Found this little paragraph that explains why this works to trick the ags system.
"The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) receives a message from the Active Grill Shutter (AGS) Actuator that the open to close position travel is above 100 degrees or the mechanical stop was detected before the commanded position was reached."
Basically the ags motor has a little arm that moves back and forth. When you first turn your engine on it actuates doing a full cycle. If the arm moves all the way to the forward position it knows that the fins are missing, giving you a check engine light. When the fans are installed correctly it blocks the arm from doing a full cycle. The purpose of the screw is to stop it at that point so it doesn't give you a P1D73 code.

Does that mean the fans are not working correctly or installed correctly and I need to fix them ? If I trick the computer and the light goes away doesnt that mean the problem is still there or does the problem resolve becuase its a computer issue :?
@@ADawg467 If you have this code, your fans should be on all of the time. It thinks or knows that your ags is broken so it turns on the fans so your engine doesn't overheat.
These are the possible causes for the code:
Active grill shutter actuator poor electrical connection
Active grill shutter obstructed/binding
Active grill shutter actuator linkage
disconnected/binding/broken
Active grill shutter actuator mounting hardware loose or missing
Active grill shutter actuator
with the bumper off, you can visibly see if the wires are broken/disconnected, if the shutters are obstructed, or if hardware is missing. Turn the car on and you can see if the actuator is moving.

You said putting the screw in the hole tricks the computer to thinking the active grille shutter is still there. Is the sensor with the screw in it the active grille shutter or did you remove the active grille shutter? I have this P1D73 code on my 2013 Dodge Dart. I am trying to figure out how I want to approach a solution without a mechanic
It's the motor for the active grille shutter that the screw goes into. And yes, I did remove the active grille shutter. Idr what my code was, possibly the same one but It doesn't cost anything to try this for yourself. I go into detail on my problem in a few of my other videos.

@allisonkessler17 No, it has a purpose. But it's not necessary and can be removed if you wish to do so.
When at low speeds, cruising around the city, the shutters will open, allowing more air into your engine bay to cool it down. At higher speeds like on the highway, the shutters will close, making your car more aerodynamic and probably providing a very small increase in fuel mileage.
If you want to make more power, it is counterproductive to have a grille shutter because it will reduce the amount of air that can get to your engine.

So I put the screw to stop the trigger but do I also have to disconnect the battery to get it to stop the loud noise?
If you have a code reader, you can clear the code with that but if not, yes, disconnect the battery.

Not that I'm aware of. You need the motor to be able to trick the system into thinking that the shutter is functional.
My mechanic charged me $172 to diagnose this issue (strangely timed 15 mins after I left the shop after getting the entire clutch system replaced) and now they want $1200+ to replace the grill shutter. Am I being ripped off?
Yes. I can't speak for the diagnosis but you can get a brand new active grille shutter for much much less than that and it's super simple to install. Or if you don't care about the active grille shutter, you can do this "screw trick."

@@Eliazarr79 unfortunately, I'll have to get this fixed at some point because I can hear the air intake problems. But getting new winter tires first is a bigger priority.
Just got mine working on my car and they were trying to charge me about a 1000$. My fix costed me only 12$ which was the harness. I got the an ags but i ended up not using it so i will return it now. Please let me know if you are still having this problem, i can help you with a step by step on how to diagnose it and fix it as cheap as possible. Unfortunately all three mechanics that i went to chose the most expensive fix. Idk if they knew or what but i got you if you need anything
Does this method work for the 2020 Nissan Rogue?
So i took this into the dealership and they left the grille shutter in the open position, and then unplugged the actuator. This left my radiator fan running non stop until i get a new grille shutter. Will the radiator fan continue to run if i do this trick?
No, if you do this the fan will turn off after the code has been cleared. If you don't have someone to clear the code for you, you can just disconnect the battery and reconnect it.
what is the new harness for? is it to be able to extend and relocate the motor, or is it because you needed a replacement harness or what?
I needed a new harness, one of the wires snapped.

You have to mix and match until you get it right. It helps if you can find a pigtail that has at least 2 of the wires color coded.
So you just deleted the shutter guards all in general and just put the screw in and it deleted the code?

This is my most popular video lol. It's definitely helping people. What is the exact problem with yours? I forget the codes but I had "ags malfunction" or something like that. That was because I deleted the grille shutter. The screw trick fixes that. I also had "lost communication with ags" buying a new pigtail fixes that.
