I had originally played it on the board game and it was an earlier edition (board was a bit different). I have to say this is a better balanced version for sure.
its also better to buy transport early as japan, even if you keep the first 2. you want 4 TP asap to carry 8 troops. on turn 2 or 3 you can buy the IC so you can build more than 8 units. first turn buy as japan if you still have the original 2 transports: 2 transport + 2 infantry + 1 fighter and if japan lost original transport i like 3 transports and 3 infantry you could also try to not attack pearl harbour and focus positionnal defense in the pacific but you seem to be very lucky with pearl harbour most of the time. i just dont like the risk vs the reward there.
It's kinda disingenuous for you to lambast online battle calculators while using the in-game calculator. You often make your decisions based off what the calculator says is a good attack and at that point you're not "doing it yourself", you're using the assistance of a calculator. It's then only a difference of degrees, not kind.
"Lambast" is definitely a bit strong of language I think, I just have my opinion. That being said lets break it down. :) I see A&A as a version of Chess myself, and I'd ask the question, playing Chess is it with the common rules to pull out an AI calculator and make decisions based upon what your calculator tells you? "But this is A&A, NOT Chess." Okay, there definitely ARE official tournaments of A&A. I know this from @BoardGameNation s channel as he's played in the finals. The simple question is, "Are online calculators allowed in those official tournaments?". If the answer is "yes" to either of those questions, I clearly cede the point.
