Honestly, they Don't Get to "Elect" anyone there. That's how TurtleNeck the Con McConnell got in to begin with. Same with Bashear. The people didn't want either of them. But when Selections are rigged, you get whoever they TELL you that you will have. Say what you will, but it's been that way for a long long time there.
All of east Kentucky is extremely poverty stricken. Central an western side of Kentucky are like 2 completely different states an or country. It used to be thriving here when there was coal mines. Them coal mines have been shut down by the thousands causing so many to lose jobs. It’s affected this area for years an the state continues to do nothing about bringing jobs to this area. Many many people I know have to drive in excess of an hr + to work a decent paying job.
The money is in Central/Northern Kentucky and that’s who Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell represent. Sure, they’ll sign on to Gov. Beshear’s letter requesting federal disaster relief, if it helps them get votes, but they don’t care about Eastern Kentucky. The reason Eastern Kentucky is so poor is that the land and people have been exploited by outsiders for centuries - mostly, but not exclusively coal companies. The latest has been Big Pharma, which introduced Oxycontin and the resulting addiction epidemic.

Really sloppy news. Real news would tell us how it happened beyond just rain. Is it topography or a large river? No mention of either, nor how people died.
Democrats are blaming it on climate change lol. Here's the truth The Louisville area has been subject to flooding for thousands of years. Low-lying land along the Ohio River is covered frequently in the winter and spring. Ohio River floods typically occur over days or weeks and waters rise relatively slowly. Louisville is also prone to flash flooding from interior streams. Heavy rains can also cause intense flash flooding along local streams.
I live in the area. This tragedy happened because we received a freakishly large amount of rain (9+ inches), in a very short period of time, after a very prolonged hot dry spell, during the middle of the night Wednesday into Thursday morning. We are used to flooding here, given the terrain, but this massive rain event covered a very large area, affecting multiple communities at once. That normally isn't the case. People died because they didn't have a lot of warning and the water rose so fast that they couldn't escape safely by the time they realized anything was wrong. Those who escaped, only had time to make it to their roof, the hillside, or to cling to nearby trees. The water was cold and swift. Don't forget it was the middle of the night. You've never known the dark unless you are deep in the mountains when the power is knocked out. Second to that is being inside of a cave. It was just a multitude of factors. We don't live on the hillsides because many of them just aren't able to be built upon. They are solid rock, not just dirt. It would be an expensive endeavor that most of us just simply cannot afford. Our family land and homes were started in the valleys so they could raise a farm and grow enough crops to try to feed their families. Many still do the same today. This video shows Troublesome Creek. Yes, creek! Many hills have natural springs. Those springs run off into the creeks in the many hollers (valleys for non-natives) at the base of these beautiful mountains. Those creeks then feed into the Kentucky River. Hence, all of the massive flooding this time being so widespread and destructive. Many live here because we love it here. Our family history, tied to this land, brings us a sense of pride. Many of us choose to live here because we want to be near our family and friends. Many of us also do not have an option to leave. We just don't have the resources, even if we wanted to. The resources we need are often ones only our families and friends can help us provide. We don't have access to public transportation. Families share cars and rides. There is very little affordable housing. We tend to crowd together and live on land our family has owned for generations. There aren't many childcare facilities. We depend on family and friends to help raise the next generation. I could go on and on. Our area is so misunderstood, but that's okay. I'm sure I misunderstand other cultures that are different from mine, too. I hope that my comment has helped answer some of your questions and gave you a better insight into the beautiful region I call home.
Dee Dee Wells, you gave all the pertinent info that the news media failed to: Troublesome Creek, 9+ inches of rain, rocky hills that would create runoff, dark night after losing electricity, people clinging to any high spot or tree. That brings tears, which is what the news media wanted but failed to do. But let me tell John G, it is warming of the Atlantic Ocean that is sending more moisture in the air from the Gulf that drops so much rain in such a short time. Americans must unite and understand our many places and challenges.
I hope they manage to get to as many people as possible before it's too late. That is crazy how quick this all happened. I didn't think this would happen when the weather said there would be a rainstorm. I hope you all are okay and everyone can get to safety, both the people and the animals.
If only infrastructure funds were used for it's intended purpose. SMH That's the problem overall. Years of neglect and money not being used to properly take care of things. Just a waste pot of money literally going down by the drain.
This is heartbreaking for the people of Kentucky. But, why are today's journalist so unable to describe precise locations descriptions? A vague general reference to "eastern" Kentucky and one or two towns mentioned, how about a map for viewers to see, or better yet how about you actually do journalist research and name the actual rivers that have crested and contributed to the flooding?
God bless us all. 2 Chronicles 7:14 Kjv 14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Why are there so many areas of Kentucky so poverty stricken? Dont they have powerful poltical representation in Washington? Do they not work to bring relief to these povety stricken people? Why do they vote for the same people in Washington who dont give a phuck about them? Where is the disconnect?
Honestly, they Don't Get to "Elect" anyone there. Most Kentuckians have known for a few decades now that the Selections are all rigged for the ones the corrupt ones Want in office no matter the will of the people.

@@deewells79 thanks for explaining! I was also wondering what had happened to cause the flood.
@@louhortonsculpture you're welcome!

"Hindman" is mispronounced; it should be pronounced as though one is describing a hind end (I'm serious). The high school in Buckhorn was referenced alongside a playground, without any context of whether there happens to be an elementary school next door. Do better, ABC.
Buckhorn is K-12 combined in one location. They are so far out in the county that it wasn't possible to consolidate them with the county's other two high school's in the mid-90's.
