I have a similar device with a longer handle that we used over an open fire at our camp. It is cast aluminum. Still have it 55 years later and it still works great.
@@addi_gg That's why we have lined cans now. If you look at the inside of your soda can or canned goods, they have some sort of lining or coating. My friends don't believe me but if you cut open a soda can, they have a thin plastic coating on the inside. As for the pans, I have no idea but I would imagine that if the lining is gone, it would be a good idea to change them out.
I own this and have a tip for you........when doing greasy items, do not flip the pan. I use a rubber spatula and turn mine over by hand. And I love how it cooks. Also, you don't always need to clean in between uses, depending on what you cook. The grilled cheese for example, just take a paper towel while pan is still warm and just wipe it off. I find that the pan lasts much longer. Hope this helps.
I've had this for a couple months. One sandwich I make and really like is just a toasted sandwich with cheese and sliced meat, with no butter, just bread on dry. I use different types of breads sometimes I have to cut the ends off to make it fit. I love it. And it's easy to clean & if you open it all the way up, the pans will separate for easier cleaning (discovered that one by accident, it goes back together easily too)
i literally have no intention of buying any of these products but i am addicted to watching your videos, i always appreciate some original content, and your work is always professional and thorough.
Your grilled cheese sandwich cooked that way because of the odd way you put the cheese onto the sandwich before cooking. Some of the cheese was hangin' off the sides & that is why your sandwich turned out the way it did, all messy like that.
i had something similar growing up, it was used for sandwiches and the handles were extremely long so whenever you went camping you could cook over the fire. it worked just like this
I got one for Christmas and used it for the first time today. Your review seems spot on. It's perfect for a grilled cheese or a small melt. It IS a bit flimsy, but my handle clasp stayed clipped the entire time. As long as you don't try to get ambitious with it, it's a useful little tool to have in the kitchen.
I got one of those for Christmas last year, I use it a lot. Even just today for grilled cheese. A year later and nothing has stuck on yet, a blast of hot water and it’s usually good. I’m happy with it, would recommend. I also like to cook eggs in it sometimes, makes it look funny and also perfect sandwich shape.
I love your review, I wanted to buy one of these and after watching your review I decided not to. Not that the review was negative, but the commercials make it seem so fast and easy, magical. You made it seem real. Just another gadget that I don't really want in my kitchen. It still takes time, I still have to clean it up, and it's small so it doesn't work for more than 1-2 servings of most things. Thank you for saving me $20!
I think it's great for making grilled cheese sandwiches, but I don't think it's as versatile as the advertising indicates. I do use it for that single purpose a few times a month, but I'm not sure I would have dropped $20 for it for just that reason.
"" my grandma had one of these things made out of cast iron, def durable but heavy!my grandma had on""" just made a post saying the exact same thing!!!!!, them tosti irons are really good!.. the old once that is.
Tip: keep a thick damp dish cloth handy, and wipe the outside if it drips. That way you don't cook the grease onto the outside of the pan. But be careful: you don't want a thin cloth, because the damp will transfer the heat very quickly otherwise and burn you.
No fair, you didn't tell us about the humorous distraction😂Great review, it's definitely too small for a family. Since it's lightweight and easy to clean it would be perfect for teens, and elderly. Especially if they're cooking for 1 or 2 people. Thanks for sharing😃
Only just found your videos. Can't stop watching them now. Great reviews, and testing. Sadly, every time I watch one of your vids I really have the urge to cook... even though I've eaten.
Never tried or thought about draining grease into a "plastic" trash bag....just a quick thought after reading your idea....won't the grease melt a hole in the plastic???
I'm not expecting a whole lot since I really didn't spend a lot of money on it. I got the square pan and the surface didn't last super long but I think I got my money's worth. Thank you for the review. I learned about the burger grease without learning it myself. God bless you all.
the trick to cleaning is to wipe quickly while it's still hot. i have a power airfryer with the same coating. it didn't stay nonstick long. also, dishwasher will kill the nonstick in one wash.
the power airfryer was nonstick until i cooked a whole chicken in it. it was never the same. then the copper coating started peeling off. i used it a lot. traded up for the 8 qt power airfryer oven.
The square orGreenic griddle works great for toasted cheese. l make 4 at a time. Even though I have to flip them by hand they're done in 6-8 minutes for 4.
My parents called this a pudgie-pie maker. Used for camping to make fruit pies, sandwiches, and some other things that depend on how creative you are. You find one cheaper in the camping isle at your local store-thingy.
I like that you could leave it closed and drain the grease out of the hamburger, perfect!!!!!Just like you did it drain it over the sink and some kind a container!!! I love this product!!!👏
I think the other issue with cooking a burger in it is that you kept the temperature low, to look after the non-stick. A burger would certainly normally be cooked at a much higher heat.
Boston Gary I’ve always been a “Single-Flipper”, just like my grandpa taught me. It’s been a point of contention with Multi-Flippers- usually the ones who consider themselves a “chef”.
Well you need to make sure hamburgers fried thoroughly due to bacteria that is present. If not can make you sick in many cases a E Coli disease that cause kidney failure
I had the green pan and loved it. I just had a roommate that kept using metal on it so it had to go in the trash. My husband made grilled cheese with no bread and it would slide off like a dream.
When you make a grilled cheese have the cheese slices placed squarely in the middle of the slice of bread. It prevents spillage and makes it melt cleaner in the sandwich when cut in-half.
I glad it worked out, with every small it can live with problems, BC l watched your video kind of late. I already had one arrive in the mail at my house, But watched your video and now I know what to look out for and how to handle it better outside of their instructions. Thank you for making this video it was very helpful for me and I'm sure that it will be helpful for others.
Great move on over the sink. Also good to drain the grease when cooking burgers like you did. I feel it's best use is hotdogs and grill cheese. Might pick one up for just that. Btw love your videos it helps me on my choice of as seen on TV buys. You are not bias and give good reviews and your voice tone and so on is perfect for reviews. Love your dog when shes in the reviews.

I love the review, because it brought up the fact it is a flimsy product that will leak when you try to flip it. After watching your review, I have decided that just flipping food in the skillet is more efficient than this kind of product. Great review, not a great product

I have this. It comes apart to make cleaning easier and have 2 pans. I tried the hamburger patty and same thing happened. I've had it for a handful of years and it's still "non-stick".
Seems an acceptable alternative to an electric grilled-cheese-sandwich maker. Easier to clean certainly. Seemed to do an acceptable job on the wieners too. It isn't suitable for burgers though. Like many infomercial products, versatility seems grossly exaggerated. The idea is good, but I couldn't help think it would be infinitely better and more versatile made out of cast iron. Like an old fashioned waffle iron. Obviously it would then cost a huge amount more, but well seasoned, would likely perform better and last longer. Found your channel tonight and after watching a few reviews decided to sub. You're an incredibly likeable guy and your videos are fair and really well presented.
Thanks James! You hit it on the head about a lack of versatility. To me, this is a grilled cheese maker. Not a bad one, though. In fact I used it just this morning.

And I highly doubt it's "real" copper anyway. Copper prices are astronomical and to make anything like this for $20, clearly isn't using actual copper.
My parents have a camping hot fog maker ! It is amazing you butter the outside of 2 pieces of bread and put wieners between the bread and it folds like this and great for camping!
Good demo and good idea to hold over the sink when flippin'. Now, I'm looking for something similar with no ridges, does TV red copper make a smooth surface flipwich Duo?
With the hamburgers you should wipe the exterior with a paper towel before putting it back on the stove. It would prevent flame up and keep the exterior from getting stained. Thank you for the thorough review, although this is too small for families it is great for single people or a couple.
Like the s'mores fries best. Other things seem too one-at-a-time - I can already feel the finger taps wanting theirs NOW, galdangit!Hey! - that brief *guitar riff* scene after opening the bag is way cool! James, thanks for another fine review and going through each possibility.
We bought one and used it (great) but the old way we cook burgers in a pinch is to tear aluminum big enough to make a try large enough two hamburgers and folding up the sides so that the grease doesn't run out in the oven. Twenty minutes at 350/400 and all the cleanup is throwing away the foil.
From a Service Plumbers point of view I cringed when you dripped meat grease into your sink. Please lay a few paper towels over your drain to protect your plumbing if anything. I use paper towels like I have stock in scott paper to wipe grease out of cookware before it ever gets to the sink. Cool review I would buy one just for grilled cheese because I put TOMATOES and pickles on mine and they're a bitch to flip with falling apart. Didn't the original red copper fry pan commercial show a peppermint still in the wrapper being melted and burnt and it wiped right out with a paper towel.
Hey Greg, I should have known better about the grease down the drain! I guess I got caught up in the moment, hah. Oh I remember the peppermint demonstration. That was for the Copper Chef Square Pan. It's hard to tell Red Copper, Copper Chef, and Gotham Steel ads apart nowadays!
Freakin' Reviews I GUESS WE CAN LET YOU SLIDE THIS TIME. PEOPLE THAT DUMP BACON GREASE DOWN THEIR DRAIN GET AN ADDITIONAL SURCHARGE FOR THE GAG FACTOR WHEN I HAVE TO CLEAN MY CABLE ON MY DRAIN SNAKE. I CAN STAND IN A SEWER DITCH WITH TURDS AND SANITARY RAGS AND OTHER NASTY THINGS UP TO MY KNEES AND NOT GAG BUT PULLING BACK A BALL OF GREASE WITH STINKY FOOD PARTICLES STUCK TO IT GETS ME EVERY TIME. ANYMORE I TELL THEM TO CALL ROTO ROOTER BECAUSE I GAG ALL THE WAY OUT TO THE TRUCK ON KITCHEN WASTE CLEANOUT CALLS.
A plumber used to rent a room from me, and he used to tell me horror stories like that. If he sees this video, he'll surely remind me not to put grease down the drain again! Always good to hear from you.
In early 1950's in poland and many other soviet influenced countries we had this waffles cooking machine wich was basicly that only electric. I have one that still works from my grandma.
i allow the grease to cook while still in the pan, once cooled i pour it into a plastic container and let it freeze in the freezer then throw the frozen block away
In india you can buy that kind of flip pan for 2$ or less and they are pretty durable as well. They are not nonstick but you can make them one just by just applying some butter on each side while cooking and they work just fine. Also you don't have to baby them and you can use them on gas or throw them on wood fire.
I just purchased one of these and I am super curious to see how it performs to my old cast iron pie iron. Way longer handle and they old the heat way way better. I only paid $4.99 for it so no big loss if it doesn't work. I think the preheating is not a bad idea because it is thin aluminum construction. While I haven't cooked on this yet I would say/recommend that you keep the cooking times to less than three minutes. Anything more I think the item being cooked will burn. I will provide an update once I use this $5 item. Being single I see lots of uses.
I know a good use for the flipwich would be for camping, you could take it with you and submerge it in the fire and take it out and you have a burger or some grilled cheese or smores
It works ok. As far as non-stick, my cast iron stuff will do that if I use oil on it just before I cook a grilled cheese that has butter on the outside of it. **Nevermind the Jack-Flip... I would put my pancake batter right in the Flip-Wich. (You're just making square pancakes, that's all).!! 🤔
You don't taste the mayo and I assume you meant hummus in general because i dont know how well it would do on the outside of grilled cheese ? That maybe an interesting combo, or it could just burn..
Great review. Now with so many copper cookware on the market my concern is "is it safe to cook with copper" and is it really copper? What do you think? Thank you
Growing up as a kid we would go camping and had what I believe were called pie irons that this product is similar to. Similar but no where near as good. Cast iron plates to cook the sandwich or camp pies long sturdy handles leak proof and the locking clip could slide along the handles. Personally I kept the clip by the press part. You may wanna find something like that and compare the too. The pie iron can be used on a gas stove or I guess electric. Didn’t grow up with electric so not sure on that one but it would be nice to see how well a copper pan will do against a cast iron one
They are dishwasher safe, but I only wash by hand. I think very high heat can degrade the surface. The ads also say they won't scratch, but they definitely do scratch!
You need to cut Hotdogs when grilling for best flavor. Wieners or Franks they are made with mechanically separated poultry (from butchered bones) so although they are pre-cooked they must be cooked. Hotdogs are made from Beef or Pork and Beef they are pre-cooked they can be eaten cold as they are basically mini bologna .
I love mine. Flimsy, yes. You have to pay attention. I would never cook anything greasy in it tho. Awfully messy. I didn't get a cook book but I have only used it for sandwiches.
I think it's pretty cool....and nope I don't think I'll grill hamburger patties on there. My dilemma is how do you put it back together when it came apart to wash? I spent too much time trying and if I don't find a way, I will have to return it. Thanks.
I have a similar device with a longer handle that we used over an open fire at our camp. It is cast aluminum. Still have it 55 years later and it still works great.
I thought aluminum cookware from that era had the problem that the aluminum leeches into the food and it's super bad for you?
55 years bruh

If you keep emptying that thing over your sink, your going to clog your drains and have a big plumbing bill.
Got it. Well if that happens, there seem to be plenty in the comments here I can hire! :-)
Get an empty coffee can to drain grease into. When it gets almost full just put the lid on it and throw it away.

It did look pretty flimsy. One way to solve the grease issue, you should only need to flip a burger once.
You are right about that. It took me a couple of uses to get the hang of cooking a hamburger in this device.
I think the other issue with cooking a burger in it is that you kept the temperature low, to look after the non-stick. A burger would certainly normally be cooked at a much higher heat.

Great video tutorial for the basics; appreciate it very much !
Good review, how is it holding on? have you had a chance to try it out more?
You have to try grilled cheese using mayo instead of butter!! It's way better and mayo is basically oil and eggs.
Glad you liked it. At least if you run out of butter you know you have a backup alternative -=)
Not a big mayo fan, but I may try that. You know what I sometimes use in place of mayo? Hummus.
You don't taste the mayo and I assume you meant hummus in general because i dont know how well it would do on the outside of grilled cheese ? That maybe an interesting combo, or it could just burn..
Oh yeah, I meant in general, and not on the outside of a grilled cheese! I may have to try it to see if it burns.
mixwell1983 Uh what if someone is allergic to eggs?
Good review. Unlike the WNRP TV review where they misused it and trashed the product.
What I learnt from Alton Brown is to heat up 2 cast iron skillets and use the as a press. Works great.
I own one of these and it works great
I was just at world of beer in Galleria mall last week I got the kahuna beer from Hawaii lol love that spot
FYI, when cooking a burger that way way you are technically frying the burger and the grease is what helps cook the burger faster.
Just tried to use the flipwich on my induction stove. wouldn't make contact. I'm guessing either my burners are too small or too large.
You need more audience man. Your videos are great!
Will do,,, I also got a Red Copper Chef Knife with order, see how good that is as well, later.
Does the red copper flipwith work good on regular stove top?
It's a pudgy pit pie maker but for a stove I love it lol
Are all these copper pans dishwasher safe or do you recommend hand wash only?
They are dishwasher safe, but I only wash by hand. I think very high heat can degrade the surface. The ads also say they won't scratch, but they definitely do scratch!
Freakin' Reviews mm
I have ruined my red copper deep pan by putting it in the dishwasher and using metal utensils, it says you can but you can't.
You think you are slick but we all still know you tried to build you own iron man suit to beat tony stark in the first iron man movie.
Red copper deals.com where do I go buy them
HAHAHA OMHG
I love mine. Flimsy, yes. You have to pay attention. I would never cook anything greasy in it tho. Awfully messy. I didn't get a cook book but I have only used it for sandwiches.
i have a firetop panini maker that was made for an open fire from about the 20s that is really similar
I think it's pretty cool....and nope I don't think I'll grill hamburger patties on there. My dilemma is how do you put it back together when it came apart to wash? I spent too much time trying and if I don't find a way, I will have to return it. Thanks.
This guy turns into 'The Human Torch' everytime he checks his stovetop, FLAME ON...
playing it like a guitar was hilarious
I bought new one off Ebay for $20.00. Plan on using it for grilled cheese sandwiches.
I brought this for making bread pies when camping so I could use stovetop instead of wood fire outside
does this work with electric stoves? I live in an area that doesn't have gas lines and so for the 35 years I have lived here, we all have electric.
