Well, William Friedkin died today...William Peter Blatty died in 2017, but I'm guessing Friedkin never appeared on Letterman, so this interview is the next best thing. The book Blatty's promoting, Legion, became The Exorcist III, which he himself directed in 1990. The studio wanted it to be tied into The Exorcist mythology to make it more marketable, so they forced Blatty to include an exorcism scene at the end, which in retrospect feels very forced and removed from the rest of the story. Still an underrated horror film with great performances from George C. Scott, Jason Miller and Brad Dourif. RIP to both Williams.
I think the studio helped him. I’ve seen both versions and the one released in 90’ is better. The directors cut works as a book but makes for a very anti-climatic end.
I've been hearing how great Sorcerer is for years, so I finally watched it a couple of months ago...WOW! Incredible film...it deserves so much more recognition.
Dear Exorcist unforgettable author. I keep you for ever in my heart. I adore and over read The Exorcist, and I own a great collection of dvds and Blu rays of the movie. I have not yet read Legion, but of course I will. R.I.P. Handsome and gentle. So kind man.
Well, that is very fascinating. Dave was one of the few late night talk show hosts who made it possible for everyone to see and hear interesting conversations with fascinating people. You won't get it from any other late night host. I'll tell you that much.
@@graxjpg Yeah, but that was way back when. That hasn't happened since Dave and Johnny retired. Once they retired, everything was all about the celebrities and politics.
@@KungEMuller johnny retired longer ago than his entire career lasted at the tonight show.. more than 30yrs… he was great but conan and craig ferguson both had interesting guests. the latter being comparable to any of the names mentioned in terms of amazing guests.
@@graxjpg True, but I'll tell you this right now. The current late night guys can't even try to do one show without bringing up politics. They talk about politics nonstop. They even talk about politics during the interviews. That's messed up!
@@KungEMuller yeah, it started with bill o’reilly beating colbert in the ratings after dave left and soon after trevor noah and others just started doing half politics half jokes. the only current thing i halfway follow is conans podcast, but im not much of a fan of that format. he does good charlie rose style interviews though.
Me too. It is a rare case of an audiobook being just as entertaining as the movie, if not more so. Blatty does the character voices almost better than the actual actors from the movie, he really puts his soul into it. He's got such a chilling voice too, even in just the narrative parts where he's reading as himself, its a very gravelly voice perfect for setting the dark atmosphere, but also Regan's parts as the demon, he's just a natural. Even when he's reading as Kinderman. It's all just perfect. I wish I could get him to narrate all my favourite audiobooks, he would have nailed them all. For sure though, the Exorcist audiobook read by Blatty is legendary and one of the most favourite items of media I've collected in all the years I've been collecting movies, e-books and audiobooks - thats a standout piece.
Soft-spoken and gentle. Blatty is the Bob Ross of the supernatural
R.I.P. William

Technically he directed Exorcist III in 1989. It was released in 1990.

Legion was so thought provoking. I was shocked how good it is. One of my favorite books!
I'm glad to find someone say so. It's one of the best novels of that kind.
This is posted today because “Exorcist” director, William Friedkin just died.

WP Blatty also co-wrote the 1964 Peter Sellers film 'A Shot in the Dark'
yes he did - it was interesting to see his name come up on those great animated credits
He wrote a lot of stuff.....
He was such a kind, dignified, brilliant man who doesn't get the credit he deserves. He could teach young writers a thing or two.
Glad I found this.
I hear “affirmative, can you hear me.”

merv and cavett had interesting guests in the 60s and 70s, the latter being a counterexample to your point throughout his entire career

Not surprised that Blatty would have an interest in paranormal EVP.
Was a great actor as well as a writer
VIDEO REALLY WELL DONE
I LOVE THAT BOOK! LEGION.

@5:25 SPIRIT BOXES do this; pick up voices. @6:30 . I heard it!!!! ❤ Ghost Box Voices.
To me it sounded like Anton's drum roll.
I have the The Exorcist on audible, it's read by the Author himself.

This guy worked for psychological warfare in the Air-force. Probably helping develop V2K
Blatty is a king. I bought ALL his boojs. But on EVP see the filn White Noise, the original one.
That's what ghost hunters call an evp
I thought it was quite a compelling read....I do not believe in ghosts or any such supernatural beings winging about, b< the book was fun.

Yeah, I read the book in the 70s Jr high school as did my mom. Didn't bother me but my mom quit reading it!😂 Know thy enemy.
Who's the author of the book he's talking about " Breakthrough"
Back when authors could actually get on talk shows. Sigh...
I heard it.

He's Lebanese right?
Didn't william friedkin produce the last and worst year of the original Star Trek? I could be wrong.
Friedkin never had any involvement in Star Trek.
@@a.champagne6238 well, I did say "...I could be wrong ".
Very smooth liar and good story to sell his books.

Letterman is his good old annoying self in this episode. He got better in his later years tho'.
Has an Atheist ever required having an exorcism?
What a crock!
First comment! 🎉
You mess with the darkness, it messes with you. He's not in a good place now.
And why is that? Everything he did he did to bolster beleif in a world full of skepticism. Would God not appreciate that?
