Halki is a small gem in the Dodecanese Island group, located close to the far busier Rhodes Island. Untouched by mass tourism, Halki is the perfect secret getaway for a relaxing vacation! It has a few amazing beaches and its main village has a unique charm. Chalki is an island with a low profile and an ancient history. It's been inhabited since the prehistoric times, and it got its name from the copper mines (Chalkos is Greek for copper) that were in use on the island in antiquity. The buildings bear the signs of prosperity the island knew during the second half of the 19th c., as trade growth and the sponge harvesting business brought wealth to the locals. After 1912, the Italians possessed the Dodecanese group of islands (Chalki included) until 1948 when they became part of the Greek State.

Fond memories of taking the ferry over from Rhodes and being the only tourist, except from a 80 year old travel writer, on the island. Such a lovely day just exploring and talking to the locals ❤
Catching some old memories from beautiful Greek islands, looking just perfect way for the end of the day :) Chalki still very peaceful I can only imagine how it looks perfect with only few other visitors.... I m looking to visit some more small islands in Dodecanese like Kastelorizzo hope they have similar vibe like Chalki...

I found this info about beautiful Town Hall: The town hall of the island, a typical white two-story building right next to the old clock. It was built at the highest point in the settlement in 1933 to house the boys' school, with money from former Halki residents who had moved to America. The building was constructed by one of the best folk craftsmen of the time, the Carpathian Yiannis Fanarakis. It is a typical example of folk architecture with neoclassical elements. The building served a variety of purposes. During the Turkish occupation it was the seat of the Council of Elders. Later it housed a girls' high school, and it has also been a medical office and pharmacy
