at those seems in the paint from where the wood is joined
Essex Recording Studios Thank you for the information Keith! Keep up the great videos!
If those guitars could talk...
Yeah man, luckily some of these have enormous amounts of documentation
I need one, I’m a tall guy
Man….. is that Robin’s actual big red guitar?
It is indeed!
Jackson RRRR
Haha yes exactly
Just watched the ratt video you think your tough. This guitar is on it
$1186 lol I spent $5200 for my RR CS
Given inflation, $1183 in 1983 would be $3045 today.
Hmm, for a Custom Shop Jackson with all those options, he really got a great deal!
please slow down your camera moves....
