I'm Japanese living in Tokyo. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s proposal for a four-day workweek faces significant challenges. If the current five-day workload remains unchanged, condensing it into four days will likely lead to longer work hours and increased employee burden. This undermines the goal of achieving a better work-life balance. Japan’s work culture, which often values long hours, also poses an obstacle to adopting this system. Additionally, without hiring more staff or improving efficiency, maintaining the same workload over fewer days is unrealistic. Critics have pointed out that Governor Yuriko Koike’s policies often lack concrete implementation plans. Past promises, such as eliminating rush-hour congestion and redeveloping Tsukiji Market, have largely remained unfulfilled. Without a clear roadmap and practical solutions, the four-day workweek may end up being another unfulfilled pledge.
I couldn't give two hoots what happened to Asaad, I hope I never hear of him and his mob again. But the BBC coverage of the fallout in Syria makes me want to weep with laughter. The tortured prisoners, some decomposted, with a journalists pathologist eye,the evidence is there for all to see. An American escapes after months in a gulag and looks a picture of health. No doubt there have been terrible human rights abuse, including torture. But some of these journalists should cast an eye in their own backyard. How many tortured souls have ended up getting scraped off a motorway of a railway track? How many prisoners have had to be cut down after hanging themselves? How many elderly or children and the mental health suffering people have been let down over the years? When the Smug middle classes point the finger at dictators, they are pointing three fingers at their own so-called democracy.
I was going to say something cheesy/banal after the dating part like I would happily date either one of you…..but then by the end of the segment on Syria I just realised that I might be confused and just fancy you both for your intellects! Thankyou both for everything. Would love to see you tear piers Morgan apart in a debate Helena. Have you seen his last interview with Lowkey? Well worth a watch
The root cause of Japan’s declining birth rate can be traced back to the burst of the economic bubble in the early 1990s and the subsequent “Lost 30 Years.” In Japan, new graduates are expected to secure full-time employment immediately after university. Missing this opportunity often means losing access to stable, full-time jobs. The generation that graduated during the post-bubble era, including myself, faced a job market where the employment rate for new graduates was only 60%. Many young people were forced into non-regular employment, such as temporary or contract work, due to the introduction of the dispatch worker system. This led to a lifetime of low wages, lack of social insurance, and no job security-losing work meant losing income immediately. With hourly pay and no chance for promotions or raises, financial insecurity made marriage and having children difficult. This employment system and era significantly accelerated Japan’s declining birth rate, as many simply could not afford to start families.
I like the jumper tonight Michael

The unintended consequences of his plan are plain to see, the long term environmental impact of these projects will be far and wide.
