I am from America, was 15 and a freshman in high school when it came down. My dad explained to me why it was built in the first place. My uncle a historian and we were discussing the wall the other day, as I wanted to learn more.
I am an Azerbaijani, I was a child when Germany United. I remember how my parents were happy for Germany back in that time. Germany is a great nation. We have two German settlements in Azerbaijan (Annendolf and Helendorf). I hope Germany will be great again! Lots of love from Baku, Azerbaijan. My Caucasian tost to you with a glass of Helendorf wine: Congratulations on your unification Day and as we say here may you never be separated again and may you never face the wars that you had (WW1 and WW2). Long live Germany!
Interesting documentary. But i would like to hear the opinion of those Eastern Germans who needed to drastically shift their lives in the new system, how their life changed after 30 years in FRG, what they can say, what was before and how they exist nowadays. Of course, many of them moved to the developed Western lands. Would be appreciated if DW takes interview from former Easterners...
I'm British and I was 6 years old when the wall fell. I remember my parents watching on the TV. I didn't really understand what was going on, but I knew it was something huge. We are so close to throwing it all away again. We have to do better.
I'm No German but I loved to read books about the escape of the East Germany to the west Germany. Still fresh from my Memories how the youth crumble that Berlin Wall after our own People Power Revolution in 1985.
I am so glad my mother got to see the Berlin Wall fall. She grew up in Ulm and left to live in the USA as a child as soon as WW2 was over. Ich bin so froh, dass meine Mutter den Fall der Berliner Mauer miterlebt hat. Sie ist in Ulm aufgewachsen und ist als Kind gleich nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg in die USA ausgewandert.
I remember it well. Back in 1969, Dan Rowan, co-host of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in, predicted during a News of the Future sketch, that the Berlin wall would come down in 1989, but was quickly replaced by a moat filled with alligators. Little did anyone know at the time...
It's heartbreaking to think about how Berlin Wall seperated families and led to so many tragedies. Yet, It eventually fall brought hope and freedom to millions lives
Watch in this and remembering watching it live as it happened and how the East Germans were longing for freedom, I suddenly am faced with the reality that in the former GDR, there is an almost nostalgia happening in the former GDR. Do these people not remember? It’s happening in Russia too. Nostalgia for regimes that controlled even thought! I don’t understand it.
The images of this times are engraved in my memory. I was nine when it happened. My sister even has a piece of the wall. We all studied German in my family so despite we don't speak the language, i personality keep a special relation with this country this times were so full of hope. Now the USA is simply playing chess with us. I hope for a better future

People think that the USA is the greatest country of the 21st century but in my opinion Germany is the greatest country. This country was looted by the allies during World War 1 , rebuilt itself and dominated Europe for 15 years like hell , again divided by the allies and suffered the impact of cold war but still it is the 3 largest economy , produced many great scientists , and the world knows about the German engeeneering, technology, manufacturing . Salute to their leaders and leadership and to their people. 🙏
What are you talking German economy is doing worse than the American 🇺🇸 economy is not to mention Germany is weak militarily why else would Germany still want the American military in Germany even now in 2024.
It’s also successful because the allies acknowledged their mistakes following WW1 and helped rebuild it to what it is today. I can’t give Germany all the credit for its success today; it was a group project.
@barnibussnaples6561 allied took all the German scientist. The US does not realise it's mistake, it saw an opportunity to create its global hegemony and dominated the global order
@@barnibussnaples6561 The end of communist regime started in Poland. Everybody gives credit to Germany because of the Berlin Wall fall "nice picture". Poland was the first one to have free election. It was in june 1989. The fall of the Berlin Wall took place in November.
And then we gradually recognized that the EU (which didn't exist in 1989) was just a softer form of oppression, representing mainly American (and not European) interests. It would be interesting to see how many of those people are satisfied with today's political, economic, and social situation - although election results in the former GDR illustrate that perfectly. @@pwalk4160 True, but "unification" was fake from the start and it turned into financial and economic exploitation as stronger countries draw skilled labor away from less developed members, while their financial institutions suck them dry. Today, societies are falling apart, rotting from the inside, and we live for today, not caring about our past or future.

Very good Documentary, I crossed over to West Berlin in 1986 with my father to escape from the Communist regime, I wish every young person watch this, specially those young people that today they in support for the Socialist Democratic Party like in America they have no idea who they are really supporting, in my eyes Democrats were and are the Communists they showed their true colors in the 70s and 80s, DDR stands for Deutsche Demokratik Republik they were the communist regime controlled by the Soviets was the East block when Germany was divided into two separate countries The West and the East, those were the times I will never forget risking our lives to escape to the West for freedom, and today makes me sick when I see young people thinking Socialism Communism is a wonderfull thing and they are supporting the Democratic party thinking they are such a wonderful party, the only difference is today They are calling them selves Socialist Democratic party and they took out the word Communism it's still same party nothing changed just the wording that's all.

I've always wondered why East Germany and North Korea use(d) the word "Democratic" in their title when they are/were anything but.
It's a trick of words. A centralized govt that keeps people down with real threats. At least the East and West spoke the same language.
Guess, in 1940s they were indeed more democratic than the other sides.
