  • Another power steering component overhauled. Still need to do some work in the steering box (steering wheel column) steering control valve etc but for now system seems to be responding.

Man, that was an excellent idea to put the ziplock bag on the end of the lines and get all that old fluid out! I snapped off 1 of the fittings that goes into the left power steering cylinder on my 231 the other day while going through some brush. It’s about the 4th time I’ve done this! Easy fix though. Lost all the fluid, but was able to get it back on the trailer before I could no longer steer it.

Thank you for your comment. Even with you fluid you can still steer the tractor, just mechanical. I drove mine like that for a year. Now that I have the power steering working it feels so much better.

I'd be careful steering with that 1 finger. If it decides to suddenly lock up, you could break a finger. Great video. I think I am fixing to have to remove my uncle's power steering pump and check it out. His power steering quit working on his mf253.

Nice 231. Good video, Thanks. I run the engine when adding power steering fluid to my 245 , then cycling the steering back and forth to circulate the fluid through the system. Just changed the pump on mine today, and will replace the ram seals tomorrow.

@@BUTTEWORKSwould you notify me when you get video up on this please? I have to do the same thing on my MF240. I really enjoyed your video, I rebuilt my steering cylinders a while back, but still didn't have very good power steering, so I assume the filter is clogged. I have a leak somewhere where on the steering wheel shaft that constantly keeps the steering wheel shaft housing wet with fluid. I assume this is what you're going to be working on in the next video. It's been five months since you did this video, so you may already have made the video. I just subscribed also. Take care.

Glad it helped. Just so you know my pump uses the filter with no spring since the spring is built in the cover, unlike other pumps where the spring is built in on the filter. So buy the filter after you open it up to buy the right one.

There were 3 different power steering pumps used on the MF 231 during its production years, from 1989-1999. Mine is a 1998 model and my pump has been re-sealed once. It has around 1,600 hours on it. I’ve had it for 17 years and it’s been a damn good tractor! Had to have head gasket replaced once and that was about 4 years ago.

Hi, my pump didn't have any serial number and to be hones, it was quite different to the many I could find in internet. Specially the connection. None of the ones I saw online would fit the metal pipes that go into the pump. The would have modified or using adapters to make the angles match.

@@BUTTEWORKS that is a really good point.....they might not be drawing from the same pool of liquid based altho from some of my troubleshooting efforts, it acted as if the 2 reservoirs do share. i say this b/c i once had the tractor started w/ the steering reservoir's plug removed. each time i turned the wheel, some liquid would get pushed out of it but its level at the steering column wouldn't go down. i was missing a large qty from the pump reservoir after that experiment.
