Salut! Hope you guys enjoyed my little French Test! :) My score was a 38 out of 50. I had a couple of questions like the difference between the vous and tu that I couldn't truthfully give myself points for! I would consider this score pretty frenchified, right? If you got every single one right, plus the bonus questions, you could have scored over 50! Anyone get over 50? Adding all the trips and the time I lived in Paris I spent 21 months of my life in France, and my score was 22 🙂 (or 24: the stilettos questions were tricky for a man 😆)

I’m Swiss French (1/4 French) and I got 35. Until part 3, I thought I wasn’t French at all, but from the 3rd part (including the bonus), it caught up rapidly :D Ever since the virus started, I stopped doing the bise if there are many people or especially with strangers.
Got 40 (French native). Leaving abroad, I may be a bit loose on some 'French' habits, but you make a pretty good targetting in your list and I still go about most of what you have described, like long - or rather 'proper' - lunch breaks, bread on table, no ice, no take away, complaining for the sake of it/or fun/or stress release/or discussion triggering, etc.. I am never late, just don't like it, but I am not bothered by others being 15min late.... so made it count. Not so for the butter thing.... I'd put some or not in equal measure; spent years in Brittany which put this in habits - which I did not have before - so that is a item that would not apply everywhere in France, also it depends on the quality of the bread! Oh, and I have no stilettos (I'd say it's a rare styling choice for men in most places). And for the tu/vous, that is exactly what you say, not often would I not be sure, but then there's always a way to avoid using either until the situation clarifies.

Very entertaining. I’m french and I got 35 points. Personally, I also use the « vous » with people I don’t really want to get involved with. For me, of course it is a way to show my respect to someone, but if I feel I wouldn’t like to be closer with someone, it is an easy way to keep them at a distance, respectfully.
Exactly with the vous. So when you use "tu" and then they "vous" you, it's like extra awkward... Bravo with the 35!

I scored 38, including the bonus 5, without being French, but it turns out being continental European was enough to tide me over. Anyways, I love France and have been there a few times. Hope to visit again soon.
16. I’m American and have never lived in France. I visited Paris once and started learning French in college/university. Still studying and improving my French, but it’s definitely still at beginner level!
I'm FR "tu vs vous" is not easy, even for french people, but sometimes it's a good surprise. You should say "vous" and you say "tu" and lets go

Le second degré (ce n'est pas exactement du second degré - même si le second degré est typiquement français - mais c'est compliqué à expliquer, je n'ai pas trouvé de meilleur terme pour exprimer ce que je veux dire) aussi est culturel en France.
Je suis abonné à la chaîne de "Dereck Reacts", un américain qui réagit à des chansons avec une très forte communauté française dans ses abonnés. Et, à force de le suivre, je me suis rendu compte que le "second degré" était inné en France.
En effet, à chaque fois qu'il regarde un clip français (lui ou d'autres vlogers américain) ou réagit à une chanson, il prend toujours ce qu'il voit ou entend au premier degré (il prend pour argent comptant ce qui lui est présenté). C'est quelque chose qui est parfois déstabilisant pour nous, parce qu'il ne perçoit pas immédiatement l'ironie sous-jacente ou la métaphore. Alors que pour nous, c'est automatique.
Il prend les choses toujours factuellement, sans chercher le côté abstrait, plus souterrain, l'autre versant.
C'est vraiment une attitude qui nous différencie des américains.
Un Français observe toujours les choses non seulement factuellement, mais aussi avec une certaine forme de détachement, d'ironie, de cynisme, ou même de poésie.
Le Français cherche instinctivement les doubles sens, les symbolismes ; ce qui est suggéré mais qui n'est pas immédiatement visible si on prend les choses factuellement justement. Pourtant, ce qui est suggéré nous apparaît presque immédiatement à nous autres Français, sans même s'en rendre compte.
C'est vraiment quelque chose de culturel en France. On ne se contente jamais de la surface. Notre "paréidolie" intellectuelle est exacerbée.
Désolé, j'ai un peu de mal a expliquer clairement ce que je veux dire car c'est une notion très fine mais pourtant elle fait vraiment toute la différence dans la manière d'aborder un événement ou un discours ou une œuvre entre un Français et un Américain...

32 here french and paid to eat at restaurant and drink wine. Also 5 weeks vacation is stupidly short ...i m aiming for ten and just starting to get there. At 50.. ( ok i work in the wine trade and restaurants are my clients...it helps ..)

Great entertaining video! I'm a Hispanic American and speak English and Spanish natively. I got 22 points. The only thing that makes vs easier for me is that it's almost identical to Spanish with "tu" vs "usted"

i got the bonus point, because it’s pretty easy. you just use vous with anyone who is older or in a different position to you, anyone who you are meeting for the first time. it is only when the person tells you to call them by tu that you use tu, because it’s a show of respect to call them by vous, so they won’t be bothered by it in my experience
Yes, pretty much. In my case, i hate using "vous", so i say "tu" even to my boss whenever i can. Well, i never said i wasn't socially awkward. I dislike when people tell me "vous", too. I am unsure where this comes from, it is not like i was born a foreigner...

42/50 as a French native. No bonus point at the end, but as you said, when i don't know, i'm able to construct a sentence without having to say one or the other ;-). I don't mind la bise but not when there is a lot of people (too loooong !). I always cheer looking in the eyes, but just because "that's the way to do it", not because of the fear of bad sex 😅
I'm British born but I moved to France when I was 3 years old and I'm now 21. I got a score 28
It was funny doing the quiz I'm French-American but moved to the states as an adult. Sometimes I feel like I'm loosing some of my french habits and culture. But after taking that quiz I realized I still do a lot of those things. For my fiance it was hard for him at first to get used to me complaining and arguing.
I'm surprised you think eating baguette without butter is French. I mean, french people LOVE their butter. I personally use it EVERYWHERE! Currently living abroad and they don't have french butter, only local equivalent and I got to say it really not the same :P
Especially when you come from britanny, salted butter is close to a cult there!
Totally agree that the French love butter. I think for me what's different is that they don't put butter on an untoasted baguette. For example, you don't have a bread basket in french restaurant and also have butter next to it. In the US this is unheard of. But yes, people do love butter on toasted bread or other dishes and salted butter here is amazing!

Bravo on the "how French are you" questions selection, they are spot on although I'm laughing to the fact that you made your bonus question about "Tu vs Vous" rather than "Il vs Elle". But yes any one who tallies over 20 points can say they are well on their way to Frenchification!

I got 35 points. My mother was French and I have relatives in France and see France as a big part of my life and who I am. I love going to France. I spoke French reasonably well when I was young and want to get it back now even if my grammar is not that good. I never took a class. I liked your test. It was not only fun, but some merit too. I don’t really speak French but am very comfortable with using the Tu/Vous. That is because we have the same construction in Romanian.

I only got 17, heh heh. I guess it's not that surprising. I enjoy living amidst French culture but still am very much the American inside. I did give myself partial credit on a few of the questions heh heh, in particular the last one - I gave myself 4 because I really can't remember the last time I messed it up. The only time I feel myself hesitating is with young children I don't know lol - they're strangers, so "vous", but I guess you wouldn't vouvoyer a 5-year-old! 😆

Only 20/50 but my excuse is I've only been in France for 18 months so I still have a lot to learn. Not had much opportunity to faire la bise for a start. Also gave myself the benefit of the doubt a couple of times eg I don't have Stan Smiths but I do wear trainers (sneakers) which I *never* did before moving here. I've never said "I propose...' but I have started to think in French phrases instead of the English equivalent. I'm a work in progress! Fun quiz!

Depends on the foreigner. As far as i know, only english native speakers oversimplified their language to the point where it came to this.

@@smlorrin I don't consider anything as superior or inferior. Simply different and serving different purposes. You are misunderstanding. It is true that english has been oversimplified. There are several reasons as far as i know, the most recent being that it is the most learned language in the world, and so, the average proficiency of the language's speakers is pretty low. Plus, the language itself is not particularly protected by linguistic institutions, compared to some others. While this helps to spread the language, ultimately, it contributes massively to oversimplify it, too. While i have been struggling to learn decent english, and respect the language and its speakers for a decade now, i still can't brag about mastering a proper literary kind of english, and at this point, i probably contribute to drag it down, too. Many languages retain masculine and feminine for objects and countries. And yes, english got dumbed down partly due to it spreading and being spoken by plenty of people with a poor proficiency level. Now, that doesn't make english an easy language to learn. French and many other languages have the feminine and masculine for objects, and english has many weirdnesses like 'haul', 'howl', hole', and i am sure you don't understand what i mean. But i can tell you that we have a hell of a hard time with english. Actually, i still can't speak it i guess, because i can't understand it when spoken without subtitles. Even after a decade of daily efforts. haul, howl, hole, this is it.

About the Tu vs Vous - A French friend once mentioned that if it's a person you want to kiss don't ever use Vous - And if it's the parents of people you want to kiss don't ever use Tu - Personally I prefer to tutoyer everyone - Mainly only use Vous on occasions that I have to talk to people at least a few years older than me that I don't want to kiss or like know too well - Not the way most people do it I know but I do it like this - Ask people if they prefer tu ou vous and you won't face any problems I reckon - Always try 'on' then wait for the person to use Tu or Vous and then do likewise possibly too - And if you want to kiss the person then try to make their Vous a Tu haha !
Nowadays, if you give the bise or the hug to anyone, you're not French or American, you're just dangerous because of the Covid risk.

I m French, so my recommendations for you about the use of tu or vous would be to follow this rule : always go with vous ( unless they’re a kid) and let the person invite you to say “ tu. “ they will friendly say “tu peux me tutoyer, tu sais?..,”
And you re right, sometimes Even French don’t know if they should say Tu or Vous…. So I follow this rule myself, so that I never feel awkward with going back to vous after having said Tu …
So if ,you doubt about what to say , you re French too! 😄

I'm french, but I'm almost never late, and I tend to apologize a lot when I'm like 1 minute late. We use to say " l'exactitude est la politesse des rois" (Which mean that being on time is more thant polite, it's good education)
South of France: dinner time is actually more commearound 20.00; especially now in summer, when it's so hot that you're not hungry. Right now, more or less 21.00. But I can't stand the long meals, so boring.
And obviously, no milk, no sugar in my coffee ( but a square of bitter dark chocolate over 80% cocoa is always welcomed). And Shock: I never , never ever drink wine, yes some french people hate wine, and I'm one of them. As much as I dislike politics, actually.
Thanks to Covid, la bise went out of mode, I hate this too, so tedious to kiss people you'd prefer to avoid.
ahaha, vous and tu, is actually easy peasy when you learn it almost teached to you since the day you start talking. Its almost the same situations in russian, so russian people usually pick it quite quickly. Simply put, just stick to the "vous", it's the safe option, until the other person actually tells you to say " tu"

OK Part 1 7pts, part 2 20 points, part 3 14 points. So funny just one or two things : how in hell can I have points about stiletto has I am neither a woman nor a drag queen? About the social 15 min, never have been raised to be late, used to be raised after : la ponctualité est la politesse des rois. And about your dad joke the full sentence is 'married or hanged'. Very true for the stiletto's but to be fair if you own converse sneakers or stan smiths, you could have gotten another point! And i think 41 points for a Frenchman is a very solid score!! :)

i almost never eat baguette, and in my part of France we put a lot of (salted) butter on bread, especially for breakfeast. Prefer mugs to bowls. Hate being late and dislike other being late. Drink almost no coffee at home. Etc.... Oh, and no stiletto and no sneakers either. Too bad !
