I was looking for a new hobby and it came down to buying either a telescope or a drone. So I went with the latter and it was probably the coolest thing I ever bought! Camera drones only just appeared and the rules regarding unmanned aircraft were unknown to most, including me. I spent a lot of time with my new toy, marveling at how the world looked from high above. I was able to fly as high and as far as possible and it was amazing! I shared the videos with friends and family but unbeknownst to me, my uncle sent this unedited clip to Cork’s Red FM, who shared it on their social media.
I woke up one morning with an avalanche of notifications and messages from many Irish media outlets. The unedited clip went viral because apparently, no one had ever seen Cork city like this!
It did of course attract the attention of the IAA who informed me that flying like this was a danger to folks on the ground and to helicopters or planes that might be occupying the same airspace. It’s something that I didn’t think of, assuming my little drone was just an expensive toy that posed no real threat.
I was asked to take the clip down and I promptly complied. Yet, my video impressed folks enough for them to suggest that I do something better; to get educated about the rules of the air and be a responsible drone pilot. I studied for and got my drone pilots license and it laid the foundations to start a successful business!
I’m grateful for the people in the IAA who gave me a chance to prove that I could still enjoy drones while flying responsibly; and for the chance to turn it into something more than a hobby.

Traced my husbands family back to cork in the 1800's. Beautiful place and now I really want to take him there.

About 5 years ago I was visiting family in Perth, WA. During the visit I accompanied a female friend to the hairdresser. The girl doing her hair was from NI and when she heard that I came from Cork, she retorted, Oh, he'll be a langer.....nough said

Speaking as a more-or-less expat it's amazing how much a city can change in 26 years . Old buildings gone, new buildings spring up. One thing probably not really apparent from the air is how those Lanes between Patrick Street and Paul Street which were really sketchy back in the 80s are now Chi-chi in the extreme although admittedly that was a process that had begun before I'd even moved away . one thing noticeable, even from the air is how a lot of the road markings that hadn't survived the 80s recession , the yellow box junctions etc have quite clearly been reinstated . in fact such was the deterioration of the road markings in the 1980s that my mother used this as a way of dodging a parking fine by taking pictures of the (non-existent) double yellow lines !
Anyway enjoyed this video very much , it's almost cinematic. Thanks for posting .

I admire you for doing the courses, paperwork and getting the qualifications needed for being a professional drone pilot in Ireland (not as easy as some people think), and even being interviewed on TV3 news recently about the need for being a responsible drone pilot and I salute you for that!
Also, these are some of the most stunning images of Cork city where I (as an exiled Swansea Welshman) now live. I remember seeing the full length, unedited version for the first time after hearing you being interviewed on Red FM and being blown away, that someone who had only recently started flying drones as a hobby could get such stunning footage.

By the time the developers are finished Cork will be a big glass box.
When someone watches and listens to a video like this, it is very likely that he sees and hears ART and thinks not of UAV's or drones. Even back in the free-flight days of model plane flying when small planes like a SIG Cadet would do a "fly-away" and a pilot would report it and the press would freak. So, enjoy your flying and you art ... and keep quiet about it.

Its "Nocturne". It was the Norwegian Eurovision entry in 1990s not sure which year. I think the singer is Irish though.

Thanks Craig! I didn't get permission...at the time I made the flight I was unaware of the rules & regs (I simply bought the UAV and flew it)...I got into heaps of trouble over the original video but I went on to pursue and get my aerial works permission.
Thanks for the response Raymond. I done the same thing, got lots of city footage from flights in Glasgow and Edinburgh before I knew there were restrictions and will never upload most of the stuff. I am currently in the process of gaining permission through EuroUsc. Your videos of Old Head are spectacular. How far and high did you fly for some of that footage, I would have been a nervous wreck down them cliffs. That golf course is on my to do list. Have you uploaded anything to SkyPixel? If not worth having a look.
Craig Matheson For the Old Head, if I recall correctly was ~300m out and 300ft vertical. Likewise with the city shots... it's scary now to think how easily things could have gone wrong. I haven't been on SkyPixel but I'll take a look, cheers for that man.. and the very best of luck with your permission application :]
Thanks very much. I had a problem a few weeks ago where my transmitter antenna came loose and got caught in the props 50 metres above marshland!! Makes me think twice now about where and when to fly. Was just really lucky it was a practise flight out in the wilderness and a vital lesson to fasten everything and double check before takeoff.
