So something that is very important to note is that the author never wanted to have Jo get married but they wouldn’t let her publish unless Jo was “redeemed”😢aka gets married. The author was also told that she had to add more “ladylike” behavior. Which is why I love what she did with Jo because Jo reflects the author and it becomes a commentary on women and the publishing industry. Honestly reading up on the author and the times makes the book 10x
I think the reason you're disappointed in the way Little Women turned out is the point of the book. It's the disillusionment of childhood once adulthood comes around. That the fairytale isn't the reality of how life turns out. Sometimes you just fall in love with a German dude...
what some other people said in the comments: reading up the author makes little women actually work for me. And also the 2019 movie--a lot of the dialogue comes from Louisa May Alcott's letters or diaries. Louisa May Alcott is my spinster queen who was making MONEY through her writing and supporting her whole family during a time when women did not make money (including supporting her useless father haha, which it makes sense as to why the father is absent so much in Little Women). Highly recommend the biography "Louisa and Marmee" by Eve LaPlante...listened to it on audio through Libby earlier this year
The bombastic side eye at 6:26 had me DYINGGGGG lmao but omg i literally squealed when i saw the title of the video!!! your rant was so valid but i'm glad the movie helped redeem the story a little bit for you, i love it so much Saoirse Ronan as Jo is everything
im literally so happy you're starting to feel the effects of anti depressants cause i remember when it happened to me and it was SUCH a relief like o....................................... i can actually Do The Things people tell us to do to feel better............ insane
Most of the „additional“ dialogue from the movie is taken straight from MLA‘s other writings! So it very much still reflects her values even if she was not able to put it into the book. Greta has talked a lot about this so its definitely worth looking up interviews she did for the movie. There are also some great video essays on the movie adaptations (if I‘m able to edit this comment on mobile I‘ll put in the links later!) Edit: ua-cam.com/video/xeS1adR-lfI/v-deo.html Edit 2: ua-cam.com/video/nJGZoecSmrA/v-deo.html
I CACKLED, your reaction to little women 2019 was literally me in the theatre xDD allow me to give my 2 cents on the book. imo jo/friedrich is the only ending that makes sense for jo bc she found an intellectual equal and someone who supports her work and hobbies. laurie and jo were good friends but he was always more of a brother figure from jo's pov and idk. i've always found her rejection of him ic bc she's asserting her opinion, she's not caving to peer pressure/expectations 🤷♀️
I’m so glad you wanted the movie cause your reaction at the end is exactly how I felt after watching that movie, I’m kinda scared to read the book now but since I already know what’s gonna happen I think I’m prepared for the whiplash, anyways happy vlogmas 💕💕
even tho this is for the 22nd is it in fact the 24th so merry christmas!! ik we've all said it a million times but ive been absolutely eating up these vlogs, one of the best parts of this month for me! hope your having a good Christmas today and tomorrow
hi whitney have actually been watching ur vids since u were in college but have never commented lol just want u to know that i love these vlogs so much !! hope u have a good christmas !!
Girl, you went on a journeeeeey! I'm glad you watched the movie right away. Your reaction at the end of it was totally me, full on sobbing. I've never read the book all the way through...and now I think I'm probably fine, lol.
0:08 awww the cats 🖤🩶🧡 rosie giving you a massage while listening to you talk is so cute 🥺 i skipped all of the little women spoilery parts and only watched some bits and pieces of it because i might read it soon, but wishing your friend should've brought the gun to you instead of you reading it is so funny 😭 ngl it's kinda making me nervous to even try lmao jk 😅 but yeah, i heard so many good things about the greta gerwig movie adaptation so i'm glad you liked it at least!
Yeah I'm pretty sure Louisa May Alcott was heavily pressured by her publishers to have Jo settle down and have a family, so her ending doesn't feel very satisfying to modern audiences. The 2018 movie is so good, I just cry the whole way through
Thank you for bringing us along with you every day! Merry Christmas to you and your family! Side note: Being from the Northeast, I have never thought about the South still having fall leaves in winter. You're all so lucky to still have color!
What a great way to start a birthday. I’m so glad you enjoyed the 2019 little women bc it’s so good and glad to know that I can permanently avoid reading little women lol. I hope spending time with your family is going well and that time off is continuing to be good for you ^_^
Whitney, you’re an absolute Rockstar What a great video. I love your commentary throughout the day please please continue your daily Vlogs they make my life worth living. I need the meds you are on so far I just have you! I hope your holidays remain Merry and Bright! p.s. I love that you played your Sister’s travel agent and got her home safe and sound for the holidays. If that’s not a holiday movie - book trope I don’t know what is! Stay Cool Cat 🐈🐈⬛🐈⬛
Congrats on finishing Little Women 🎉 Hooray you loved the 2019 movie 🥳 great editing as always but especially this one. Merry Christmas Eve to you and Bonnie 🎄
Team Jo here too. I want to read the other books in the Little Women series. Those Nerds gummies are my jam. Never heard of cookie dough bites? Maybe we don't have them in Canada. Merry Christmas Eve!
so happy you enjoyed the movie and that you feel like your meds are working!! i'm not gonna lie to you, i finished Make the Season Bright like a week ago and i HATED it mostly bc of one of the main characters so.... good luck bestie (i still hope you love it though)
I personally do not consider Good Wives as a part of Little Women, it's annoying that they are considered the same. I think Good Wives does disservice to Little Women. Edit: Gordo never disappoints!
The Little Women movies (Both the 2019 and the Winona Ryder versions) are my comfort films. I love them so much. The book? Absolute trash. Though I do have the most gorgeous copy ever to exist (the Puffin in Bloom version illustrated by Anna Rifle Bond). I might reread it again someday but like you, I very much wanted it to be over and was revolted by Laurie making a play for Amy when he couldn’t have Jo. 🤢
As someone who reads a lot of classics, you are allowed to not like every one that you read. There have been lots of classics that I don’t like/don’t understand the hype. I am a Great Gatsby hater for example lol
I started laughing when you talked about Amy/Laurie 🤣 They are one of my first otps, but I guess it is because I always cared more about Amy than I did about Jo. I know a lot of people shipped Laurie/Jo and even back then sent her letters so they would end up together. About classics, I don't think you should feel stupid! Think of classics as any other genre of books, there will be some that you love and some that you're meh about and some that really do it for you. For example: I'm using my copy of Jane Eyre to make my pc monitor taller because I did not like it.
OK but now you can go look up the “Little Women” (2019) x “Champagne Problems” edits, which I have been DYINGGGG to recommend for weeks now. Also, the 1993 movie is iconic, so I hope we get to experience you watching that, too. It came out when I was…7? And I think I watched it when I was 8 or 9, and only THEN read the book, which I would say is the correct way to do things - movie(s) first, then book in the context of the movies. Note on the 1993 movie: Winona Ryder specifically chose Christian Bale to play Laurie and I *believe* that was kind of his first high profile role as an adult. Bless.
Classics have betrayed me enough times to make me hesitant to pick them up. I may just skip Little Woman and move to my proffered literature. Raunchy romance 🥰
Don't feel stupid for not getting classics. Honestly some classics really aren't that great when compared to a modern standards, they were just the "best" at the time. Or they were the most poplular of that genre at that time. I love fighting classics and I think more people should. Books shouldn't just get a pass cause every highschool teacher finds it easy to teach it to 15 year olds. I will die on the hill that the Hunger Games are a better 'goverment dystopian' than 1984. I will be in Hell fighting that man for calling an armchair "sluttish". Like, what does that even meeeeeaaaaannnn????? Why does he think Australians and Brazilians have the same culture???????
Where did you get your mushroom sheets? I love them.. I haven't watched Little woman yet. I did go and see mufasa and I liked it, it was slow and the movie dragged. Bonnie I hope that you enjoy Mufasa
Whitney final knows someone deceases! How was she never spoiled in Friends over that?! xD All I know about Little Women is what's in these vlogs and that Jo was supposed to end up on her own, independant (and low key lgbt+).
Ohhhhh, I hope Make the Season Bright doesn't do you dirty. I loved the Delilah Green series (but I think you hated it??) so maybe we'll be opposites. I didn't want the two love interests to get together in Make the Season Bright LOL (not what you want in a romance). So much miscommunication and immaturity, oop.
So something that is very important to note is that the author never wanted to have Jo get married but they wouldn’t let her publish unless Jo was “redeemed”😢aka gets married. Your cats have impeccable comedic timing.

The cut to you crying at the end of the movie made me LOL 😹 also love the bonnie clip at the end, so glad to see she's doing great 🥹💖
The cut to you sobbing at the end of the movie is too real 😭

Merry (early) Christmas Whitney. Thank you for vlogmas, for keeping it real and making a lot of us feel seen and not alone. ❤
Girl, you went on a journeeeeey! I'm glad you watched the movie right away. Your reaction at the end of it was totally me, full on sobbing. I've never read the book all the way through...and now I think I'm probably fine, lol.

YES GIRL YES. Little Women (2019) is one of my faves that I watch every year now 🫶🏻

Me telling my family I have to go make a quick call but it's really me hiding away to watch this vlog
Omg that bridge where you were walking is so beautiful!! I want to put out a blanket and read there.
I havnt read Little Women so I loved the plot twist of the month! Gordo should be president at this point, he has some solid ideas 😂
Dang, I had high expectations of the book because I love the movie. (I’ve only seen the Saoirse Ronan one lol)
Thank you for bringing us along with you every day! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Side note: Being from the Northeast, I have never thought about the South still having fall leaves in winter. You're all so lucky to still have color!
I've literally been so busy since last Thursday I finally am caught up on vlogmas. I really need to watch little women after this
What a great way to start a birthday. I’m so glad you enjoyed the 2019 little women bc it’s so good and glad to know that I can permanently avoid reading little women lol. I hope spending time with your family is going well and that time off is continuing to be good for you ^_^

Watching you read little women has been making me want to read it. I have watched the 2019 version and sobbed but I think I want to read it
The intense biscuit making really had me laughing 😂
I have loved this vlogmas with you. Thank you for the gift!!🎉
Team window girl! She was NOT lying!!!!
Team Jo here too. I want to read the other books in the Little Women series. Those Nerds gummies are my jam. Never heard of cookie dough bites? Maybe we don't have them in Canada. Merry Christmas Eve!

Merry Christmas, Whitfam!
I also feel like Little Women wasn't worth it. I really liked the movie tho.
Happy Holidays Whitty, and the kitties! I love you guys! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
"remember that 40 year old weirdo from New York?" LMFAO 🤣
The Little Women movies (Both the 2019 and the Winona Ryder versions) are my comfort films. I love them so much. The book? Absolute trash. *makes note* the movie is better
Another movie that was better than the book - Pursuit of Happyness
And now I want to go to dollar tree to get a little treat too 🥹
So true! Let Jo be a solo spinster! 👏👏👏
As someone who reads a lot of classics, you are allowed to not like every one that you read. There have been lots of classics that I don’t like/don’t understand the hype. I am a Great Gatsby hater for example lol
my family also calls them red jays I have never had a unique experience 😂
I'm so glad you watched the movie!! it's one of my favorites 💜
you're welcome 😌

Whitney, did you take your meds? Cause it wasn't in the vlog 😜

girl, you must have been emotionally TIRED from feeling one end of the spectrum after reading to then watching the movie all in 1 day 😂
💜
Where did you get your mushroom sheets? I love them.. I haven't watched Little woman yet. I did go and see mufasa and I liked it, it was slow and the movie dragged. Bonnie I hope that you enjoy Mufasa
You need to drop the letterboxd
Loved the whole vlogmas. ❤ Also do you have a fable account đaybe? 👉🏻👈🏻

All I know about Little Women is what's in these vlogs and that Jo was supposed to end up on her own, independant (and low key lgbt+).
YAYYYYY❤❤❤❤❤
The 2019 movie has some great moments but overall I don’t think the story is that good, and I love classics.
'94! '94! '94!
Ohhhhh, I hope Make the Season Bright doesn't do you dirty. I loved the Delilah Green series (but I think you hated it??) so maybe we'll be opposites.
