  • First of all, do not take for granted turnover. You will know so many things on it.
When you join the ship, especially full crew ship, bring with you notebook and marker. With these, you will take note what the outgoing cadet is telling you and you put mark on tanks, sounding pipes and even valves so that you remember where are these things.
My tip is, know right away where to take the reading of engine room temperature and sea water temperature. You never know when will the Chief Engineer ask you to get the temperature of these two.
Know where each machineries located. Know where are the flowmeters of main engine fuel oil, generator flowmeter, boiler flometer and cylinder oil flowmeter if there are flowmeters in the ship.
Know wherethe sounding pipe of bilge tank, waste oil tank, etc.
The tools, know where are they so that when you will be asked to get one, you know where is it.
Engine cadey must know the normal temperature and pressure of machineties in engine room.
