    The SSL-5, or a modded version of it, is in his Fender custom shop Strats (which I wish would go down in price… I can’t find one for under $8k). He had a similar version in his Black Strat before he auctioned it off. So, being the “Black Cat” Strat is one of the custom shop versions, he’s currently using the same pickup on tour. I can say this- putting any vintage inspired Alnico V magnet pickups in your guitar, even lower end ones, will absolutely get you closer to his tones, especially if you’re like me (on a tight budget) and you’ve been playing a guitar with ceramic pickups (most Squiers have them, though the newer Classic Vibe guitars might have Alnico pickups in them). When I swapped them out, the difference was amazing.

    • @sleepbelts
      @sleepbelts Місяць тому +2

      Honestly, you can get really close by making a partscaster with Fender parts and Overdrive Guitar Work’s Black Strat stuff

    • @chrisradzion2148
      @chrisradzion2148 Місяць тому

      @ my current partscaster Strat is my first guitars body (a 94 MIK black Squier) with a 70s “bullet” style Fender neck. I have Alnico V pickups that are marketed to be similar to the set sold by Seymour Duncan. They do a very good job. I’m just waiting to find a way to make the recessed switch for the mod. I’ve seen the brackets, but they’re like $60 for a tiny piece of metal, and usually have to be shipped from overseas. I have to see if I can craft an alternative myself. Not having that switch isn’t the end of the world for me. It’s kind of a hybrid between Gilmour’s Strat (with the color, pick guard, and short trem bar) and one Billy Corgan’s guitars (the vintage style neck with the bullet truss rod).

    ssl-5 has been a game changer. i used to have a gen-4 noiseless in my bridge position, let me tell you, it was horrible. they fit perfectly in the neck and middle positions, but not the bridge. the ssl-5 made big muffs, tube drivers, powerboost, you name it and it made it sound better.

    Very happy to have this comparison from you Mustafa. I think it good to keep in mind that you know the tones from your Texas Specials really well but will see additional possibilities getting equally familiar with the SSL-5. I have SSL-5 in the bridge for my Strat with SSL-1s, which I reckon are more similar to your Texas Specials, in the neck and mid. Also have the Obsidian controls and switching to allow 7-way switching (adds bridge plus neck and bridge/mid/neck switching position). To my ear, SSL-5 has an extra measure of fullness, which for some of the tones, doesn't make much difference but for others makes all the difference.

    A bit late on this but, for Another Brick Part 1, perhaps David used his 0001 Strat, which he used for the rhythm on Part 2, which would then make sense for the Texas specials to be closer.
    Not sure perhaps I’m wrong but just some food for thought.

  • @low3603
    @low3603 Місяць тому

    Great tones Mustafa, and amazing playing, you really nail Davids licks!! Just incase you aren't aware when I first got my Gilmour Strat I was taken aback by the pole pieces in the pick ups. If you have a close look at Dave's guitar you will see all the poles under the D and G strings are raised considerably and the poles under the B strings are sunken into the pickups. This is pretty consistent on all 3 pickups. No doubt Dave and Phil did a lot of tone tweaking over the years. Phil Taylors book "The Black Strat" is a great read if you haven't already. Keep up the great work man!

    • @mustyguitar
      @mustyguitar  Місяць тому

      I definitely didn't know that. How does that effect the tone?

  • @Goldhand28
    @Goldhand28 Місяць тому

    The SSL-5 has waaay more output than a common or vintage pickup, so it adds more mid range to the sound. That explains why it sounds darker and more smooth (I guess), cause it rounds up the highs and gives it a tighter mid range. All a matter of taste of course to the sound you like or are looking for.
    I think it's fantastic and is very much essential to get close to Gilmours tone on heavy overdrive and distortion sounds :) On cleans it might lack a bit of that glassy/pristine/clear vintage pickup sound you get from a Strat usually. Great playing btw ... reaaally good man!

  • @endesp

    I have installed the SSL5T version with a special pot. On 1 the pickup is tapped, which produces a vintage tone of around 6K, at 5 is another usable, very clean sound (a mix of tapped and full coil), and at 10 I get the full 13K of the pickup.

    • @BorysOliinyk
      @BorysOliinyk Місяць тому +1

      I wish I knew that this pod existed before installing my SSL-5.
      I installed a pot with a “no-load” pot at 10 because SSL-5 with load sounded a bit muddy.
      But sometimes I want just a regular tone from the bridge and such a pot would be really helpful for me.

    REALLY suprised to hear that your SSL-5 is darker than the T Special. I’ve had one with a CS69 set with SSL5 in the bridge. CS69 neck, Fat 50s in middle and SSL-5 in bridge. I ALWAYS found it to be much brighter with significantly less bass. Since then I’ve stuck with similar pups with bridge being slightly higher output with better results. This makes me want to revisit the ssl-5. Maybe I should’ve raised it up more. The FS-1 was even more brighter and thinner than the SSL5. Strat bridge position is just a finicky position. I’ve even contemplated the SSL5/2 to tame the highs.

    • @joelmarksbury4376
      @joelmarksbury4376 Місяць тому

      T-Specials are made to be brighter than 69s and Fat50’s. They were originally made for SRV and his tone is fairly bright. If you try the SSL5 again, make sure you get the correct height as that can make a major difference.

    • @mustyguitar
      @mustyguitar  Місяць тому

      yeah it's dark alright. honestly, my texas specials' pickup height was fairly high too. about the same for ssl-5. I didn't measure it though.

    Gilmour didn't have the SSL-5 until About Face. Was not on The Wall album, but was on for some of the live tour for the Wall. Then he switched to his red strats with EMG pickups, and didn't pull the black strat out again until On an Island. Most of the music fans of Floyd love doesn't have the SSL-5. If you want his black strat sound like from Meddle to before The Wall, get a full set of CS-69's.

    • @mustyguitar
      @mustyguitar  Місяць тому

      I think you’re missing the point of this video. Gilmour wanted ssl-5 for fender black strats. I mean ssl-5 is approved by himself. Modded or not. I can’t switch to dimarzio for wall sounds or cs69 for earlier stuff in a video. Just showing the ssl5 compared to vintage style pickups.

    • @ronaldflint681
      @ronaldflint681 Місяць тому

      @ Okay got it. Just wanted to point that out because I made the mistake. I put the Gilmour set (fat 50’s, cs-69, ssl-5) in my strat. Sounds good but didn’t realize til later that that’s not what’s used for most of the music I care about. Had been putting my switch in the middle cs-69, preferring that pickup the most. His black strat was a 69 and kept the stock pickups for most of their golden days.

      @@mustyguitar I'm struggling to find the right words but I hear a more natural sound with the texas specials on clean/low gain tones. With muff/fuzz or higher gain the difference is not as audible as on cleaner tones and that's where the texas wins. Perhaps a fine tuning could fix this but I don't hear any reason to change to the SSL-5 pick ups. Great video though as usual. You the man!

I know Gilmour said that he used the baby blue strat for rhythm parts on Another Brick In The Wall part 2, I don't know maybe he used it also for part 1, that could be it maybe. One other thing that I'm sure your aware of is that Gilmour would have still had the DiMarzio FS-1 pickup in the bridge on the black strat while recording The Wall Album.

It’s a nice option to have. With the 5 you get fat saturated tone and much better sustain and a tone punching thru the mix! The 1W is amazing for a 1W, but get yourself a proper suitable amp and your tone will be the last 25 % of tone bliss that will make your playing shines even more ! 😊
