I've got one of these on the way. Planning to use it with a Sony mirrorless, as well as a guide scope. FYI, the Starizone EVO-FF field flattener is supposed to work with this and has a backfocus of 55mm. Might be worth looking into.

I love my little evoguide. Just ordered the field flatterner for it. I plan to order another so I can use one as a guide scope and one as an image. And they look beautiful on skywatchers evostar 100 pro-ed 😁

I was able to get good imaging of Triangulum. It makes a fun outreach EAA with ASI174. Also works well with v2. Starizona FF, which has 55mm backfocus. The FF from SW in your review might be the shorter backfocus? Gives good results with ASI533MC and 2600MC!

    Hi Ed!
I have the new 62 Evolux (which you should definitely review) as the finder for my F/9 100ED which has magnificent optics so i HIGHLY appreciated your astrophotos using the 100ED reducer (awesome stuff BTW !!)
Having no vignetting or loss of sharpness justifies its high price here in Canada (now at 500$ !!!)
    Great channel and longtime sub.
    Thanks for your efforts !!
P.s. the evolux has zero ZERO chromatic errors even out of focus !! Wow !!

Hello Mr. Ting. First off thank you so very much for the in depth knowledge that you so readily teach is in such a wonderfully positively expressive explanation. I have some nerdy style engineering questions to ask you. Would you mind answering some of these odd ball thoughts of optics I have?

Thanks for the great review on the field flattener for the Evo*100 ED. You didn’t mention any chromatic aberration and I was wondering if you noticed any because it is a doublet with ED glass. Thanks and I love your reviews! No more telescopes!

This is great, Ed- I was thinking about putting an ASI294 on one of these and running it on a Skyguider as a second rig. I think I might snag it.

Love your emergency finder Ed. I have an 8” Dobsonian and a 6” Maksutov and I’m now looking at getting myself a refractor. I am looking at the Skywatcher range of both the Evoguide and ED ranges. I love the Esprits, but they’re just a tad too expensive. Decisions, decisions 🤔

I had to pull out my EvoStar 100 a couple times, yours looks bigger than I recall. :^) Still looks bigger. I have the Moonlite focuser on mine (long story) and that works out quite nicely.

Hi Ed I just started sky gazing and I am considering buying a pair of binoculars. I'm thinking about the Beta optics 144x military binoculars and is seeking your advice. I found a pair for sale for 50$ and is in good condition. The market price for this is almost 200$. I'm seeking your advice. Thanks!

Thanks for a very informative video, Ed! I'd like to know how'd you find the view or images through the ED80 using the 100mm scope field flattener? Did it work fine on both scopes? Again, thank you!

My problem with the Skywatcher field flattener is there was no way to add a filter, had to order a special adapter from First Light Optics, UK.

I have the Evoguide. IMO it's not very practical for anything outside of being a somewhat overkill guidescope. I tried various configurations including with a 1600MC pro on the back and I got significant vignetting with the FF in place. I'd hoped to be able to use it with DSLR and Star Adventurer for a nice little travel imaging setup but ultimately you're still looking at getting a Redcat or similar for such things. As it stands. mine lives permanently (with FF) on top of my main imaging rig with nothing more than a 120MM mini in the back of it. Damn good guiding data coming in though, it really does beat the snot out of the converted cheap 9x50 finder I was using before. Overall, If you want a bloody nice guide scope or a handy little visual scope then it's for you. If you want a small cheap imaging scope I'd look elsewhere.

What about visual experience? I'm thinking to get it as a my first telescope for visual and have it as a guide scope in the future, basically shooting two bunnies wih one shot. I have binoculars right now and planning to "upgrade" it to this as it enables me to have magnification I want to.

I’m a total astrophotographer numpty. After reviewing the specs on the SW ED50 I did my numpty maths and thought this scope would probably make a good (cheap) beginner scope before seeing this great video and other videos and articles. I bought the SW flattener and then after reading articles their isn’t enough focal length for a DLSR camera also bought the Starizona FF offering…haven’t had skies to try anything. Pondering if the flattener and ED50 could be used successfully with DLSR if a extension tube kit is used like one of the 1.25 inch SVBONY kits that have tubes of different lengths? Or am I being naive?

My 2 cents..... I think this is also a great 1 st Refractor !!!! My first scope is Nexstar 8 SCT..... the Evostar is my 1 st Refractor of quality.... Great contrast, pinpoint stars .... I use mines with The FF.... as a straight thru scope views are pleasing with a Celestron 32 plossi.... cannot use a Barlow cuz FF is too close.... I also use with a Zwo 178MC non cool color for imaging....I’m a newbie so still learning..... I’m awaiting guiding gear so I can’t speak on that yet....
The views are so pleasing I went ahead and got the Evostar 100 as well .... !! Of course no clears skies for a few....
As a multi use scope the Evoguide is all that IMO...!!
Great Vid Mr Ting. Can u make a Vid on all the different mounts and plates ( vixen, losmandy, arca Swiss )

The Evoguide 50ED might be a fine choice for taking images of the entire solar or lunar disc with cameras equipped with a 1/3" sensor. Imagine EAA or public observations.

Short discreption. I'm 35 at the moment..
Since i was a kid i love the planets stars ect... but I could only afford books. So i read a lot off them. At my 20tees i still read the books and bought a lot off dvds. Carl Sagan, discovery, and so on... but still, no money for a telescope. At around 28 years I bought my first one in a play store... couldn't really see anything with it... so it gathered dust... and eventually broke from not using it. Few months ago, I bought another one(70€), somewhere around August (because off you, astrobiscit, astrobackyard, and a little girl called Helena..) and then, clear sky's in 🇧🇪 belgium so I looked trough the scope (jupiter, saturn where all visible)
OMG, I saw jupiter and his 3 moons, saturn, even though it was a cheap scope you could tell there were rings round saturn. I'm hook Since that moment. Just bought my first real scope now astromaster 130eq. I cant wait for clear sky's now. Thx you and the others for the amazing content! Really! Grtz from belgium.

Another good review Ed, I will save my money and not buy the Evoguide 50. Looks pretty but fairly useless for anything but guiding

  • @ultrametric9317
    @ultrametric9317 3 роки тому

The problem is that all these devices use basically a cemented cheap binocular objective. It's just not very good optically, so all that visual/photo stuff is moot. You'd need an anastigmat lens, like on an old bellows camera or even a slide projector or enlarger. I have thought about adapting a slide projector lens for use with mine. As a guider none of that matters, but in that case the high-brow focuser is sort of overkill, and the heavy weight is a demerit, so the end result is neither here nor there. But, it is a fun toy! I can use a diagonal if I throw in a 2x barlow.

technically Field Flatteners are magnifying glass reversed . So if we imagine burning Ants with magnifying glass , the way it works is that in a telescope you look from Ants perspective , from the other way. Now image scale is reduced because its reversed , it takes image from the telescope and fits it on an Ant , makes it smaller , kind of a speed booster so more of it fits on your sensor , hence when you look at the image you have bigger angle , or its zoomed out . Not zoomed in .
It makes exactly the opposite optical Error , in essence fixing your problem , but its not a true purpose made corrective lens , its DIY thing .You can make it your self but without Corrective Coatings on it . That part is hard to do DIY
Now obviously that 100ED flattener is 1.1X , it actually zooms you in a bit and Crops the image helping it self a bit , i have an ED80 one that is 0,84X , that one gives you more image , also corrects it good without lost field .ITs advantage is that it gives a bit of boost .
So it can go both ways , but i guess true field flattener would be 1X, or 0 angle change . Those are made as well .
So basically it can go ether way , i think i prefer slight Boost .

Thank you for the review, Ed! Love the channel and was waiting for this since your Evostar 100ED scope review video.
I'm still debating if I should get this flattener/reducer or something else because of budget. The focal reduction aspect is more important to me than the field flattening. Do you have any words of advice/caution if I go for either of these:
    www.astro-physics.com/ccdt67
    www.astronomics.com/astro-tech-0-8x-reducer-field-flattener-for-f-6-refractors.html
I'm aware that the Astro-Tech product here is only advised for f/5.5 - 7, but curious what might happen if I tried it. Is your Astro-Tech flattener also a focal reducer?
