Just want to let you know how much I appreciate your content, man. I believe you and I ran into each other on the Clackamas about two or three years ago and chatted near the boat dock while you were setting up. It was a really cool experience for me because I had been out of the game for almost a decade but you were super friendly and reminded me why I love this community so much. I live in Texas now and I miss fishing cold water, but I get my fix from watching your videos. And at the very least, we get catfish that fight like bastards.
Monkey faced eel and poke poling is my favorite method of fishing. On your first catch you learned rule #1 net the fish first! .. or wait for it to fall in rocks and get away when they unhook themselves. I carry a small towel in hip to grab them as are slimy critters. Heck if fish want hook can keep it I'll get it back when cleaning-lol Pole wise those green garden stakes as thick as your thumb work well and 8ft'r is best with good 12 -18inches of wire. Bait clams are goodm. as I buy my bait I use squid in long strips precut in a zip lock. Glad you had fun!
Lol ya they are so slimy and squirmy!!! Net, bucket, and/or a towel are definitely necessary. That is definitely a fun way to fish. The garden stake sounds like a good idea. I’ve actually got a few already. They sell bamboo down the road from my place, so I was thinking about getting a few good pieces and making a couple poke poles from them. I can’t wait to go do this again! Thanks for the feedback. Good luck out there
Thanks for the video Nick. I've always wondered about the poke pole thing... now I know. Last time I made the trip on foot to the south Jetty was 40 years ago. Been thinking about it again but on an electric fat tire bike. Too far of a walk for busted up knees these days. Stay safe... will be looking forward to the next one.
Nice! I go to Barview Jetty and poke for monkey face eels all the time on my channel. They make great fish tacos. We’ll have to a catch and cook monkey feels next time. Great video and keep up the great work.
Always take extra socks! From the spit parking area, you can ride a bike up the road on the bay side, or walk out/back on that road, make a circle. One of my favorite spots!
It was totally calm and peak low tide. I was surprised to hear the commotion and look up to see that boat taking on water. Looks to me like when the guys was pulling up his crab pot, the boat leaned enough that his wife either fell out of her seat to where he was which out that side under water. Guy got back in, the lady was on the other side of the boat holding on to the boat with one hand and a life jacket in the other. I just picked up a 12’ pedal drive kayak, can’t wait to do some fishing in the bays!
I poke pole the Humboldt Bay jetties, I go on an incoming higher tide, that way I am climbing around on clean dry rocks and have huge pools instead of little pockets, slippery wet rocks and accidents waiting to happen. Good luck! If interested I will send you a couple of Rod Buster Fishing Academy Poke Pole tips, simply install on a bamboo rod available at any nursery for about $6
Thought it was funny you called it a peninsula, we’ve always called it the bay ocean spit. That’s a five mile walk one way and in the sand it’s brutal. Next time take a bike down the gated road on the right side of the parking lot. Cape Mears lake is right next to it and is being stocked with rainbows. Take your kayak out and catch a limit in less than two hours. Late September they put trophy sized fish in. Keep up the awesome videos.
Was born and raised in tillamook fishing those jetties and barview area my entire life. I'm 53 years old now and I have never heard of nor ever seen this technique before. Very interesting and would love to try it sometime.. BTW, how was the eel??
I fish the pacific rocks and poke poling is the way of primitive fishing yet very effective in low tides ...its a blast to catch different species...keeper movin 😎
Definitely need to try poke poling, used to catch sculpin, greenling and rock bass around the rocks when I was a kid, That beach is super long, lots of history there, but small perch for whatever reason. Great video as always Nick!
I caught a wolf eel totally by accident years ago on the south jetty in Newport. Eels are wicked cool. I just ended up cutting my hook off so I didn't have to touch it. I had no idea how to handle it LOL! Nice video... Everytime I'm out I keep an eye out for a red Armada. Cheers Brother!
Hi Nick, been doing any spring Chinook , summer steelhead fishing there seems to be more summers in Portland rivers than I've seen in past few years , not to many springs yet but any time now, always love your videos.
Definitely trying the hole poking. I never heard of that. I have went on many of those kinda hikes. They were always enjoyable. Most are a 1time deal. I accomplished my goal. Never regretted any. Other than the blisters.
Most of the eels you get poking that spot are called prickle backs. Remember they count as part of your 5 rockfish limit as well. They are considered rock fish.
I have never heard of poke poling! I hope you let us know how you like eating it. Was that Monday the 2nd? I was there and saw the helicopter. I hoped whoever it was was ok. I wasn’t there long. Headed down to siletz and Newport, just doing the tourist thing….
Nice video! First time I've seen someone use clam...I usually use squid and for my pole is a 20' Shakespeare wonderpole(replaced tip piece with a steel rod).
I never have luck at Barview it kinda sucks unless you got shrimp at low tide it used to be really good caught the salmon on my profile pic might have to try poke poking
I always feel like such a jerk when I see another comment and I haven’t called you yet. I need to sit still for more than two minutes… These two were crabbing… best way to sum it up, WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION! Looks like the guy was pulling up a crab pot and the boat leaned enough that the lady with him (assuming his wife) slid out of her seat to where he was. When I first turned on the camera you could see the nose way up in the air. He was able to get back in. She was holding onto the boat with one hand and a life jacket in the other. You don’t see her in the video after she went in. The are lucky it was slack tide.
@@AnglingAddictsPNW No problem. I understand that you're busy. I'm in San Diego right now. I was wondering about the tide. They get a pretty strong outflow there. They were very fortunate. Thanks for the reply.
Try using a shorter and heavier leader. The heavy line tends to stay straight into holes and is more durable when banging it on rocks. A shorter leader helps you pinpoint where you put the bait. Live bait hooks are the norm in the sf bay area. They are a heavier gauge and won't break easily. Some people just attach a hook by a snap swivel, no line at all. Trust me, the fish don't care.
Hey Nick, I will be at Rockaway Beach on 7/4-7/8 and wondering if you could take me out fishing. I am from Holland Michigan vacationing but love to fish.
The highlight of this video is you telling the seagull "SHUUUTT UUPP" . 🤣🤣 . As always, thanks for the entertaining video. How are you going to prepare the eel?
For the first time out that was a blast! The taste is hard to describe since I can’t think of something to really associate it with. It was pretty good though
It is. I’ve tried a ton of different bags for my gear and this one is my favorite so far. I just recently picked it up so it hasn’t had a lot of use yet. I’m rough on my gear so I should know pretty quick whether it’s durable or not lol
Thank you for the info. I figured my setup would have me pretty limited. Considering I threw it together the night before, I was happy to find some fish. I’d definitely like to try a bamboo pole. I will have to see what I can find. Thanks again
That was a $15 dollar rod that I thought would potentially get used for bass fishing but I couldn't stand that rod, it was put to better use being used as a poke pole. I'd never do that with a quality rod. This was the quickest and cheapest option at the time and it did the job. I wouldn't mind actually building a poke pole from bamboo though.
Just Subscribed, Im in Oregon too. Thought I was subscribed already , now I am . I enjoy watching your Fishin trips. Nice work!

"Probably one of the dumbest things I've decided to do in quite some time..." classic! Best stories I have begin or end with that. Be safe.

That is a nice bike ride and\or walk. I've done it a few times now. It's a pretty amazing place! Beautiful and full of life
Great adventure Nick!
Hard to believe a boat sank in such calm waters. Just last weekend I was on a 10 foot kayak in 8 to 10 foot swells in Cresent city.
It was totally calm and peak low tide. I was surprised to hear the commotion and look up to see that boat taking on water. Looks to me like when the guys was pulling up his crab pot, the boat leaned enough that his wife either fell out of her seat to where he was which out that side under water. Bay ocean peninsula jetty. Long walk but very enjoyable fishing. Thats where I caught my first keeper ling cod

Good adventure; thank you for the inspiration! 👍
Thanks for a great video. Can be dangerous on those rocks , you need to take a fishing buddy with you.
Thanks for sharing your adventure Nick.
A couple of firsts for me. Poke poling and Monkey Face Eel. I'm going to try that poke poling. We have much of the same kind of shoreline as you do.
I like your style man, gotta rig up a poke pole now.

Most of the eels you get poking that spot are called prickle backs. Remember they count as part of your 5 rockfish limit as well. They are considered rock fish.
I’ll have to try it next time I go down there…. thanks for the video!
Great content! Thank you.
Great video.... looks like a lot of fun

Have you ever fished the north spit jetty in north bend Oregon
Bro!! With the Chinook numbers being so high I'm surprised you aren't doing more salmon fishing.
I have seen those monkey faced eel videos too and wondered if we had them here
I appreciate the shut up to the damn gulls! I believe we've all been there before!
I never have luck at Barview it kinda sucks unless you got shrimp at low tide it used to be really good caught the salmon on my profile pic might have to try poke poking
Paul walker lives! Like your vid’s man
I still want to try that walk to the south jetty Ive heard it’s a mission. Thanks for confirming 😂 at least I know what I’m in for.
Great video, Nick! Do you have any idea why the boat went down? I'd like to avoid making that same mistake.
I always feel like such a jerk when I see another comment and I haven’t called you yet. I need to sit still for more than two minutes…

Love all your videos, Nick.
Thank you, I appreciate the continued support
If you’re hunting for skunk and don’t catch any what do you call that? I got “fished”?

Let us no how those eels taste? Great video 👍😬
Great Video! Looking forward to your comments on Monkey Face Eel for dinner : D
Hey Nick, I will be at Rockaway Beach on 7/4-7/8 and wondering if you could take me out fishing. I am from Holland Michigan vacationing but love to fish.
Can I ask which part of Barview jetty is this when you were fishing for eel?
The highlight of this video is you telling the seagull "SHUUUTT UUPP" . 🤣🤣 . As always, thanks for the entertaining video. How are you going to prepare the eel?
WTF! Nick, I never even heard of a Monkey-faced Eel. 😱 #FishFinAddicts
Do you ever use live bait for lings off the jetty?
Those are so good to eat
When I was a kid I used to do this with a bamboo cane pole...
That poke pulling looks simple and fun, how was the eel?
For the first time out that was a blast! The taste is hard to describe since I can’t think of something to really associate it with. It was pretty good though
Hey. I’d really like to hook up with you one of these days. I love your videos and I love what you are doing!
That will be my nightmare ( boat sinking) glad end it ok. It was a long day for you , but , as you know , all worth it. Cheers
“Shutttt upppp!” 🤣
Do they have big teeth like other eels?
Is your pack from Fishlab? Has it been tough enough for jetty fishing?
It is. I’ve tried a ton of different bags for my gear and this one is my favorite so far. I just recently picked it up so it hasn’t had a lot of use yet. I’m rough on my gear so I should know pretty quick whether it’s durable or not lol
Hey if you're down to go fishing hit me up! I can head up to Barview but usually I hit newport/winchester and the north jetty at coos bay/north bend.
You can try using a thick bamboo pole, it is stronger. Your setup would be difficult to catch the big one, some of those could get over 4 pounds.
Thank you for the info. I figured my setup would have me pretty limited. Considering I threw it together the night before, I was happy to find some fish. I’d definitely like to try a bamboo pole. I will have to see what I can find. Thanks again
Weww! Great video
Thank you, it was fun to try something new…and be successful!
Since you are releasing most of fish pinch the barb, make an easier job of hook removal.
👍
A 10' bamboo pole
👍👍👍
Please give me a ring, I am looking for an excuse to hit the rocks with my new knee. Hermiston Ranch and Home fishing department.
scotchbloom everywhere.. invasive plant..
I cringed every time you put the fishing pole into the rocks. Just use a cut willow or even a piece of PVC. But dont use a good spinning rod.
That was a $15 dollar rod that I thought would potentially get used for bass fishing but I couldn't stand that rod, it was put to better use being used as a poke pole.
