    As an Island nation this is the information that should be taught in schools. So many people get caught out by the tides while walking/swimming the coastline. Those who do not live by the coast just don’t understand the power of the sea and get themselves in trouble. Truly excellent video Rach. Thank you.🙏

      Hi Andrews, thank you for your lovely comment. I see from posts about when to meet at places that people might not have grasped the tidal effect, so I hope this helps people n some small way.

      I love a good nose around at low water springs, I'm always hoping to spot some treasure, but last time it was just a couple of fishing hooks, a paddle for a dinghy and a shoe that I found. Less treasure hunting, more litter-picking, but I don't mind, I find it quite cathartic 🏊‍♀️😀

    That was GRRRREAT Rachel, learnt so much. Good tip about swimming against tide at start then freeloading. I ‘attempted’ to do that today, the flow was left to right as looking from beach, so my ‘plan’ was to swim out to left buoy, then to right buoy, then back. What happened? By the time I’d reached buoys the tide flow had pushed me to right buoy. I then attempted to reach left buoy against tide, needless to say I never made it, after 50mins I figured I best head in, but even that was hard as tide again pushed me to right and made shore feel like it was never going to be reached. Looking at tide flow chart in Tides app showed me that the tide was midflow, so strongest point of day. I ended up in the water for an hour and 5 mins which was too long. Lesson I’ll put down to experience: if the tide is strong just swim to one buoy and back and don’t swim against tide if at all possible. I’m also going to limit my time in water to 40 mins now as the attack of the shivers post swim was quite dramatic !
    My experience is growing and your videos really help. I didn’t know the term neap tide before today.

    • @EverydayAthleteRach
      @EverydayAthleteRach 3 роки тому +1

      Hi Alan sounds like you had a bit of a frightener today. I would suggest swimming parallel to the beach withiin or just out of your depth to a point that is opposite something on the beach. Flow is almost always stronger in deeper water, buoys are generally located in water where they will float most of the time, so by default are in deeper water. When I swim at the beach I swim towards a red post on a slipway and back to a specific beach hut. I'm usually less than 20m from the water's edge, so can ge out in a hurry if needs be. Safe swimming 🏊😄

    Hi Rachel... I’m a bit late to the party simply because I wanted to save this video for a time when I could sit down, concentrate, and learn... and wow... do I have a lot to learn!! This 🇨🇦ian gal swims in remote lakes and rivers, and unfortunately, knows squat-all about the tides. The Pacific Ocean is a 3-4 hour drive from my home, and it is extremely rugged coastline (not much for beaches). I’ll be watching this video several times over so that I can build a foundation of knowledge, since I would like to swim in the sea at some point in my life. Thanks for this one, it was excellent... very clear, concise, and just the right amount of detail for a newb like me.

    I've learnt a lot as always - this would be perfect to play in school Geography lessons from Primary to A Level - I'm not sure if coastal tides are on syllabus but who cares? It's fascinating stuff to know and important.
    It should also be played in PHSE lessons at schools in coastal regions for the child's safety awareness. Easy to go running into water without knowing the dangers.
    I once swam in sea somewhere in South West France and there was so much litter and rubbish in there it was gross. I think it might have been a bay close to the mouth of a river.
    And in other climates jellyfish and sea urchins can be more prevalent in gentler waters.
    Final comment I love your 'serial chiller' fleece - i might treat myself to one if they come in different colours. You must have been chilly when in your t-shirt though bbbbrrrrrrrrr Lol :D

      Hi Dave, thanks for the lovely comment. It was warmer on the weekend I was in a t-shirt, so I was just fine and dandy. It is a rare occasion that I swim barefoot, one of the main reasons is that my local beach is pebbly and in the colder months I haven't got time to eek my way up the beach as getting out of the elements and dried and dressed quickly is critical. 🏊😄

      I think I love the feel of bare feet in the water too much to want to cover feet - it's earthing but in the water right? But I realise it's vital in some circumstances.
      I'll be doing sunrise and moonlight swimming in my local heated lido all winter if it stays open. I'm a cheat i know lol but at least I'll be outdoors. Do you ever swim in man made pools? I've a friend who loves the natural cleansing vibe of the sea so much she can't do man made and this was even before coronavirus!
