This is a good movie thank you for uploading🙏🏻. Fortunately for Britain, King Edward abdicated the throne. He was a spoiled, selfish person who indulged in pleasures and luxurious vacations and did not want to bear the responsibilities that came with the throne. Not to mention his sympathy for Hitler. Berties was up to the job and was a great king.
You know, I do agree with you, but I can’t get it out of my mind that it could have been that he was a weak person who had to have her in his life, and I do believe he would have committed suicide had she not married him. Arguably it is the most beautiful love story of all time.
All the views that this has unearthed its fasinating.....i for what it is worth think she did us a great favour !!!!!im glad we have our queen !!!oh and i think the acting in this film is second to none !!!
@@iwantthe80sback59. If you mean she never gave Edward a child, then yes, it would have fallen to her….much like Victoria. King George III never had children. And that should have eventually occurred to Edward, and everyone else.
King George VI was an admirable king, dignified, respected, capable and much beloved. He had immense encouragement and support from his devoted wife as he accepted and fulfilled a role he never wanted. Edward would have been a charismatic, popular king but we'll never really know how successful his reign would have been had he not abdicated. It's so ironic that in less than 70 years' time Edward would have been able to be king *and* marry the love of his life...just like his nephew.
I wanted to share what I learned about Archbishop Lang, the leader of the anti-Wallis faction: in 1938, while most people were busy looking the other way, he saved 60 rabbis from the Nazis, obtaining their passage to England. I find it sad that he is mostly remembered (and often derided) for his role in the Abdication rather than his role as a hero.
I'm picturing Wallis consoling herself every so often, by climbing the stairs, locking all the doors, lighting some candles and opening all of my jewelry trunks for an hour or so. Just to look and remember that this was the trade you made for the rest of your journey through life.
In fairness she never loved or wanted to marry him. She had a fling with him that she thought would be temporary. But once he got besotted and obsessed he would never let her go. She told him not to abdicate. He refused to listen to her and once he did abdicate he threatened to end his own life if she didn’t marry him so she did out of fear and guilt.
@@juismac Fear and remorse, but not guilt. Wallis was of a time and place where the only acceptable life was marriage. The scandal of her affair with David gave her such notoriety that no other man of substance would have her. She was stuck with David because she saw no other acceptable alternative. She had enough wealth that she could have lived modestly as a single, the wealth but not the courage. His suicide threats persuaded her only because that would have increased the outcry against her.
What I learned about Wallis Simpson she had another lover that she truly loved but because she was with King Edward which she cared for too - she had mixed feelings about leaving him especially when he abdicated, his throne for her. What was in those letters she wrote to the other love was sad because she wanted that man but stayed with Edward due to his love for her. Despite all, she loss a lot for playing sides end of the candle.
My Heart broke for Bertie as he listened to the Abdication speech. he had hoped for many years as a Country Man with his Family enjoying Sandringham and Balmoral. Edward put paid to that and thrust him onto the throne far sooner than he wanted and thereby our recently Departed Queen soon after that.
He was the bets most competent among them. I m sorry he found ut uncimefortabek uet he save dthe world by keeping England's chin up and never surrendering the empire under that bombardment. He was a great king . Elizbathed was always destined ot the throne however. He wa sterilized by his rheumatic fever as a child. That's why his pulberty was so very delayed. He was also a traitor and nzi sympathizer. His onw givernemnt did not trust him wuth state secrets. That's says alot. He needed to get out of the way. For everyone .
Letters that have come to light show she still loved Ernest and wanted him back, even after she married him. They were miserable for the rest of their lives, like two birds ina cage
I dont think they were MISERABLE but it wasn't a brilliantly happy marriage. However I think that of the 2 of them Edward was the more unhappy.. Bereft of his royal role he did not know what to do with himself and Wallis wasn't a parituclarly affectionate woman...
From what I've read about her, she was as hard and manipulative as she looked- which was not a bit like Joely Richardson. She knew exactly what she was doing- and apparently tired of edward very quickly. I knew one minor Royal "hanger-on" who used to be a fountain of Royal gossip. Allegedly!
I still think it's ironic that the Church of England was founded because Henry VIII wanted a divorce from his first wife (and found various ways to get rid of other wives), yet the church had serious issues with divorce. Some call Henry's divorce an annulment, but his daughter Mary, and later Elizabeth (even after her father "annulled" his marriage to Anne Boleyn) were readily accepted as his legitimate children and heirs by most of the English. So why again does the Church of England look down on divorced members remarrying?
This is a very flattering and charming portrayal of Wallis, both in beauty and personality. The childishness and selfishness of Edward is well depicted, however. They all behaved like spoilt teenagers, most inappropriate for middle aged people with serious responsibilities.
When Queen Mary says, "Look at her, she's covered in jewels!" I can't help but laugh at the hypocrisy😂 For goodness sake, Queen Mary has a huge, immaculate crown on her head and is wearing that super thick "iced out" choker. Talk about covered in jewels!
The most horrible thing in the end, was that the lawyer took everything away from Wallis. She took wallis;s hairdresser, her cook her staff, her friends were not allowed to visit. That was pure evil.
There are some reports that while Wallis liked being Edward's mistress, she assumed that he'd dump her for someone else after a few months, as was the custom. So you can imagine her surprise when it turns out that he becomes obsessed with her and will not give her up.
Maria Kelly Edward tended to get very attached to his mistresses and conducted long term affairs with them. Wallis liked the social status he gave her. She definitely expected it to end but he became obsessed with her. I’ve researched their relationship a lot over the years and I do think she loved him. He definitely loved her more though. She was overwhelmed by his intense devotion and struggled with it over the years.
@@Lauranna She probably expected that he'd end teh affair when he became King as he might be expected to make a suitable marriage then.. but he did remain close to some of his mistresses in a very clinging way, even after the affair was over.. So she would have had a status as a special friend of the King. I think she wasn't all that fond of him when they married and found him tiring and obsessive and overly clinging...
@Glen that's exactly what it looks like to me. Her first marriage wasn't happy, her second husband used her for his own gratification and business, and cheated on her with her close friend, and her third husband used her for escaping the people around him telling how to live his life !!!! No one of them ever thought about her own needs and dreams and desires. To have a husband in Paris without ever giving birth to a child sounds like a nightmare to me !!!!
I don't think Wallis realized what she got herself into until lit was far too late. Then she was faced with the ultimate horror for a sophisticated woman which was to be saddled with a man-child for the rest of her days who barely gave her space to breathe. Ironically, the only people happy about her was the government who were desperate to get rid of him, a perennial adolescent who was incapable of realizing the role of a constitutional monarch not to mention his inability to see through all of the Nazi propaganda. They knew thst if he was not gotten rid of the monarchy would not survive and I also think that if an excuse couldn't be found a bullet could. The crown always finds the right head to land on especially if the right hands are available to lend a hand. Edward may have been immature with poor judgment, but he was not stupid, and I think even he realized that if he didn't go quietly, he might not survive.
Wallis sophisticated? I think its important not to mistake brash vulgarity for cultural refinement. She did have a quicker mind than her duke. She had a reputation for some wit and became a fashion icon during her years in the USA.
They were both Nazi sympathisers and he did give things away . They very much remind me of the Sussexes in many ways though Edward on Wallis didn’t speak out against the RF. They only thing that Edward got angry about is that Wallis wasn’t given HRH status.
The more they are against them, the more Edward wants her. It’s just like when your parents tell you they don’t want you dating someone you start dating them. Their whole relationship was mishandled.
I read an article about Wallis once and she made the comment about how she could never leave him after all he gave up for her. I thought that was so sad. She was caught in a trap for the rest of her life. He was a laughing stock in England and his country men were grateful he didn’t become king as that would have been a disaster. He wasn’t welcome anywhere and all he could ever do is play cards, have cocktail parties, travel just to travel and hunt. He had no purpose and she just had to follow along. She was hated and he was useless. Such a sad waste for both.
well. she was not a victim, she was married and she found it amusing and flatering to flirt with someone she knew would be the future King... and she wasn´t a litle girl I mean...she had what she deseved.
*Yes...this is a romanticized version of their life. She still loved her EX Ernest* *She considered David a Bore who talked continually about his life as a* *King.*
But a very romanticized version of the truth unfortunately it wasntvlikd this he needed a boss and was desperate not to be king. She wanted to be the kings mistress with trappings and Ernest and got trapped. To be fair she stuck it out though treated him abominally in latter years..they also did merch werexalwaus looking for more money and her title up until death. Its ironic both buried in Frogmore near the cottage where Harry and Meg have resided.
Yes, indeed. "Your Majesty" and "Your Royal Highness". and Ernest referring to their impending visit to Balmoral to stay with "the King", which he was not.

I really admire this woman. She was not ugly, but was no beauty queen....but for she had a very strong personality and for sure other qualifications....A king of England could have any woman he wanted, instead he prefered her and plus: to marry her he had to give up beeing the king ! I wish I were just a litlle like her!
The actress who plays Mary of Teck is amazing. At 50:35 during the conversation with Bertie, she is flawless. The script is amazing, her accent is lovely, and the microexpressions of shock and disgust at David's request to meet Wallis are PERFECT. That "wot?" gets me every time. The line, "When I think of the hundreds of thousands who lay down their life for this country, and he cannot bring himself to make one *small* sacrifice?" is perfection. Really puts Edward VIII's self centeredness into perspective.
She had a heavy German accent. I would love it if just one portrayal of Queen Mary included her accent. Alas, I’ve yet to hear it. And this is no exception.
@@amytrottier8836 Princess Mary of Teck, afterwards Queen Mary, lived her whole life in England and spoke only with an English accent. We know because she made recorded speeches to the Empire. If he had ruled as KING and died in 1972... Our Queen would have come to the throne aged 45.. As Edward @Wallis never had children.... .. So the story would have had the same ending..... we would just have had to wait a little longer....
@@Chuck0856 of course.... but I'm just saying if Edward had reigned UNTILL his death which was in 1972... George probably would have already died in 1952 as he was ill with lung cancer so history in that respect would have lead Elizabeth to the throne any way only later as I stated...
Most theorists believe that George’s life span was severely shortened because of the strain of the war years. Whenever I would start spouting a strain of “ifs” to my beloved late husband, he would just cut me off with “… and if grandma had had balls she’d have been grandpa.” Thank God I was married to him and not Edward!!!

In one letter (of many) that Wallis wrote to her ex-husband, she referred to Edward as 'Peter Pan'. The perpetual child. Possibly, what Wallis entered into, to be but, as she desired, a brief affair, backfired on her.

I think she and Edward called The Queen (Mother) the Scottish Cook, Bertie I think was the Stuttering Idiot and Elizabeth, (the II) was Shirley Temple. All, I think, Wallis' sharp wit. One of the things the DoW adored about her. The end of this telemovie was very delicate about her descent into dementia. I think they said something about being a recluse for the rest of her life? If there was karma, she really got both barrels. Years as a living vegetable, whilst precious items disappeared and nurses rolled her to clean her backside... and the French solicitor kept her alive while she bled the estate, smuggled out stuff and sued ANYONE who tried to alert the world what was going on, or who wrote anything to criticise Wallis. Not a love story for anyone romantic.

I find it hard to understand that if you really really want out of a relationship then you'd leave nobody can make you be with them. I do believe that once he abdicated she felt that after all he'd given up them she absolutely had to stay with him. Be careful what you wish for . In the long run I think England was better off for him abdicating he was just dull as dishwater and as equally dim.

I will never understand why the woman always gets blamed in affairs even when we know it takes two to tangles. The scary part is women who are the one pointing the finger. SAD
It's a shame this younger generation doesn't know the meaning of duty. He was to be king of a country. He was supposed to think of his people not himself. The best decision he made was to abdicate.
Oh come on. 'Duty', 'thinking of his people', you really think that's what the Monarchy is about? The Monarchy exists (I am only talking of the Windsors because I don't know about the finances of the others), because they are 'out and about' opening sweetie factories and the like, all to keep themselves in the public eye because a growing number of people don't give a toss about them, even detest them. If they didn't show themselves people would forget they existed. They are filthy rich and yet they live off the backs of the ordinary people. The monarchy is way past its sell-by date. The whole system including an unelected House of Lords is antiquated.
If there is blame then it is shared. Adultery became an accepted norm. Many marriages were a business deal for title, property, status, wealth, etc. That system has built in flaws. Edward was indulged and that does not build character. They lived out the remainder of their lives in useless self-indulgence.
When Wallis was wanting to escape and discussed where she could go, she mentioned China or South America but I don’t think she said Africa. She should have gone to Kenya and become part of the Happy Valley set. She would have fit right in! If you’re not familiar with it, read about it in Wikipedia. The lives and lifestyles of these people are like well written soap operas, each one more fantastical than the last. Seriously!

Although beautifully directed, I think Stephen Campbell Moore portrays The Prince of Wales as much more intelligent and thoughtful than he actually was, judging by the testimony of his equerries. Edward never really grew up, and Wallis Simpson took the place of a strict nanny. I doubt either one was capable of an honest, adult relationship, and certainly Edward thought he could get away with whatever he wanted.

It not widely known but the Archbishop of Canterbury was against Edward being King at all. He considered him to be too progressive and not moral enough to reign as King. Actually there were much machinations behind the scene as shown in this film
It also became apparent that Edward was very much on the side of Hitler - something that the government wasn't.. There was quite a lot of his being tangled up with the Nazis to an unforgivable degree..

Sounds much like whats going on today with Harry and Megan. Harry does seem to be obsessed with Megan and is destroying his life for her just like a child.
At the time of the abdication the Duke of York soon to be King was with the goverment, the future queen had the flu and was in bed, the two princesses were playing and heard people outside their house cheering. The Princess Elizabeth went to a footman and asked why the people were cheering and he told her her father had just become King. She told her sister who said, "does that mean you will be queen."
Has to be the biggest pledge of love....maybe in history. Giving up being a king of a country ??!! Looking at pics of her, he really saw her through "rose colored glasses". Without Wallis, England would likely not have Elizabeth the 2nd. That would be a loss. A huge loss. Wallis did not want to be married to the king of England, she was very happy being MRS Simpson doing as she pleased. It was the Pathetic Edward that need her strength. Truly not a man up to the task.
To be honest we will never know exactly what really went on. I hope that somehow Edward did find true love and happiness- He gave up his life and birthright for Wallice Simpson.
@Nisha chambiyal oh, he cared all right - but she didn’t. She took up with much younger men right in front of his nose. A member of my family spent time in Paris with the Windsor “set” and he said it was heartbreaking. The Duke would beg Wallis to “be kind” to him, running after her as she left the party with the boy toy of the evening. As she got older she became wrinkled and unattractive and the cost of the boy toys went up considerably. Luckily he had plenty of money, because she had none except what he gave her. When he died she was already ill with Alzheimer’s and spent the rest of her life incommunicado, guarded by her (very well-paid) lawyer who would let non of her friends see her. Don’t kid yourself that they had a wonderful romantic love story and lived happily ever after. They were a couple of selfish people who were tethered together for life and made each other miserable.
He fell for her frankness and extroverted personality. Wallis treated him like any man without any pretentiousness and deference. She was different from his British women who pampered his royal behind in every way. History repeating itself with Harry and Meghan but without the threat to the crown. Hooray for love for the sake of love 😍😍😍
No, not quite. When war broke out, they fled France for Spain and then onto Portugal. The royal family at this stage, wanted to silence both of them as they were 'loose cannons'. In the end, they were banished to the Bahamas. letters have been found that implicate both of them to be supporters of the Nazi regime.
I think she didn't depend on him and didn't treat him as superior and that's what makes men fall in love. You can't fall in love with someone looking up to you, as a partner.

Love this portrayal and esp. Vanessa Redgrav’s and English movie Director, TONY RICHARDSON’s adult daughter, Joely Richardson! Her sister unfortunately passed following a skiing accident several years ago . That sister was married to Brit actor LIAM NEISON…
It's interesting to see the story from Wallis and Edward's point of view, but they've left out a lot of unflattering information. Like the fact that Edward not only dumped a former mistress and long-time friend after getting involved with Wallis, he completely cut off the woman's daughter, who he'd been a surrogate father to for many years. Plus things were not over with his current mistress when he met Wallis; in fact, she asked Wallis -- a supposed friend -- to watch over him when she had to go to America on family business. She came back and found Wallis had neatly taken her place.
Around "17" The Prince of Wales is NOT a "Your Majesty", he is a "Your Royal Highness" or Sir. The only Majesty is the Monarch or in the case ofthat being a king, his wife as Queen.
We are seeing a similar scenario play out with Harry and that Markle one right now. Obviously not involving who will be king but in all other respects quite similar but I don't see that couple staying together for life.
I am glad she came around, in a weird twisted sense.... she saved the World! A Fascist traitor King and Queen would have sold out Britain and ended the World as we know it! The Brits then got an amazing family who proudly led their nation into victory and until this day we dignity, honor, and respect.
Such a love looks exceptional from the outside and is suffocating and boring to death on the inside. Love isn't about adoration or making sacrifices, it's about supporting each other in pursuing your respective dreams and giving each other freedom. It's the opposite of what you wish for.
This version emphasizes the friction between the royal institution and the character of the King. The anger he has is as forceful as his longing for Wallis. He used her to express his individuality and she used him to satisfy her need for security. How much love apart from these motivators is a question.
She didn’t love him. She still loved her ex husband and wanted to escape but Edward watched her too closely and in the end she gave in. They were both very shallow and could have had a happier life if they had got involved in charitable work instead of being so selfish.
I do not think mrs simpson was a nice woman. But i have respect that she and the King did not go on with a secret live. Prins Charles married Diana and had Camilla for a mistress. That was despicable. Wallis and Edward did not hurt another woman. Like Camilla and Charles did
100% agree...Charles possibly got his wife killed too. If he becomes the next king, it's time Britain abolishes the monarchy. The queen had better outlive her son & let Prince William ascend the throne.
Not exactly the love affair of the century, at least on her part. Some of her letters were found that shed a new light on her opinions of him and her love for her second husband.

Edward was narcissistic, vain, shallow and not very bright while Wallis was grasping, conniving, greedy and wholly self-absorbed. So they made a perfectly suited couple. This was no romantic tale of how a commoner won the heart of a king.
I find it hypocritical for a culture to scandalize divorce and yet condone adultery. Marriage is a vow of fidelity. Divorce retracts that vow. Adultery simply chooses to ignore it. Divorce is the more honorable alternative.
Hilarious when the Queen talked about someone ELSE being covered in diamonds. With the Windsor’s GERMAN heritage, they have always had nerve being such snobs.
I think Queen Mary was referring to the "vulgarity" of wearing diamonds, emeralds and rubies together: it just wasn't done in certain circles! Queen Mary certainly had her tiara(s), and certainly wore fabulous diamonds, but she would never have made the faux pas of wearing diamonds combined with other gemstones, unless the particular tiara or piece had more than one gemstone included.
@@alanaronald244 Queen Mary was known for having excellent taste in jewelry. I don’t, but I do know that she had that reputation so I’d say your assessment is probably along the right lines of thinking.

The safest moment!!
Bertie also had an excellent wife by his side.
You know, I do agree with you, but I can’t get it out of my mind that it could have been that he was a weak person who had to have her in his life, and I do believe he would have committed suicide had she not married him. Arguably it is the most beautiful love story of all time.

Yes and his abdication is directly responsible for the King's early demise. It's little wonder that Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother despised him.
@@juismac
Fear and remorse, but not guilt.
Splendid production! Perfection to a tee for each of the cast. Many thanks for making it available for viewing.
Such a sad love story built on Adultry, betrayal, greed and poor CHOICES ❌❌❌
The two of them were prolly cocaine addicts. It WAS the roaring 20s.
Bernie was not prepared to be King and Emperor of Great Britian.
Bertie was not ready to be a king.
Yes it's sad they had a close loving little family for the times.
Bertie may not have thought he was ready but in truth he was ready from birth. A good and decent man, in the right place at the right time.
Letters that have come to light show she still loved Ernest and wanted him back, even after she married him. They were miserable for the rest of their lives, like two birds ina cage
I think the only one Wallis Simpson loved was Wallis Simpson and he was probably the same!
I dont think they were MISERABLE but it wasn't a brilliantly happy marriage. However I think that of the 2 of them Edward was the more unhappy.. Bereft of his royal role he did not know what to do with himself and Wallis wasn't a parituclarly affectionate woman...
She no doubt felt trapped into marrying the Duke of Windsor
From what I've read about her, she was as hard and manipulative as she looked- which was not a bit like Joely Richardson. She knew exactly what she was doing- and apparently tired of edward very quickly. I knew one minor Royal "hanger-on" who used to be a fountain of Royal gossip. Allegedly!
Both of them were narcissists. But she was the worst.
It's because they are not willing to allow for women what they are ready to allow for men, to reproduce an heir.
the Church looks down on it because its the destruction of the family, plus plus, however now a Queen Consort divorcee is about to happen
Divorce and remarriage are two different things.
I doubt that was even the reaosn. He was stalking ribbentroops married mistress
Agreed.
This is a very flattering and charming portrayal of Wallis, both in beauty and personality. The childishness and selfishness of Edward is well depicted, however. They all behaved like spoilt teenagers, most inappropriate for middle aged people with serious responsibilities.

@@sarahg3500 ? I dont see what Paris has to do with anything but Wallis didn't want children, Im pretty sure of that
I don't think Wallis realized what she got herself into until lit was far too late.
Totally agree. Baldwin, the church and his mother were determined to oust him. Glad they did.
Absolutely brilliant comment! Thank you for laying it out so perfectly ❤
They were both Nazi sympathisers and he did give things away . They very much remind me of the Sussexes in many ways though Edward on Wallis didn’t speak out against the RF. They only thing that Edward got angry about is that Wallis wasn’t given HRH status.
I believe you nailed it!
The more they are against them, the more Edward wants her. It’s just like when your parents tell you they don’t want you dating someone you start dating them. Their whole relationship was mishandled.

Why did they give Wallis an Actress SO STUNNING & Pretty???
When even Wallis herself said she knew she wasn't attractive
I read an article about Wallis once and she made the comment about how she could never leave him after all he gave up for her. I thought that was so sad. She was caught in a trap for the rest of her life. He was a laughing stock in England and his country men were grateful he didn’t become king as that would have been a disaster. He wasn’t welcome anywhere and all he could ever do is play cards, have cocktail parties, travel just to travel and hunt. He had no purpose and she just had to follow along. She was hated and he was useless. Such a sad waste for both.

I feel sorry for Earnest. He was the scapegoat. Edward and Wallis deserved each other!

The old king should have gone
Into fortune telling. Will ruin
Himself in twelve months.
How spot on he was.
Linda Jewell I totally agree with you he should have done his Duty instead of his being selfish!
Duty? Shaking hands with people and reading a speech at Parliament? come on.
Bertie (George VI) was a far, far better King than his brother would've been.
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!!!!!
We do so love to judge people & situations we have never met ourselves. Imagining we are better people, which by our judgements we prove we are not.
Seriously!
That was Kenya's golden days before they gave it up to independence.

I certainly concur with the fact Joely Richardson portrayed Wallis Simpson superbly. I also find it interesting as much as Wallis was maligned, the current public embarrassment of Harry & Megan to the Royal Family is far worse than the situation of Wallis.
She never loved him - he loved her - there's is always 1 who loves more !!! Very few love equally !

Probably one of the few royals that married for love and not who they were supposed to!!!
It not widely known but the Archbishop of Canterbury was against Edward being King at all. He considered him to be too progressive and not moral enough to reign as King. Actually there were much machinations behind the scene as shown in this film
😅

And Elizabeth said, "You better believe it, sister! I will be queen! And no, you can't marry that divorced man!"
And what a magnificent queen she was!!! ❤️🇺🇸🇬🇧
Has to be the biggest pledge of love....maybe in history. Giving up being a king of a country ??!! Looking at pics of her, he really saw her through "rose colored glasses". This story gives new meaning to "love us blind". This production was masterfully done. Interesting to hear more details of their lives together.
Yes, very well acted but historically inaccurate.
I don't think Walter Simpson was that bad looking..
Some people are very attractive and don't photograph so good.

How pathetic. A man that was frightened of being king using Wallis as his alibi. Weakness beyond measure.

She was still third in line. It was destined.
But Wallis and Edward had no children so Elizabeth would have inherited the crown anyway only in 1972 at Edward's death.
@@susienorris1300 Assuming he survived that long.
Wallis was past childbearing age. If he’d been allowed to marry her and stay on the throne Elizabeth would still have become Queen - just later.
Old “Mrs. Mansion Mingot” from the Scorsese “Remains of the Day”… that’s a delightful sight.
To be honest we will never know exactly what really went on. I hope that somehow Edward did find true love and happiness- He gave up his life and birthright for Wallice Simpson.
She made the rest of his life a misery. She despised him. She took lovers right under his nose and wouldn't even talk to him in the end.
Did not find true love and neither happiness...He was just a puppet in the hands of a harpy!!!
@Nisha chambiyal People often talk of what he gave up. He gave up responsibilities he did not want. She gave up her freedom.
Yes. And I don’t recall King Edward VIII ever expressing his wish to be anybody’s tampon.

So sad. 😢
Oh yes, she watched over him alright... All over him, indeed!
I believe in the 1988 tv drama THE WOMAN HE LOVED it is mentioned.
Don't hate the playa, hate the game!
Around "17" The Prince of Wales is NOT a "Your Majesty", he is a "Your Royal Highness" or Sir. The only Majesty is the Monarch or in the case ofthat being a king, his wife as Queen.
It tuned out to be a good thing that Wallis came along. Edward would have made a very bad king. Those two were made for each other.
PCplays99 Yes,it turns out we owe her a debt of gratitude.

i wonder if in a way Mrs Simpson was Edward's way of scuttling the throne and all that went along with it? hmm...
1536~Henry Viii & Anne Boleyn. 1936~Edward & Wallis. Interesting?
We are seeing a similar scenario play out with Harry and that Markle one right now. Obviously not involving who will be king but in all other respects quite similar but I don't see that couple staying together for life.
I am glad she came around, in a weird twisted sense.... she saved the World! A Fascist traitor King and Queen would have sold out Britain and ended the World as we know it! The Brits then got an amazing family who proudly led their nation into victory and until this day we dignity, honor, and respect.
Very true

And Wallis was with David, Bertie’s brother.
Creepy R, oh sorry Cecy R, be careful what you wish for. A stalker a man obsessed ? would make you not want to be born.
I’ve had second graders more mature than these people!
Emotional blackmail is not love.

Diana was having MULTIPLE affairs and hurt the wives of at least THREE married men. That was despicable! She tried to go on with a secret life.
Not exactly the love affair of the century, at least on her part. Some of her letters were found that shed a new light on her opinions of him and her love for her second husband.

I find it hypocritical for a culture to scandalize divorce and yet condone adultery. Marriage is a vow of fidelity. Divorce retracts that vow. Adultery simply chooses to ignore it. Divorce is the more honorable alternative.
That’s too simple. Marriage is a bond, adultery isn’t. It is sex.
Hilarious when the Queen talked about someone ELSE being covered in diamonds. With the Windsor’s GERMAN heritage, they have always had nerve being such snobs.
I doubt that it was their first choice to leave their beautiful country for an island where it rains almost anytime.
Nothing wrong with German heritage, and Queen Mary had been raised in England.
