Great review! I own Schitt's Gungnir Multibit DAC myself, and jumped in to multibit audio a BIT on the deep end...and LOVE it! It's amazing that Schiit has such a wide range of DACs and there is something available in ANY price point! I can't recommend them enough!

@@rajendrabiswas Yggdrasil > Gungnir multibit > Bifrost multibit > Modi multibit. Each is a step up from the one below, but ALL of them are better than delta-sigma DACs at their price point. Speakers/headphones are twice as important as the amp which is twice as important as the DAC. 4:2:1. So, knowing that, pick a multibit (or R2R) DAC whose price justifies its place in the rest of your signal chain. Like, you wouldn't pair an Yggdrasil with a Topping L30 feeding Beats headphones. Definitely invest more into speakers/headphones before the amp before the DAC. But once you have a nice amp and transducer, a good R2R or multibit DAC is that last little step of goodness that brings out the music to a next level of joy.

Thanks for this review. You've explained it better/simpler than many descriptions of multibit dacs on the internet. I also felt vindicated after repeatedly preferring the modi multibit over many of my delta sigma dacs ive had like the d30, modi 3, d50s and e30. cheers.

BTW, I just compared MM to the Chord Mojo and E30. The Mimby sounds closer to the Mojo than the Topping DACs, which makes you think if Delta Sigma Chip dacs are really the more accurate ones. But I still prefer the Modi Multibit in the end over the Mojo for better timbre and 3d-layering. While the Mojo is a bit cleaner & more defined / faster transients. So great Value for Money for the MM. ua-cam.com/video/74JCFa9-eAQ/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/B46zJu9Ahn0/v-deo.html

Thank you for another good review. I listened to your sound comparison too. I like your description of the sound from the Schiit Modi Multibit as a “fluffed up pillow”. The multibit does provide more comfortable music, just as a fluffed up pillow provides better comfort to a resting head. My impression was that the Schiit provides clearer audible comfort. The difference was quite amazing. Well done!

Thanks again for a detailed review! I have owned this DAC for a number of years and also upgraded to version 2. The word of boldness is unclear to me as you describe here, I think a better word is fleshed out like the real thing. There is a clarity and openness that you do not hear from the Topping E30. Everything sounds more nuanced which gives you a feeling that the recording is live (or alive). This is especially noticeable in a resolving stereo system and with video in my opinion. Cheers!

RE: Burn-in/warm up. This is probably more of an issue on the higher end multibit products. I notice a BIG difference if I turn my Gungnir multibit off vs. letting it run continuously. It took about a week (!) initially, but now, if turned off, it takes about 4 hours of warming up before it sounds it's best. Now, whether you will notice that on the Modi 2 and your associated equipment is debatable, but there is SOMETHING going on with multibit DACs that does make a difference!

I'm not sure where you live in the world but look for some vintage MB DAC's in your area, I have several DAC's from Theta which I picked up on the used market and I enjoy listening to these MB DAC's more than newer DS DAC's. They just sound fuller and more natural...perhaps more analog! And yes...my DAC's need warm up if I unplug the power, sometimes it can take up to 30 mins before the sound settles in! Modi Multibit 2 is my first schiit product. Was very disappointed at how muddy it was and I don't really believe in burn in. But then I left it on for a night and suddenly it sounds exactly as I expected it to sound. Clear sounding, large soundstage, clean bass response (but punchy) and smooth treble response. Quite a strange experience but well as long as it sounds great I am not complaining.

@@artvandelay837 it is amazing, the Modi Multibit 2 was to replace my topping e50. Everything sounds so natural now. The topping E50 has that nasal sound to women's vocal and is not as good at separating sounds, treble sounds very sharp and bass sounds veiled, it is as if both the bass and treble is unnaturally boosted.
At first I was also using the L50 to accompany the E50. That was a horrible experience. The Lake People G111 MKII fixed the issue a lot and now after I upgraded to Multibit 2, every issue is fixed and now I enjoy my listening experience very much.
The headphone that I use is the Austrian Audio Hi-X65. In a way this is a very transparent studio headphone so the changes in sound signature when switching between amps and DACs are very apparent. I've tried this headphone on other DACs and amps and it sounds really different on each.

The cons are: despite of its detailed sound, the sound was very compressed and lacked of airy feeling. But the main reason I sold the stack was they sounded very one-noted. I meant the volume of every notes, every instruments and voices had the same magnitude. You would never known when the guitarlist or drummer play a particular note harder/stronger with that type of sound. It was lifeless to my ear. With many headphones and iems. And I was lazy to find if it was the fault of my Schiit amp or my Schiit multibit dac back then. I just sold them.

Want more highs I would suggest an AD (AD op amps have quit a bit more bass punch) or even MUSES01 or 02 (MUSES02 is a mid machine, the remote will vibrate in your hand when it didn't before). All electronics have a burn in, if you have never heard the components change then your system needs work. I can replace one film capacitor and hear the settling or melting or whatever happens, 50 hours is a good rule for settle time.

I went to my backyard and found a decorative, "magic rock". The sound of my Modi 3 improved just as you described. Leaving it powered up seems to make a difference and ... the longer I've owned it, the more it seems to have opened up ... more air and spatial cues. Short of what I am asking:
Any thoughts on how the multibit might perform against say Soncoz dacs, the SMSL SU-9, etc? Even a Topping D70s MQA, a really, really nice dac that doesn't immediately sound much better but you know it is as nothing irritates like a less expensive ESS dac and the musicality just washes over you. For the purpose intended, a few hundred dollars is more palpable but only if there is better SQ, otherwise spending more may have to be considered. Currently using a Keces E40 on Focal 807W and Triangle Zetas. It sounds like the Multibit might be an option.
    The long story:
My gear includes a Hegel h160 with an AKM dac (considering selling it for a lighter, smaller footprint). I purchased a Keces E40, a light, small 34/60 watt into 8/4 ohm loads which reminds me of a lighter version (in every way) of Hegel due to the SQ it produces at lower volumes. The Keces E40 is known to have a bit accentuated bass that remains tight, a solid midrange and a bit of rolled off highs... my hearing tops out around 13KHz or so. In spite of that, there is a sound I seem to like, airy highs, good separation, solid and balanced mids with a bit of warmth supporting it without being syrupy but remaining dynamic for both music and soundtracks.
I have tried a Lavaudio D600 (a Topping D50s clone) which started out sharper sounding but seemed to become less sibilant after using it for say 30+hrs. I tried a Loxjie D30 which sounded a bit more relaxed but still dynamic and which I liked a bit better than the Lavaudio but went back because my optical cables would not stay in, a problem I once had with a SMSL dac. So I have the Lavaudio which isn't bad but I recently exchanged it due to some defects so the new one still sits in the box. I also purchased a Topping D70s MQA which so far exceeds the SQ of my Marantz CD 6006 and produces a sound I really like. Very musical, probably on par or a bit better than the Hegel dac. I don't want to hear it on the Hegel to be tempted to upgrade even more.
The issue is, it's $650+tax on a $599 integrated. As I listen at lower levels, I am trying to replace my more expensive and heavier gear while retaining a certain level of SQ. I don't plan on using it for MQA streaming services or Hi Rez Downloads. I think basic streaming to start is fine but primarily to listen to a large collection of CDs and movies with the time I have. I could live with the Lavaudio but it doesn't sound as natural as the AKM based dacs. Cheaper dacs tend to fall short regarding transients, dynamics, resolution, etc even though detail remains sufficient for many. Then there's the connection issue, at least with some.
If the Multibit sounds at least as musical as the best dacs around $500 or even approaching the upper tier mid-fi units, even if rolled off but still providing sufficient resolution and a more holographic stage, this has me intrigued. I can upgrade desktop units as I delve into streaming later. Speakers I use tend to be detailed both of which sound good on the Keces...a bit better on the Hegel but at low to moderate volumes, it's fine. The Hegel deserves more expensive speakers and I don't want to go there.

    @iiWii Reviews Nice review.
How is the Schiit Modi MB vs SMSL DAC’s?
In the toser hand, Watch time I think in the posibilita to but a dedícate DAC, I wondering how it would work an audio interface la like the Motu M4 (ESS Sabre chips)compares with dedicated DAC‘s like the Modi.
I am using my audio interface as DAC no my desktop gear, and I am quite happy.
I use it as DAC, pre-amp, headphone amplifier and of course I use it with my microphone for doing recordings, video-conferences and also to digitalize my records and cassettes.
I get balanced outputs too that I could Connect to an amplifier or powered speakers with balanced inputs
Therefore, it seams a versatile and convenient solution.
But, Am I really losing something in quality when I use it as a DAC Compare with DAC like the Schiit Modi MB, Topping do SMSL ones?
    What do you think?
Could you do a test like that?

Thanks for a great review. Personally, I would not choose either the one or the other DAC because I don't like to compromise. High notes are very important to me / jazz and blues. Just like High notes, Mid is important too. I would not choose but go for the solution that gives me everything. Signal and speaker cables are also important.

Multibit 2 was released much later than this video and it has new and different hardware. This was still Multibit 1 that had a firmware and digital filter revision (which slightly improved its performanse). So it was just another revision or version of the same model, and at that time you could send the DAC to Schiit for that latest upgrade.
