    As Ariel Posen pointed out, B on baritone scales creates a more bass like sound and feel; don't really need to go quite this heavy, but having at least one guitar set up at C or B standard can vastly improve the repetoire.

  • @royalcat10
    @royalcat10 6 років тому +17

    You mentioned a few times of tuning it higher than B, but is that really even an option? As you probably know, a .17 gauge string is the typical B string you'd find in a common set of .13's. And tuning .13's any much higher than E standard, which acts in relativity as tuning a .17 past B, makes the plain strings very unstable and at a high risk of breaking for typical playing techniques. I would think somewhere around C# or D is the absolute highest you could push the string before it'd snap from a simple bend, if that. All just my conjecture, though

    • @Stringjoy
      @Stringjoy  6 років тому

      Great question! Yeah when I first strung it up I didn't really want to take it that high up, though the next day I put it up to open C# which worked just fine. I would imagine you could take it a bit higher, to D or D#, but at E it would get a little harry. It's do-able of course, but it wouldn't be a great idea...

    • @markferguson3745
      @markferguson3745 4 роки тому +1

      Def not a good idea at 017, period.

  • @mandrakeblackstone5838
    @mandrakeblackstone5838 3 роки тому +1

    I use 14's on my Les Paul , and tune it down one full step , On the SG , 11's one full step down ,, the Tele 11.5's Half step down , ES 11.5's Half step down , the warlock 10's Standard tuning . I wont use anything lower then a 10 , If wrote as song that requires 2 step down then I would use 16's , which would require a guitar suited for such a low tuning and heavy stings . This is important , always dedicate a guitar for each tuning setup and string gage , as the neck and body wont set properly and you would get warping and other stress related to irregular tension . It is also advisable if your going to tune in standard tuning , not use any gage above 11.5 and nothing below 10's .

    I've played 13-60, on a Collings OM, and a Rainsong jumbo, tuning the 6th from D all the way to B. I chased the nut slot for the 60 with a StewMac file, and lubed with graphite so it would pass thru easier. The Rainsong really sounded huge down to B.

    heaviest strings i have ever put on a guitar...and keep in mind this is a typical scale strat, not a bass...was a .135 to 20 something. yes i was downtuned to whale fart range. i believe drop D in the bass octave. so like 34 pounds. 40 on a guitar is insane and i definitely dont recommend it. the 135 i used bowed the neck slightly over time so yea, gauge doesnt matter but i would do some charts and keep tension under 30 to protect your neck, and be sure to tighten the truss rod if you go tighter. i'm fairly sure if you cranked the 17 set to standard E it would break the plain strings and maybe your first wound. there is a reason why 12 string guitars usually have thicker necks and dual truss rods.

    • @anthonyrc6618
      @anthonyrc6618 6 років тому

      What guitar was it? I'm just wondering how you could fit a 135 into the hole under the bridge and the one in the tuning peg

    Is this the gauge that some slide players use in standard sometimes as well? You said that in another comment and I was wondering if it was this set.

    • @Stringjoy
      @Stringjoy  6 років тому +1

      Most of our slide players use highly customized gauges to suit their individual needs, but many of them will start with .015-.017

    • @anthonyrc6618
      @anthonyrc6618 6 років тому

      NIce. It's awesome that some slide players go that high.

    • @markferguson3745
      @markferguson3745 4 роки тому

      With slide, I've actually found that heavier isn't necessarily better; especially with the action raised, standard 10/11 can make the heavier wound strings easier to voice, depending on the tuning.Try standard tension with the tuning first, go heavier if you have to.A lot of those myths are people either selling strings, or wanting you to believe there's some special magic/ knowledge.

  • @bradb9504
    @bradb9504 6 років тому

    How the heck is your intonation and your nut ok? I have an ec-1000 and i put 13-60 gauge strings to tone lower, keeping the tension about the same as 10s in standard. However, my intonation was absolutely terrible and i ran out of room to adjust it. The strings also didn't fit well at the nut, i would've needed to file it or get a custom one put on. The biggest strings i can comfortably fit on it are 12-56 gauge without any issues. I would like to know what might be different, making my guitar impossible to get proper intonation with that big of strings? Because like you said, yours was ok, and it sounded like you could've adjusted it and gotten it set up right

    • @Stringjoy
      @Stringjoy  6 років тому +1

      I've done alot of work on this guitar so that helps. But in your case, one trick that can occasionally help when it feels like you can't move the saddle enough to intonate it is to adjust the height of your tailpiece and try it again.

    • @JonNewquist
      @JonNewquist 5 років тому

      Scott, did you re-slot the nut?

    • @Stringjoy
      @Stringjoy  5 років тому +1

      Not this time, but I have before. But it's worth noting, I wasn't keeping it set up like this forever, so I didn't make any permanent modifications.
      Not-coincidentally my tech put a new nut on this guitar not long after this experiment, haha.
