  • Middle-earth Role Playing who doesn't love the world of Tolkien from a role playing perspective. Did ICE get it right with the Rolemaster style system? Lets's have a look at what's in my collection.

Played a ton of this in the 80s-90s but haven't really played in about 20 years. But, after watching lots of review videos the past two years, I've decided to start a new MERP campaign, adding in a bit of Rolemaster material as well. Still the best Middle Earth RPG in my opinion.

Adaptability is the name of the game. Glad you enjoyed this game, wish I had bought more of the content in the day. Thanks for watching.

I found your video because while I have never played this game, I have been reading the sourcebooks as inspiration for my own games. Loved your delivery. Thanks for the content - subscribed!

MERP was incredibly well-supported. I have a fairly complete collection, and there are still a few holes yet to be filled. A comment on the art direction: The early MERP products enjoyed some very nice illustrations, particularly from Liz Danforth. Toward the end of the life of the series, however, they got some other guy to do most of their illustrations, which represented a radical departure from the Tolkienesque flavor of the game. The elves with Mohawk hair-dos and facial piercings bothered me so much I wrote to ICE to complain. The reply I received was annoyingly dismissive, disappointing given the quality I had come to expect from ICE. They eventually lost the license, and we got what I perceived to be a weedy replacement from some other company, whose illustrations relied on photographic stills from Peter Jackson's movies. Come to think of it, that same fate awaited the excellent Lord of the Rings collectible card game, whose art and flavor text was head, shoulders, and navel above the cheap product which replaced it. ='[.]'=

I agree on the artwork. Which LotR card game? I seem to recall the first one (Decipher was it?) was okay, I just came a small collection of them, but need to find someone to teach me the game. I did get the LCG version from FFG (again from another source) which is nice but very not Tolkienesqe. Might drag them out and do a video comparison of them in due course. Artwork only. I'm not a rules man. :) Thanks as always for watching.

@@TheDustedGameShelf The Middle-earth Collectible Card Game was released in '95 by ICE, and was the first Tolkien-related CCG. I never played it, but the artwork was great, and often simply stunning, while the flavor text meshed well with Tolkien's lore, even when it wasn't taken directly from his works. The Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game was released by Decipher in 2001, after ICE lost the rights, and was, in my opinion, a far inferior product, both in presentation and (as a retailer) in player interest. ='[.]'=

Bizarre to believe, rules-lite fan that I am, that this was my personal second rpg i ever owned/ played. Heheh
I’d encourage anyone and everyone to grab all of this stuff…..and then use whatever system they wish. The supplemental material and adventures are super…a bit outside the Prof’s purview and blah, blah, blah…. But still…easy to have fun whilst still in the “coloring book” lines in some way or another. Heh
Also…Angus McBride, Liz Danforth, Halloway and many others gifting us artistic atmosphere…and the maps are likewise wonderful!

Currently GMing a MERP game set in the early 4th age where the players are matched up against the remnants of Sauron's forces. One of the Blue Wizards of the East is intent on making trouble, and stepping into the gap given nature and power abhors a vacuum...

I read MERP but didn't play because what I played was the Tolkien Quest books, all 7 of them (I had 4 in Spanish and 3 in English) and those books said you could transform them into MERP but it was too difficult for me, plus I started using the Tolkien Quest books' system in a homebrew campaign with some friends. I used some MERP things too, the coin values, the maps, scenarios, monsters (tried to match the stats, terrible work) etc. Good times. I liked to see all the manuals here, maybe it's time for another terrible work.

I absolutely love MERP and still play it (my second favourite RPG of all time)! Unfortunately, most of my books were done in by flooding so I had to find another copy of the rulebook. I'll eventually get the modules and sourcebooks again but they're rather expensive so it'll be slow going. I've played RM as well (in fact, I often mix and match MERP and RM) and have always thought of MERP as being to RM what D&D Basic is to Advanced D&D.
