- This video describes a process for analyzing existing compositions. The goal of an exercise like this is to build a greater familiarity with design and the organization of formal elements within. After doing a number of exercises such as these, the hope is that you build a larger awareness of visual strategies to add into your own work.

My two main art school mentors were John Hubbard, an oil painter, and Steve Hughes, an illustrator. Both of them were incredibly hard to impress but your work impressed both of them quite a bit and I learned a lot from your book. Glad you’re still making videos.
Awesome tutorial!!! I am going to share this with my friends, they struggle with composition a lot. Thanks for sharing these!
Awesome, thank you!
I am a beginner 13 yo old high schooler here😅
Wish I started at 13!
Yeah, double what he said. You’re gonna be able to draw circles around me if you listen to Hampton, all my professors swear by him. Even if you don’t read anything, just copying the drawings out of “Figure Design and Invention” (his book) will make you really good really fast.
Oh boy! You have such an early start! I envy you! 💀

Amazing video
Thanks!
Your Figure Drawing book has quite literally been my bible over the last 7-8 months, I used my university’s library copy to death and have now bought my very own since having to return it!
I’m sure I would’ve never gotten anywhere near as far with drawing without it, so thanks 🥲
Thanks so much for sharing that! Really does make it all seem worth doing to hear.
I’m glad I recently discovered this channel because it’s awesome seeing it all come to life in front of me and helps me connect up some of the puzzle pieces that I previously glossed over
Cheers again from Australia
