Arpeggios and scales are fundamental to get a feel for the harmony. I think teachers are correct to focus on those. It's funny, whenever someone says they're playing from pure improvisation, it can be confined to the combination of arpeggios and scales, with maybe some chromatic embellishment.
Everything stated are sound musical elects but it takes an open minded and intelligent person to articulate as well. Much is missing from those who hide behind transcribed ideals,
Is the bass player singing what he's playing/ playing what he's singing and we are not hearing because he does not have a vocal microphone? Herb Ellis suggested that most improvisors do this. I have only noticed it with mostly guitarists and pianists. Thoughts?
I didn't notice, but Barney certainly sings while he plays. You can see it here. Also, I saw him, along with Charlie Byrd and Herb Ellis, "singing" at the Showboat in Silver Spring, Maryland. Barney and Herb "sing"; Charlie doesn't "sing," but he feels what he's playing. ( Historic present tense! )
Such superb advice so wonderfully explained. Loved the way Barney sang along to the solo.
Barney was the man. So musical such a beautiful cat.
Thanks for posting these fantastic videos!
Great player, great teacher, great person 🎸🎸👍👍
Couldn't agree more!
It is like Sweet Georgia Brown; beautifully played.
Most music teachers must watch this vid. Barney expands the situation rather than simply playing arpeggios and scales. Great course.

Some Nino Rota at 7:18
Is that "Nica's Dream" he is playing at the end?
I think that was Barney's Dream. :) close but not NIca's
