Derek? The Derek?! I have missed your extraordinary reviews so much. I’m curious why the Birch Luxe is $1,000 more than the Birch original when it’s only .5” higher. I know it has cashmere in the cover, but I don’t personally think that’s worth an extra grand. Excellent review though.

Oh you're too kind, thank you :) I'm really happy to be back testing mattresses again!
Here are the major differences between Birch and Birch Luxe:
      1) Birch Luxe has a higher end coil system, 1130 coils vs 750 coils in the standard Birch.
      2) Birch Luxe has a higher-end quilted cover, most notably it's the organic cashmere that's increasing the cost
      3) Birch Luxe uses a zoned coil system for more support where you need it (namely in the mid-section).
      4) Birch Luxe has notably better edge support (due to the coil system)
Most of these differences are the result of a higher end coil system they are using in the Luxe version. In my view, the Birch Luxe is definitely the better mattress, but probably not $1,000 better. I suspect there is a good bit of extra markup in there. Still a reasonably good value, but not as good a value as the regular Birch.
      I did a deep dive comparison here - naplab.com/mattress-comparisons/birch-vs-birch-luxe/ - if you're interested.

What are your thoughts on the extra lumbar support? I just ordered it but I’m a 170lb male side sleeper and worry I’ve made a mistake and should cancel the order.

We didn't test the version with extra lumbar support, so I cannot say for sure. But in general, as a 170 lb. side sleeper I wouldn't typically recommend extra lumber unless you really feel like your body needs it.
Most of the type that extra lumbar would only be needed for heavier weighted bodies and/or those with lower back pains resulting from inadequate support.

Thanks! It’s actually just the luxe version. They say it has zoned support and more wool. You mention it’s softer which is why I got it, but I worry the zoned support could be a negative. Maybe it’s subtle and mostly marketing.

@@gideon-af In my view, it's pretty subtle. I really don't expect this will be a problem area for you.

Thank you Mr. Nap Lab! I forgot to use your referral link. If you make some mattress topper videos I will be sure to use your link. Or if I return the mattress and buy another one.

What do you think about a latex hybrid vs all natural latex? I'm looking at an all natural latex that's 6' dunlop and 3' talalay with a joma new Zealand wool top. Wonder if hybrid is better than that combo

In general, I've found latex hybrids to perform better than 100% latex.
The hybrid design creates better cooling, a more balanced feel, a more traditional feel, better sex performance, and better edge support. They are also significantly lighter, making them easier to move around as needed.
You can see the latex hybrids I've tested here - naplab.com/mattress-reviews/#hybrids
