  • This webinar will explore the intersections between psychoanalysis and emerging artificial intelligence technology. It would examine how Freudian categories, particularly those related to unconscious processes, can be applied or reinterpreted in artificial intelligence, considering its capacity for data processing and autonomous learning. This seminar would also address the implications of AI on our understanding of reality and its impact on social bonds from a psychoanalytic perspective. Possible similarities and differences between human cognition and artificial intelligence will be discussed, especially regarding emotions, desires, and behaviors. Finally, the webinar would offer a space to reflect on the future of psychoanalysis in an era dominated by advanced technology, highlighting the ethical and theoretical challenges that arise from this convergence.
    Moderator: Nicolle Zapien.
Panellists: Fernando Castrillon, Luca Possati & Leora Trub.

in response to the potential of "machine to machine projective identification"... would each machine, receiving unique sets of data not end up with an "accent"... a unique bias which would affect it's "expectations " of the response of the other machine... in effect a projection on the other machine... which would in turn react to that particular stimulus based on it's own unique bias, potentially creating a cascade of interleaving biased responses which could lead to misunderstanding, misrepresentation and conflict... just like between people?

The undeveloped political point for me is the CBT has already captured NHS therapy and some of private providers of NHS Talking Therapies are using recorded sessions with clients to develop AI conversational agents for the NHS services, for the US and with an eye on the “global crisis” in common mental health disorders. For the many, as opposed to those who can afford psychoanalytic fees, it will soon be that therapy and the language of psychological life be AI generated CBT - 6 sessions of!

I feel disgruntled. I thought the IPA was far removed from all political issues, but I came across the IPA's letter condemning the Hamas terror attack. Of course, it is a horrific event that needed to be condemned. However, when I researched anything about genocide in Palestine, I couldn't find anything. Why is that? Isn't the main purpose of psychoanalysis to speak about what is not being spoken? What is the reason for this silence?
I want to share my thoughts and feelings because if anyone feels there is something wrong here, you are not alone. There is a significant silence and wrongdoing in our society. I am a young psychologist from Istanbul and I won't be silent.

Psychoanalysis is a very political discourse contrary to its claims for openness to “truth”. It tends to be conservative (small “c”, let’s say centrist) and of course traditionally wields its theoretical understanding - to know better than you who you are - with a somewhat authoritarian hand. The issue of Palestinian rights to self-determination and current Zionist genocidal activity in Gaza is a taboo subject for many analysts. As a profession it does at the same time 1:21:09 have a significant left political contingent - and always has.

@@paulananke Where taboo subjects exist, and even obvious shames aren't discussed, unfortunately, one cannot truly speak of self-understanding or self-awareness. It's no different from playing a game of blind man's bluff, trying to find things by groping in the dark... Thank you for responding to my voice. It's comforting to know it's not lost in the void.
