Sophie, the reasons why police officers leave their key in the ignition and the car running...
    1. If they're in a chase like these, stop and have to continue the chase, they'd be wasting time restarting the car.
    2. If a call comes from dispatch that says there's an emergency across town, at least one officer can jump in quicker than the rest and take off from the current scene.
    3. The police cars have computers and other electronics that might have to power up when the car starts, which is also a waste of time, when they can just get in while the car is running without anything powering up, (not like it takes forever, but still, a few seconds are wasted) waiting for the air, heat or defroster to work, etc.
The mistake comes into play is when they don't lock the door. They, or at least those I know, can lock and unlock the doors with the remote key fob on their utility belt.
I have two brothers, two cousins and three friends who are either officers, sergeants or detectives (one is a female detective), so I've been able to ask a few questions that puzzled me. A lot of women I know don't give any of it a second thought, but when I was a little girl, my little brother and I wanted to be a brother and sister police team. 🙂
Just looking at videos of training changed my mind. 😄
I love the sound of the police car and SUV engine revving and cooling itself.
I've always grown up knowing there were family and friends on the force and in the military, but I just couldn't handle being part of either. It takes a strong and patient person for either, and I'm pretty impatient.
It's always a bit funny when one or two are parked at my house and I'm standing in the yard talking to them, and strangers don't know what to think. People who know us just speak, wave, crack a joke and keep it moving. 😀

We had a stolen car with kids inside in my town a little while ago. The thief stopped long enough to leave the kids at a nearby nursing home before taking off again with the car. Small point in his favor I guess that he made sure the kids were somewhere safe instead of just dumping them alongside the road or worse.

He certainly cares more about kids than cops do. A friend of mine was killed because the cops thought it was a great idea to charge after someone in and out of neighborhoods. She was on her way to get her 4 young kids and now they don't have a mother. Garbage cops didn't even care.

Of course the keys are in the car. While on duty the cop has to leave the car running so they can respond faster if a call comes through. They have two keys though, and normally lock the doors with the car running. However it looked like the window was open so locking the door didn't work well.
Some time in the 70's or 80's two kids led a deputy in my county on chase, the deputy got caught by a train at a grade crossing and the teens he was chasing stopped on the other side and waited for the train to go through to keep up the chase.
About 10 years ago while two officers and a deputy were having a break at the gas station a local guy stole the deputy's patrol car. They caught him a few miles out of the village and he learned the hard lesson that when you steal a patrol car you get more than just a charge of Grand Theft Auto, you also get felony weapons charges because you also stole the AR-15 in the vehicle. The guy got two weapons charges because the car he stole also had a shotgun in it as well.

It happened here in Columbus Ohio. A door dash worker had her two kids in the car while picking up food for someone.
It was during the winter time so she left the car running to have the heat on.
A man jumped in the car and drove off.
One kid ( the oldest I think ) was dropped off at an intersection not too far away. The other was found unharmed a while later.

I watch a lot of police bodycam videos & it's disturbingly common for a cop to get on the radio after a foot chase & request that someone secure their car because they left it unlocked, parked & running, or with the keys still in it. At least take that extra second & always take the keys with you before you pursue someone!

I wish people could see the chases that didn't end so well so they weren't encouraged to try it. There was one guy, fled on a motorcycle at speeds of between 120 and 130mph. Came to a sudden stop when a car pulled out from a cross street. The lower half of his body, and the motorcycle, ended up stuck halfway into side of the car engine while pieces of the upper body and head were streaked with blood across the length of half a city block. That was hard to look at.

    • @dudermcdudeface3674

Nobody sane is "encouraged to try it" by these videos of idiots. There's no need for exposure to carnage to know this is the wrong strategy for staying alive and free.

    • @place_there9104
      @place_there9104 Рік тому

@@dudermcdudeface3674 After having taught kids for many years, I can assure you that many of them view these kind of videos as fun and exciting rather than as a warning that sane people would take a lesson from. That's how they're presented by these programs to make the ratings. Teenage boys especially are prone to not think things through about consequences before acting. Many of the fights and even gunfights were escalations of very minor things. One fatal stabbing was because, "He looked at me funny." Things like that make you realize just how little connection a lot of kids have with sanity to begin with.
