This video is about the WGU Computer Science Bachelors Degree.
Computer science is one of the best majors (if not the best) that you can take if you want to set yourself up for success. But in order to get a computer science degree, you have to go to college... And college is very expensive and time consuming... Until now
Western Governors University offers a CS degree that you can easily get in less than 2 years (and in many cases much less than this). This is something that in many cases I have recommended to my consulting clients and those who have bought my paid products, but for the first time I'm starting to talk about it on this channel because it has gotten such amazing results that I really want to share it with the world and help as many people as possible.
These methods involve using study.com, straighterline.com, or sophia.org in order to test out of classes or take college credits externally (much faster and at a better price) before you start at WGU. Study.com, straighterline, and sophia are all good, but study.com in my (and others that have extensive experience degree hacking) opinion is the best. It has the most options, the best and fastest classes, and the least friction to transfer credits in.
Getting a WGU Computer Science accelerated degree is very easily done in less than 2 years of overall work, and in extreme cases it can be done in less than 6 months. And a WGU Computer Science degree is a respected degree, people who get it have amazing things to say about it and typically get job placement very quickly. My friend Josh Madakor for instance immediately got an offer from a FAANG company after getting his CS degree in 2 months.
Enjoy :)

Awesome resource! Any plans to make these for Masters degrees at WGU as well? I'm trying to pivot out of industrial engineering into data science and would love to know if/how the approach you give for computer science bachelor's degrees could be used for the data analytics MS at WGU as well.
Thanks Shane! So helpful 🙏🏻
Second time trying to respond to this comment lol... what is wrong with the youtube commenting system... Anyways: If there are enough requests I will make a video for all of the WGU degrees or at least the ones that are requested a lot!
@@ShaneHummus I saw earlier in your video the list of programs that have a spreadsheet, could I see the one for B.S. of Information Technology? I really enjoyed the video but I prefer IT over Computer Science. Thanks for sharing this hidden Gem!
@@ShaneHummus if you do end up making another sheet, please do one on Accounting and Business Admin.. I know ur thoughts on Business Admin but I am already getting a more specific degree and think a general Business degree would be easy and wouldn't hurt.
WGU is great for people who want a 100% online Comp sci bachelors degree (very few universities are 100% online) and also for people who want to work at their own pace. 6 months is EXTREMELY aggressive. As Shane mentioned, you're going to have to pregame. A lot. If you're starting from scratch, it's going to take years. I cannot recommend community college enough, get all of your gen ed out of the way through comm colleges, and most offer the gen ed courses online. ALSO, computer science degree != programming efficacy. It takes many, many, many months to become a good programmer, in most cases it takes years. No matter the route you take, IT'S SO WORTH IT in the end. Happy coding.
@@shyjy6241 Hey man. Honestly those are both incredible fields to get into, and they overlap in a lot of ways, meaning you can get similar jobs with either EE or CS degree. One thing would be do you prefer hardware and building tangible things, or do you prefer software like writing code. I think you can’t go wrong with either one, so do the one you could see yourself doing for many years to come :)
Shane you’ve saved so many people so much time and money. Thank you for what you do! Especially with this spreadsheet. Can only imagine how many hours it took to make that
I aim to please :)
Omg UA-cam pruned my comment. I was just saying CS degree and getting into dev was the best choice I ever made in my career. More cushy, more comfy, more coins. Kinda steep learning curve, but totally worth it. And thanks Shane for featuring me ^^
How did I guess you would be here? 😅😂
Why is UA-cam doing this to my comments ugh. They let the fake spam comments through though 😩
You made this move at 36/37? I'm in this position now (same age), came from a decade in analytics but am now unemployed with lots of time to do another degree.

@@tracy_cakkes thank you so much!
WGU is a fantastic school! Currently enrolled and about to graduate with a BS in Information Technology Management. The school is legit and the coursework is the same as any university. They are regionally accredited and 100% legit. As someone who thought the opportunity cost of college was not worth it, WGU is a life saver.
Are you 100% sure about that?
Glad you’re enjoying it!
@@Zaidi_227 Yes!
Can you do an update on job opportunities?
@@rrochs can you updated
Just a heads up for those interested, WGU uses a pass/fail system meaning that they do not calculate your GPA(your GPA will always be 3.0), this could be a turn off for those interested in pursuing a M.S. in a competitive Uni, but if you don't mind I'd say go for it.
Maybe, your GPA is always a 2.0 from the schools that I know that see a P/F. Some schools may weigh a P/F differently, so keep in mind of this if you apply for an MS.
Also, many employers I know of don't consider WGU credible since it's a purely online school. For a lot of online degrees to be credible, you may have to take an online program from an actual State University.
@@trevorscott3275 WGU is 100% credible, and the employers saying otherwise are ignorant of the direction higher education is going. As a matter of fact, Georgia Tech frequently accepts WGU grads into their Online MS in Computer Science (OMSCS) degree. You get to save a ton of money and time and then turn around and complete a master’s degree if you choose that's ranked top ten in the country. Otherwise, start the job hunt without any degree setbacks.
@@ltshellshock4168 Admittance to a master's program, an online one nonetheless, is leagues easier than getting into Georgia Tech as an undergrad. Most unis will take you as long as you can pay for it. I have to question the rigor of a CS program that can be completed in
Great point Miku. I know the traditional education institutions hate WGU because they are simply providing a better service for students at a much lower cost (which makes them look bad), so of course some of them aren't going to accept WGU. With that being said, Georgia Tech has a top 10 CS Masters degree program and accepts WGU grads. University Of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is a top 15 public school and accepts WGU grads regularly. There are many more examples of options and routes you can go if you're a WGU grad.
...And to be honest, there are really only a few situations where getting a masters at one of these elite schools is really going to help you that much. I've done videos on the statistics behind this and students that get into elite schools, but choose to go to other schools end up making just as much money as those who get into elite schools and choose to go to those schools (at a fraction of the price). So going to an elite school is highly overrated, sure there are a few circumstances where it may help you because of the signaling/status of achieving an elite school, but overall it doesn't seem to make much of a difference to the average person (except that it costs you more)
Trevor, WGU is extremely credible. For instance, Josh went to WGU and then immediately got an offer from a FAANG company right afterwards. I've worked with many people that have had similar results. WGU and their grads have a great reputation, especially in the Tech world. Not sure where you're getting this info from
I'm in Comp Sci at WGU, started 6/1 with 15% done from my old university. Today I am 32% done, as I completed 21 credits, 8 of which are Discreet Math 1 and 2. The latter class is the hardest in the degree allegedly. You guys got this!
You're well on your way!
I'm considering this degree path. Do you still like it?

Not sure what keeps happening to my comments, but I’m currently studying accounting at WGU and I love it. I’ve completed 5 classes in 2 months which isn’t a lot compared to a lot of people but it’s what I’m able to do while working full time with 3 kids. I don’t have accounting experience so I’m taking my time in the actual accounting courses but accelerating everything else. Study and Sophia only transfer to select schools so I chose to just do all courses at WGU. My local university accepts WGU degrees and I plan on doing my masters at my local university
How long would masters take ? if u transferred after ur bachelors and go to ur local university or state ?
@@TheErik1119 people complete their masters at WGU usually in 1 term from what I have seen. The masters is only 10 courses vs 40 course for the bachelors. I’m planning on using my WGU undergrad degree to get into a university for masters. I heard masters is very intense and there’s a lot more support I feel like at the local university especially for the CPA exam prep
The masters at a university usually takes about a year from what I have heard
You got this 💪

Hello hope all is well I start August the 1st Im super excited I just turned 30 and decided to finish my degree. I enrolled into the accelerated I.T degree which is giving me my B.S and M.S. at the end of the course. This video is super helpful I was able to bring over 46 credits with a remainder of 76 credits left. I'm fairly confident I can finish this in 6 months. I hope everyone takes this information seriously WGU is a game changer!
How it's going now?
@@demacianpolice507 not bad had a death in the family and it slowed the process a bit but I'm 51% of the way done, Its really just the Comptia certs that are time consuming to study for. everything else is easily attainable through the course work it's self.

Hey Shane. A very interesting idea you've presented in this video. I'm currently about to start my second year of community college, and I plan to transfer somewhere (not 100% sure yet) to get a CS degree. Needless to say, your videos have given me a lot of confidence about my major choice😁
I've recently started looking at online colleges since they tend to be cheaper than other colleges (no room & board) and I will definitely be looking into WGU.
Let me know how it goes!
Transfer to a bigger college?
Appreciate all the work you put into this and for sharing this with us! Can’t wait to graduate with a computer science degree! 😊
My pleasure! You got this!
Please note that this degree is not doable in 6 months if you're brand new to tech. Josh Madakor had years of experience and a previous I.T. degree.
Yeah it's hard. You can't do the WHOLE PROCESS in 6 months, but if you transfer and pre-study, the "leftovers" are definitely doable in 6 months :). You'll be relatively strong by the time you actually enroll at WGU. 💪
@@JoshMadakor Hi, would you share what extra material, if any, you used for discrete math studies?
@@marib9907 it’s on his channel already
Thanks A Million for the google spreadsheet! Amazingly helpful!
this was very useful, i graduated with my AA degree 6 year ago, so I'm hoping i can transfer a majority of classes. and i didnt know i could pre game some of those classes. very useful information.
I transferred in all gen eds through my AA. I have 32% complete but that's because I took a couple other courses previously like calc andna couple programming classes. I think if I just had the AA then it would maybe be 25%. But also if your AA includes classes outside the gen eds then you will be above 25%
One thing, to get accepted into an it program you MUST have either: an it certification or 2 years experience in the field. You can also go to the WGU academy which essentially is precollege classes to get you accepted if you are missing prerequisites. That's what the counselor told me when I was applying for an it program.
That's true for most IT but for computer science you need pre calc or calculus 1 which you can do at straighterline and transfer it over to WGU.
If you have an AA, AAS, or bachelor and above that is waived
Great point Thunder, this is why I would highly recommend that you pregame the certs. If I get enough requests I'll do a video on the IT program as well.
Not true, for compsci you just need calc
@@Astrosive they accept that credit?
Ohh woow that’s amazing, I really appreciate that man, god bless you
Wow, pre gaming is looks very interesting. But, I already enrolled to WGU. Anyway I can put a lot of time and try to pass quickly as I can. Thanks for information.
i have a 6 month tuition reimbursement from my job at amazon warehouse and starting WGU on 3/1/23 hopefully im working as a SWE in 2024
congratulations.
Wait Amazon pays for your college?
How Did it go?? Update!
Thank you for all the hard work and gems.
Great video, Shane! Subbed.
Wow. That's amazing and pretty valuable. Thanks, bro.😊👍
Glad you liked it!
I kinda see it as just a nice thing to have, you can do whatever you want to do, and in your resume it says Bachelor of CS, which gives you the opening to get some weird respect from HR here or there, like do IT get CompTIA certs and have this degree in your CV so you won't get autofiltered out by AI programs or human recruiters who are adamant about IT people having a BS in CS for some reason. Or mix a CS degree with a prestigious Law degree and do niche forms of law like scientific stuff or tech law, maybe AI law. Heck, just from having Calculus I you could get a lot of respect and possibly get into say like Goldman Sachs and do Financial modeling if you have the other resume cookies.
They do two six month terms instead of semesters and if you finish all the courses you took in a term, if you have time you can take more. Whether you take 1 class or 30 classes its the same like $4000 per term.
I managed to finish a huge portion of my associates with SNHU with Sophia classes, I finished an associates of arts in like six months. I'm working on a bachelors of CS but I kind of want to try this for the rest lol
So sad that WGU does not accept students outside the US except from Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Awesome video! Could you do this with the other majors? Specifically the Data Management/Analytics degree. Also, does this process work with the Masters degree programs?
Awesome video! Looks like there is a Data Management/Data Analytics Degree offered at WGU. Can you compare the Comp Sci against that degree? I am looking into a Data Analyst path but that specific degree isn't offered at a lot of other schools.
Do SNHU instead. They're fully online but they also have a brick and mortar school in New England.
SNHU is great too
But very pricey. I guess you left that out.
@@StillTheVoid it's slightly more than WGU
Be ready to work relentlessly and you can finish in under a month.
Very good video and new information! I was getting worried because Shane has been just putting the same information in different videos. I thought about stop watching but this video gives me hope that he still has ideas for new material
So basically the way I make content is 1) Suggestions and 2) If I'm really passionately about a certain subject I will go on binges where I study and research that subject deeply for a short time. I'll be going over a lot of different forms of what I like to call "Alternative Education" over the next few months. Schools like WGU/Certifications/Bootcamps/Online Learning/Apprenticeships/Internships etc will be on the agenda over the next 3-6 months, so stay tuned!
@@ShaneHummus Good. I am very interested in alternative education and I’m sure many other people are as well
Just got admitted at WGU and even though I've studied at 4 different universities before WGU only 4 classes have been transferred. There transfer policy is not generous at all.
Id previously enrolled to WGUs program in Data Analytics but never got to pass my first course in intro of IT because there were ALOT of material that was not covered in the course and was a proctored exam. Never passed the course ended up quitting it because i kept failing it even after spending 50 hours studying.
Keep this in mind: as far as Tech Programs go in these majors, WGU does NOT have assignments or reports you can submit to make up for it...it is an EXAM ONLY environment and for some of us...its difficult to pass.
From my research, wgu is best for people that already have knowledge in the field. Like some one who has a few certs and has worked in the field for a few years. Those people can power thru the course material because they already know it.
@@lewtown Nah i dont think it was about that. Its just when you dont tell your students, hey...these computer courses you're taking: are just guidelines for the real thing and are not really the questions you'll see on the one and ONLY final test for the course.
I'm like: WHAT THE FUCK...Why havent I been told about this EARLIER before I enrolled?
This was in 2020. I'm not sure whats changed. It just the normal method of classes is so engraved in my brain, I can't seem to function my studies without it.
@@StillTheVoid I think it might have changed since 2020, saying this as a guy who literally just took that EXACT intro to IT course/test today. like a few hours ago, lol. Course material lined up fine, and for people like me, I'd prefer one single test any day (compared to multiple assignments).
I have heard that some courses don't line up incredibly well with the exam, but reddit is a good place to go and see. There are a ton of people on the reddit regularly posting about each class, giving advice on what to study, how well exams line up, etc.
Sorry about your experience though, that sucks. Seems like it's better now.
Sorry you had this experience with them. It doesn't seem to be the general feedback I hear from the many people I have worked with that went to WGU.
I highly recommend going the WGU subreddit if you ever try to take a shot at it again as they typically have really good strategies for how to pass the different classes.
@@ShaneHummus Nah, I tried that route. The thing is Intro to IT is very easy...what's not easy is that they expect and treat the final exams as if its the actual CompTIA. And I spend HOURS on end getting the material and studying it and still don't meet it.
I'm like fuck it...so I went to UoP...and what a surprise, was able to learn more by assignments and projects and aced my courses as I should have as a student.
Another thing that should've been in this vid is how all those courses you're taking is capable to be transferrable to another institution for your Masters or PhD whatever.
Will I try again? Probably not after what we learned how fragile and short life is and not be so reliable on our employers to throw us a bone for chump change.
Glad I have a backup plan. ;)
Thanks!

@@nycto16 lmao absolutely not. Saying CS is all about coding is like saying mechanical engineering is all about autoCAD. CS is a mathematical discipline and you can't even think of going into more advanced fields in CS without a proper mathematical background.
There are good arguments on both sides and it really depends on your goals. There are some positions that it is really tough to get into without a college degree. Some positions very easy to get into with bootcamp. It really depends on your skills/situation/goals etc.

I also have a very old (2004) outdated CCNA and official training in CCDA (didn't take that test). Can I transfer those out not?
I was an older student too. I went the traditional route for my degree, recently. The universities I went to said that math and science classes couldn't be no more than 7 years old. So I wasn't able to transfer just two of my classes over because I had completed them in year 2000. According to some universities (per Google search):
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) courses have a 10-year shelf-life. This is typically because advancements in the field evolves the understanding or practical methodologies used within them. A rule of thumb: If your STEM courses are older than 10 years, they may not transfer.
certs have a 5 year shelf life
Hi Shane, great cheatsheet. The back home button is not working tho. I want the network engineering and security cheatsheet.
Is this still updated?
Good info but it's worth noting that a 6 month term will cost you about $3,790 per their website. Plenty of other free and low cost resources available for coding so I think I'll continue down the self taught route.
That can be a great route for some. Less than 5% succeed with the self taught route but if you can do it, it’s great.

I'm interested in the Cloud Computing Path, but how do you get to that tab?
Hey Shane. I'm in my last year of High-school and I wanna study Economics, Business and Management Information Systems or so other useful tech course. Is this good or too much
Depends on your goals but management information systems is one of my favorite majors
@@ShaneHummus ok Well, my goal is to be an economist but also work for tech companies (eg gaming companies) so doesn't it mean I'll have to do all 3?
I wanna go to this school right out of high school for computer science but i dont know if i should

Can you make one of these for a business degree at wgu? Or just what classes you could test out of
How long is your promo code good for? Also do you have to pay for the 3 months up front or do you pay month by month for three months and it gives the discount each month until the fourth month?
I think you pay month to month and yeah good for 3 months. Should be good in perpetuity
@@ShaneHummus Cool thanks.
Thankyou sir
Does getting a WGU bachelor's degree hamper your chances if let's say you wanted to continue graduate school in a top school?
I’m interested in the “software development” degree. When I click the “back home” link on the excel sheet for computer science, it won’t take me back to view all the degrees. Can you please provide me with the software development excel spreadsheet? It would be much appreciated!
Will be doing that one in the near future!
5th time try, using the original account to see if my comments disappears only with this account or if it's filtered out by keywords.
I am studying in highschool. Can i get bachelors in computer science? How much time it will take and Can I go for Ms after completing it?
The link only shows the computer science degree program, it does not show the selection menu for the other degrees listed.
Yes, just computer science for this video.
Josh has a list of the other available degrees
