It’s an E major chord underneath when John starts singing. And then gets to a C major chord for Tori’s entrance. Both are quite “sunny day” chords, but the way he gets to each is such a mental and emotional journey for the ears and heart. Jacob is a modulation master!

    • @Pooter-it4yg
      @Pooter-it4yg 8 місяців тому +1

There's nothing particularly "sunny" or anything else about any key in equal temperament.
Modulating isn't particularly difficult - it's just a string of different types of cadences used in different permutations.
I'm glad Collier does modulate because so few people do these days, but he usually wildly overdoes it just... because.

Well technically he s not like Bach, no contrapuntal counterpoint , and not like Mozart…no Sonata Allegro form.
What he does do…and is brilliant at ,is modern harmony starting from modern Big Band harmony, ie Thad Jones, then for voice, Take 6.
He understands timbre, how to record music, he s a master of dynamics and emotion, he can pull incredible riffs and he s in tune w time, his rhythmic abilities are …beyond.
      So yeah…he s a frickin genius

Normally, it’s only in Christmas music that you hear such a gloriously harmonious mix of notes with that big fat fuzzy warm feeling that massages your whole being into absolute bliss, but now Jacob Collier waltzes onto the sound stage and introduces that special rich sound into regular music that we listen to the rest of the year and suddenly, we can now experience that warmth year ‘round! I have been craving that satisfying sound for the last 50 years of my life and now I can finally hear this anytime I feel the urge, the need to destress with sweet delicious harmonies that I could only dream of before because I had to wait for Christmas to hear it. Jacob Collier is a musical savant, a harmonic genius of the highest calibre, at he’s not even 30 years old yett! I’m really looking forward to and anticipating a lot more masterfully crafted harmonies in the next several decades because there gas been a dearth, a famine of this kind of sound for as long as I can remember…….RELIEF AT LAST❗️This is just sooooo SWEET……. ❤️🙏🥲

11:29 Tori sounds SOOOO loving as she sings. What a gift. The world needs more of this.
11:58 The line she sings was given to her by Jacob.
12:48 & 16:00 is an incredible line. Again, JC created, Tori sung.
16:00 to the end is SOOOO powerful. The line at 16:13 is masterful
    16:30 throw down dramatic
16:37 is so over the top it circles back (using 13 chords) around (by 16:44) and seems to end but no, then at 16:49 it goes even further.
Maybe “more is less” in most contexts but with Jacob, many times, more with more + more + more is…mind-blowing my anything but less.

Jacob Collier gets to A flat on the strength of his raw style. That boy commits harmonic parkour to get where he's going!

Absolutely mesmerizing how Jacob's harmony flows like a waterfall, perfectly in sync with John Legend's "troubled water" line. It's like you can almost see the turbulent waters of a river rushing by with every note. Pure magic!

Love this reaction bro! You said " You can't play by his rules" In Jacobs music world, there are no rules. His level of imagination and his risk taking is beyond any of our comprehension. I'm just truly blessed to live in this world where we can listen to his music and his creations everyday.

"Fun Fact": Jacob did sang the part he wanted HER to sing himself... flawlessly!!! He filmed the recording with her being in the same room (here on YT). And she sang the parts and he stiched them together in post... WHAT??? He is doing ALL the work + the videos himself. Not human at all, he´s given the human appearance just to make all of the universal powers and possibilities bearable for us mere humans, right?

Hey guys, you asked what key he modulated to when transitioning from Abbey to John Legend. He brilliantly went from A flat MAJ to E flat MAJ. Jacob started the bar before on the A flat/2nd inversion and ended that frame on what ended up being B flat (dominant chord in new key). Perfectly done!

Jacob came up with Tori's licks. Watch the adorable video of her recording this with him. He sang each lick (in her range) and she learned them and slayed them (he said in an hour). Love seeing other people as moved in astonishment as I am when I hear the utter depth and rare beauty of Jacob's genius. Your reactions are exactly how I feel! Thanks for sharing! 😊
