  • Testing a Mossberg Patriot .300 Win. Mag. two 20 round groups with different ammo. That is right 40 rounds for you to see.
First Not a very expensive fire arm this is not a $6000.00 custom this is a off the shelf $500.00 Mossberg.
Today this firearm is a little cheaper then when we bought it. We purchased the Patriot rifle with a scope.
We removed the scope added a Vortex Scope that was worth twice what the firearm was. And went to test it.
Obviously the first clean bore and cold bore shot was a little different. Not a bad group either way.
For either ammo Many rounds touch. If we changed targets between groups I have no doubt we would show some tight 3 or 4 round groups. But we do not pull our punches this is the good bad and ugly. Total group and a test and variation that is repeatable to the end user.
Please note Rifle is held semi floating. Therefore when it recoils the cushy but pad impedes rifle from settling. If you can remove cushy butt pad when testing Rifle returns to battery position with no variation. But due to the cushy butt pad. Rifle can deviate slightly between rounds.
Therefore some slight adjustment was needed between rounds. Please note when testing rifles with floating barrels you can not securely hold rifle over fore stock. This will change harmonics and end results.
That factor and the cushy butt pads makes it difficult to hold rifle so it does not deviate. a .001 deviation at the bench transfers to 3.5" at 100 yards our machine is better then .015 max deviation at 100 yards.
The issue has always been holding rifle securely but not changing harmonics or vibrations.
Therefore the way we hold the rifle is repeatable to the end user. Our motto is Recoil and vibration can not be stopped it must be repeatable controlled.
This machine and clamping method allows rifle to function as if in your hand.
Group was actually done at 90 yards laser ranged. We could not make it to 100 that day due to the incline of the terrain we were on.
Comment like and share. Ask what you want. we will do our best to answer all questions.
We do not specialize in video or documentation, only making good American made machines.

Why would you not just aim for the center of the target? Just seems odd.

    • @Ransomrest

You are right and that is a great question. We actually did. We just mounted the scope and you may notice we forgot to turn camera on for first couple rounds. My fault,
We hung target mounted firearm and zeroed it to the center of target. I eye ball bore sighted it. and first round hit down at the 5 o clock ish position. at 100 yards I moved reticle to that Point of impact and commenced testing.
If I would of turned camera on in time I could of shown that first aim point and first impact point . I may mention also when target shooting I prefer to have retical just right of inpact. This allows me to maintain Point of aim. If point of impact wipes out my reference point on paper I loose the Point of aim Reference when target shooting.
Therefor years ago I was trained to have retical just right of impact when grouping on paper. Sure that was not the case here but thought I would mention that, Due to some of our other videos reflect that.
Please also keep in mind when I am doing this kind of testing. It is not as much about point of aim , on center of point of impact. As it is for me to just maintain a repeatable point of aim, regardless were point of impact is, and see what that ammo repeats at Regardless of group size, I am just watching the point of impact. When I change ammo grain Point of impact changes as well as group size change. As long as I maintain Point of aim between rounds repeatably.
Therefor after I have tested all ammo grain we have available or have decided on, and once I establish which ammo has the most repeatable point of impact/ smallest group size, I then at the end of the test once I have the data. I duplicate the best ammo result, and that is when I will zero to center of impact. And verify Point of aim, to Point of impact. During the test I actually do not care much about were retical is and impact is for that ammo. I am just throwing rounds to see what it likes. I am just trying to maintain the Same Point of aim. Zeroing to center group for each ammo lengthens the test as well as it is not needed, until ammo grain is decided on. There actually is to much variation between ammo grain on Point of impact to point of aim. But I am sure you know that.
So yes we started in center target but due to it was a new mounted scope It was not zeroed for first shot. Point of impact was low to point of aim. Same situation for the second group we hung target to center of reticle. Forgot to turn camera on, My bad again, I was Pre occupied in thought in test, And as you see round was again just low of aim. By time I had camera on I already moved reticle to point of impact for reference point. The first group we did you can see that once zeroed the rounds were just left of reticle. We hung the second target, with reticle in center of target, From our zero of first rounds The first rounds of the 2 group with the different grain ammo, hit low left under red center, rounds hit at 4 ocklock not the 8 oclock were it was zeroed on the last group. moved reticle to that point of impact for that grain and finished the ammo group test. With a noticeable difference in ammo grouping.
Hope that all makes since in my scatter explanation. If you have any more questions or need more clarity please ask. We are here to help.

With off the shelf match ammo it will do MOA pretty easily even with my amateur skills

Absolutely some guns will, see our other videos, This is just what this gun grouped with that ammo. Keep in mind this is a stock inexpensive Mossberg with stock ammo. We got this at a MSRP total gun price was under 500 came with a scope. Not expensive at all find them everywhere new at or under 6 with a scope. Bummer the Ruger American in 7.62 did better. But for price of this gun including a scope not bad at all really. This has a really thin barrel for that caliber, as well as gun is very light for a 300 Win Mag. Also keep in mind BC is not constant some guns hold .75 at 100 and .75 at 200 and 1" at 300 some may hold until 400 before they start spreading. BC is not constant gradual in most cases it can hold good BC for distance then start spreading. This may hold that to out to 300 we do not know without testing. Also some bullets do not even calm down the flight path until after 100 yards. The BC is still volatile for heaver rounds. Sometimes just a muzzle break will calm the BC for out to 100. This is a thin barrel I have no doubt a muzzle break or a suppressor will calm that barrel and BC as well as cut it in half. Thin barrels do whip. Most long range guns are thick heavy this is really light gun .Not bad for that model Mossberg Patriot think it costs around $350 most places without scope fyi..

Ransom International by no means am I bashing you or your ability to shoot, I believe there is always room for improvement. The rifle shoots but it's accuracy is questionable though. The old saying "you get what you pay for" stands true here. I personally run a Savage 110 BA Stealth in 300wm and a leupold VX-3i 4.5-14x50 side focus on top and it's a tack driver at 300 yards

@@dreamcrusher-mkv2346 Yep pretty much you get what you pay for. This is also why we use the machine to test the rifle. It has nothing to do with any ones ability or if they flinched.
Many manufacturers use this machine. It removes all that human error, now you know what this will group like, Period. You now know with out a doubt what this rifle will hold. Sure not all barrels the same. Not all rifles are the same. Not all guns like the same ammo. But that is what this gun will do. MAny guns will hold a 1/2" moa but do they do it repeatable. This machine is what shows if it will.
In case you may not know, Ransom is the inventor of the rifle and pistol rest from the 60s. Many have copied or made similar to our patented tri leg Rifle Rest . Many rest company's have been made by offering similar to our rests, but we are still here we still all American made and over 50 years and counting. The original Rifle Master, That is us. As well as Military calls our Master Series Rest the industry standard for accuracy testing . Thank you for the input the criticism and your interest. We are here to help.

I have always said for the price not a bad gun at all. We do not regret buying it. But a few things to consider to answer your question. #1 It is a beautiful gun, for the cost probably the best looking gun for that price, the best wood stock for that price we have seen.
#2 It is a light gun, and a 300 win mag kicks hard, therefore due to it is a light gun and a big round it kicks pretty hard. A heaver gun would kick less, but a heaver gun is heaver to carry through the bush.
#3 300 Win Mag not a cheap round not cheap to shoot, box of 20 rounds are pretty high, but this is a inexpensive gun keep that in mind. . Some ammo had a hard time even holding a 6" group at 100. This firearm likes the lighter grain it held really nice with the lighter grain. Sure not a MOA or sub MOA gun but to get to MOA you usually have to drop 1.5 to 2 Grand.

    • @Ransomrest

The 300 Win. Mag. is a classic “standard-length” cartridge based on the belted 375 H&H Magnum case. It fits actions designed for 30-06-length cartridges. The 300 WSM is a rebated rim, short-action round that fits 308-length rifle actions.
They are used for a lot of the same shooting and hunting applications but these two cartridges are not interchangeable.

They ain't the same round for heaven's sake! The 300 Winchester Magnum is a lot longer and narrower round. The 300 Winchester short Magnum is a very fat, Short round that will not chamber in a 300 Winchester Magnum. The reason why Winchester invented the whole Short Magnum line of cartridges is because they don't sacrifice velocities being fired from a shorter action, henceforth the gun is lighter and shorter without sacrificing barrel length.
