  • When setting out to create a video on scouring (wash) raw sheep fleece, I found I had so much to say about Lanolin that I should make a video just about Lanolin.
This was to include both extracting and refining.
Although I had experience of extracting raw/crude lanolin, I hadn't tried refining lanolin.
initially I planned on sharing resources on refining that I had discovered.
but as there are also resourses on extracting that I have found to be disappointing in practice and advise against following.
I couldn't risk sharing a resource on refining that wasn't tried and tested!
in order to get a promised video published, I split it into part 1 and part 2
    part one is published
    • Lanolin - How to extra...
and I am working on part two. to ensure that i create a simple and repeatable resourse for refining Lanolin.
I have developed an indepth knowledge of Lanolin in the process and have several innovative ideas of my own!
    please subscrib
e for lots of resources on Wool processing. wet felting and some videos of our 4 pet sheep.

IMHO the refined lanolin is a waxy substance composed of many different diterpene, 3-ring aromatic molecules that are denser than the olive oil ( 1.05 g/ml vs 0.95 g/ml ) but their large surface area to weight ratio ( cos they're small) means they are suspended by surface tension for a while. The waxy substance is more dense than water so once part of it penetrates the oil layer gravity defeats the surface tension that water at density 1g/ ml affords. So surface tension defeats gravity for a few seconds. Then it falls quickly through the water because of its' higher density and lower surface interactions ( van der Waals attraction) with water.

Thank you for explaining the science of it! Appreciated!
