An Evening with America's First Female Thunderbird Pilot
Maj. Nicole Malachowski
What's it like to be first? In March 2006, Maj. Nicole Malachowski debuted as the first woman pilot selected to fly in any American military demonstration team, in this case, the Air Force Demo Squadron better known as the Thunderbirds, flying F-16Cs. Major Malachowski's two seasons as Thunderbird #3 Right Wing broke another glass ceiling for women, but more importantly gave her a chance to do what she loves: fly with (and as) the best.
Major Malachowski saw her first air show at five years of age, started flying with the Civil Air Patrol at 12, and soloed at 16. She set her sights on becoming an Air Force pilot and never looked back. After excelling at the Air Force Academy she flew F-15Es all over the world including a tour in Iraq. Major Malachowski's no-nonsense character and superb flying ability have brought her high accolades throughout her Air Force career but most especially during the Thunderbird tour of duty where she flew as one of the team but endured the spotlight as the "first female." This proves that no matter how unrealistic the dreams of a five year old appear to others, those dreams can eventually be very real for that young child someday. I salute you, Nicole, for your dream and the realization of that dream. GO Air Force!
I saw her speak at a business conference. So outstanding! Really changed outlook on life turmoil and helped with team building.
I was a part of a police motorcycle escort detail taking the team from downtown San Antonio to Randolph. Before departure, at a downtown hotel, I met then Captain Malachowski in the hotel restaurant....I knew my daughter would like an autograph from a fighter pilot and asked the Captain for that. She was not yet a team member actually and was shadowing her #3. She graciously said yes, but asked me to leave the dining room with her to a private hallway. She told me that because she wasn't yet a Thunderbird yet, that it was frowned upon to be giving the autograph in the teams view, especially in a public setting. I thought she was so professional and just plain special! We chatted briefly about women fighter pilots, and she mentioned that the plane doesn't know who is flying it, and the Generals only care about the bombs being dropped accurately! Very impressive pilot, and officer! #3, herself and the team flight surgeon posed for a really colorful picture! She was in a regular green flight suit, the 'Team' members in bright red, and us cops in blue with helmets and boots. I've been privileged to escort and coordinate with the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels several visits. They are ALWAYS so professional, and humble!!! Bad Ass is obviously in there too!!!

I waited until nearly the end of your presentation for you to give close to adequate kudos to the enlisted gems that are the heart and soul of the military and your team. Their specialized training and countless hours of dedicated unrecognized service do not get the attention that they deserve. All my life I've been drawn to reading stories of various female pilots but have yet to meet one. Seeing you speak on this clip has given me this opportunity albeit remotely. I have found you to be (apart from very talented), humble and gracious. You have achieved success both as a pilot and as a person. Congratulations !

Great interview. I served in the USAF from 1983-1988. Had the privilege of serving with Col. Lloyd "Fig" Newton at the Pentagon. As I'm sure you are aware he was the first African American Thunderbird pilot and retired as a 4 Star General. You remind me of him, a trailblazer indeed. I would have loved to be on the Thunderbird team and would have been proud to be your crew chief. Thank you for your service. And thanks for all your inspiration. Best to you and yours!!

Pilots have different levels of comfort. Some pilots are uncomfortable flying in formation. Others consider tight formation flying to be no biggie. 🤠
