    1:12 " A million shells were fired." This is actually a massive understatement. The germans launched about two million shells in their opening bombardment, the entire battle over the course of 10 months estimates between 40 and 60 million shells. On the 21st of Febuary, 1916, the German 5th army attacked the allied city Verdun. As the last line of defense against the Germans before they took Paris both sides fought hard. The battle would open with hundreds- if not thousands of shells of artillery, the first to come. The battle would last over 300 days and through it all hundreds of thousands of soldiers- French, British and German would be killed or lost, being shot, drowning in their trenches from being to wounded to move being blown to pieces, or losing their lungs to German gas. The French would stand strong and win the hellish battle with 4 words on their mind. "They shall not pass."

It's been more than a century, and parts of the battlefield are still off limits thanks to unexploded ordnance, gas shells that never burst, and arsenic levels a thousand times the normal levels. Verdun was so hellish, it destroyed the land it was fought on for generations yet to come.

    Plenty have said what a great song it is, so I'm just going to mention one thing I really like about this track.
    Lyric: "And the judgement has begun, nowhere to run"
    What was General Erich von Falkenhayn's code name for the Verdun offensive?
    Operation Gericht (Judgement)
    Maybe it wasn't intended, but I like to think it was.

It's said that after a battle, he will busy himself with guiding the families of common soldiers to where they've fallen, and carrying their souls across the Bone River on his back.

      @Peter Parlee-Carr It has been proven that Germany could pay it's war reparations as although the total amount seems astronomical they were allowed a lot of time to pay them, so in total reparations were only a small part of the annual budget. Not only that but german wealth in industry and resources was left untouched by the war. The reasons why the economy crashed was because the governement refusing to pay out of pride defaulted on it's payments, which lead investors not to believe in them anymore and lead to a crash.

    • @ikillstupidcomments
      @ikillstupidcomments 3 роки тому +12

      @Peter Parlee-Carr The sad thing is that if the British and French hadn't backed down over Czechoslovakia, Hitler's forces could have been crushed early. If Germany had tried to fight the war in '37-'38, even on a single front, they would have been crushed. They still hadn't built up enough materiel or men to take Western Europe /or/ the Soviets until a few years after that point. A French/British force could have rolled straight into Western Germany basically any time before mid 1940. If Germany had been trying to fight Britain, France, and the Low Countries in the west, Poland and Czechoslovakia in the east, and Denmark and Norway in the north all at the same time instead of piecemeal, the war would have come to an abrupt end.
      Chamberlain goes down in history as one of the most blind and cowardly leaders of all time for damn good reason.

If you read dantes inferno(the book which most scholars use as a representation of hell) there are a lot of similarities between the two, read for yourselves. "The land was barren lacking any life. Its dead carcass strectched across miles of suffering and anguish. It drove virgil mad turning on his former friend. The two sat at opposite ends. Dante wanting to decend to the third ring with virgil stopping him. He had lost count of how many times he toiled to breakthrough,"-fourth ring of hell, dantes inferno.

    I heard about a battle, called Verdun. I was curious, so I looked it up.
    The first image I saw…it confused me at first (I didn’t properly grasp what exactly ww1 was like) then disturbed me. A colourized photo of a French soldier, slumped up against the inside wall of a half destroyed building . His entire lower body, was gone. Organs spilling out. Eyes vacant. On the left side of the building, was a field of bodies. Entangled in wire, drowned in the mud.
