Spent 2023 working on fitness. Did keto and working out 3 times a week for 8 months straight from jan 1 with no cheat days. Lost 70 lbs from 282 to 212. Took the holiday months off from keto and admittedly gained back 10lbs, but still working out and starting again January 1 with my plan and prep for the next 6 to 8 months with a goal to get down to 185lbs. Im 38 now and haven't been 185 since freshman year of high school. Its never too late to start and totally agree with Mike on fitness. Im in the south salt lake area and hopefully will get to show up someday and get my butt handed to me on the judo mats! Its new years eve and raising a glass of water to you Mike. Great advice for 2024.

Thanks, I am actually excited to get back to the keto part for weight loss. Its not easy but i should have started this years ago. Just feel so much better. I owe a big thanks to guys like Mike, Garand Thumb, John Lovell, and others that are similar for convincing me to start this journey for preparing myself for the worst but also getting myself in shape to be a better dad to my kids. Didn't want my kids to have a dad that couldn't run around outside with them very well. Looking forward to progress in 2024

Good work, man! As someone a few years older I'd only give one piece of advice: stay on it NOW, don't let yourself hit 40 and still be struggling to keep your weight under control. Sounds like that's your plan so you know what's up...
I started to get my act together two years ago and it was seemingly right as my metabolism was slowing. Used to be able to drop from 230 down to 190 (pretty much my peak in-shape weight, but I'm also freakishly wide-shouldered/barrel-chested) in like 45 days just by getting into a jogging routine. Now I'm pushing my joints to the limit going 5 days a week, alternating between 4-5 mile trail runs and weight training, with twice weekly 5 mile hikes with a 45lb pack and I'm struggling to get below 240... So stay on top of it before you hit that "wall" (hopefully you don't, I just know a lot of people my age that did)
Anyway, congrats on getting in shape. It's not an easy thing to do, especially when leaving one's physical prime, so take pride in your accomplishments! Here's to a new year (let's hope a better one at that)

Thanks for the encouragement and great advice. It definitely is harder now that im "older" but now that im older i find i also have more discipline to follow through. But yeah, joints is one thing i have to be careful of. I lightly injured my knee and opposite shoulder this last year so trying for lower impact. Im very blessed to have a job that offers a monthly wellness benefit so I've been building out my garage gym over the last 3 years. So that has helped with the working out part. But i can say it's probably 80% diet and 20% working out. The best advice i can give is lay off the sugar and carbs. You can't outrun a bad diet! At least that's what I've noticed

As someone who prepared for everything and anything I could think of, I overlooked one thing and that one thing was my house burning to the ground because of a lightning strike when I was an hour away from home working and completely helpless to do anything about it. I lost everything that I had stockpiled and prepped for over a 10 year period. I lost it all. Including my chocolate lab which still crushes my heart to this day a year later.
Spread your preps out in different areas , get a small storage unit to keep some redundant preps in just in case.
Also I couldn't recommend an emergency bag that you keep in your vehicle at all times because that was literally the only thing I had left and it sustained me for awhile until I could get my life back together.
God bless y'all and keep your chin up, we're going to get through this....

When I was 5, my dad started taking me squirrel hunting & letting me shoot. I'm a female. I LOVED it! I got to learn about hunting & gun safety but I also got to spend some awesome times with my dad & my 2 older brothers. I've been quail & deer hunting where we live in the SE. My dad has been elk hunting yearly for the past 25 years since we got a place in ID, but he's never taken me elk hunting. I'm happy you're taking your kids so early. It builds a lifetime of memories & they learn so much by watching their "hero".

Several years ago now I went On a hike with some family and my St Bernard tore a paw at the back end of 6mile trail in AK and I had to carry her out. Talk about eye opening and your example is so perfect for what you might need to do when you’re not expecting anything bad to happen. Did that trail many times after that and every time was a learning experience. From a random sickness soon as I got to the back to a freak snowstorm when it wasn’t supposed to get below 50. Absolutely anything and everything happens when you least expect it.

Hi mike, I’ve been getting uncomfortable these past few months. I started getting tired of my weight being 250 pounds. Decided to walk 45 minutes a day and then some cardio along with some weights. I’m now down to 190 which I know isn’t much but I feel better and my goal is to get to 180-185 almost there! It all starts with wanting to do something about it and getting to it! My next goal is to get to the range more this year.

I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis back in the spring. It hit hard and fast as far as symptoms. I deep dived on the research to try and do what I can do on my end apart from the meds they prescribe. I found out that prior to the food pyramid, the treatment for any autoimmune disease was red meat, salt and water. So - that’s what I did. For 3 months - that’s all I had. It was so effective that when I had a blood lab panel, my RA factor was negative and my b12 level was so high, my dr asked me to stop taking my men’s multivitamin. I also dropped a lot of bloaty weight, for obvious reasons. No sugar or processed foods will do that. I have worked other things in since. But I still eat clean, rarely drink alcohol and at 45, I feel better than I’ve ever felt as far as strength (I work out around 5 days a week and have a very targeted routine).
All I am saying is - as far as preparedness goes, start in the kitchen. Your grocery prices will also go down. Overall preparedness is a journey that gets modified as you go. One person’s formula doesn’t work for everyone. You won’t know what works for you until you do it. The “doing” is what shows you what is for you or not for you.

Great podcast, and great message, as always, Mike. Have and love your book. What you teach your boys now, and the time and effort you take to do it, will be forever ingrained in their little brains. I come from a family of eight. My father was quite older than me, hard working, functioning alcoholic and didn’t have the time to spend with my younger brother and I. I don’t fault him for that…he gave me a great work ethic. Fortunately, I had a great mother and older brothers and sisters that took on that role and taught us how to fight, be self sufficient, got us involved in little league and martial arts and taught us to be aware and safe. Which kind of led me into law enforcement. I was always able to rely on them if I needed them, and me at 59, and them in their late 60’s and 70’s, I still can. Your boys will learn that the best things in life were taught to them by you and your wife, and that they can always rely on each other. Happy New Year, be safe and vigilant, and above all thank you for serving this great country, and for what you continue to do.

He called it right about being able to carry your kids possibly for miles... perhaps to get food, water, or other emergency needs, maybe just to get out and away from a bad situation. Beyond that... I've always said you better be prepared to instantly becoming homeless, and you had better be able to walk miles to get the above-mentioned necessities. You had better be fit and prepared enough to have and be able to carry whatever emergency supplies you will need on the streets. Beyond even that... you absolutely must be capable of defending yourself and your belongings, which people ARE GOING TO TAKE! I have trained and practiced for years with several times having been homeless, and I can tell you that at the age of 50, I am not ready for what's coming next!

Right on point. I’ve have added cold plunge since before Christmas. Up too 4 times for 5 minutes a week, coupled with heavy functional lifting. Now added carnivore diet for January seeing major results from mental as well as physical. Will move onto a paleo diet after carnivore month after a 3 day water fast.

Thanks Mike. I find there is always something I need to work on. Personal development…. It always comes back to this. I can do better. The physical is the hardest, I neglect my wellbeing often to reach for the next goal, but the next goal should be me. Time to do the hard stuff

Great video. I'm 62 years old, had a stroke 3 years ago. I'm training Hybrid. Weights, running, rucking, walking and different real martial arts. Jujitsu, Mauy Thai and urban combatives.
I can't carry a firearm but I'm training with different blades. Getting a cross bow and a regular bow.
I want to be prepared as much as I can. I think 2024 is going to be bad. Like the saying goes, WHEN SECONDS COUNT, POLICE ARE MINUTES AWAY!

Your physical physique says a lot about you as a whole . I lost my 6 pack along with my 20’s but I workout in some dynamic every day , I train with firearms, I hunt , hike, fish, and own a construction company. I’m moving til it’s time to go to bed . It’s the same discipline that keeps you fit that keeps you prepared

That's why I like strongman training so much, not only is it fun, but it's extremely functional. You dont have to be the strongest, but using the implementes does tranfer over to every day things very well plus strongman is full of conditioning.

Amen to all that. We as a society are too fat and too embarrassed or arrogant to admit it.
We need to run far away from genetically modified foods and processed food.
We need to exercise and make sweet treats a rare TREAT again. Not a daily treat.
Be humble and learn all you can. Get on the mat and learn. Just like the flashy CQB is fun, jujitsu is actually fun too.
