I feel that this footage is rare and I have not seen another film from this period that shows this kind of poverty etc. This is part of my archive but unfortunately, I do not know the filmmaker that originally shot it.

Without that smoke and struggle our ancestors endured we would not enjoy the decadent lives we live today.

Trouble is... Who was the struggle with? Well, my Grandpa, died 1965, would say it was against "The God dammed lying, stomach robbing rich". It's true we have food in the store and apartments don't fall down on their occupants tooo often. There's not much organized struggle like back then; no mass supported parties of socialism to provide a real political alternative to the Two Party Gimick. The Labor Unions are cut to the knee and 2022 Dems are acting like 1972 Republicans... After the 1968 Dem Convention anti-democracy and police riots, I always suspected they were joined at the money lusting hip... Take a hard look at today A presumption of continued "decadence" is in question. In fact a Great Depression 2.0 seems more likely. And hey Half-Orc Monk, you still alive four years on from your comment? My son's a WOW gamer. You a vid gamer or simply a half orc monk? :)

This should have so many more viewers. It is a great expose of American Poverty. It anticipates "Harvest of Shame," a 1960 documentary which revealed glaring rural poverty in America.

    "smoke makes prosperity"
t-thats prosperity? quite the optimism... they probably mean prosperity for the rich though, and as they said 'how does that make sense, with this'.
"might as well stay in the mills and call that home, just as fit to live in" wow
    incredible footage.

IKAROS 420 I guess the smoke meant to them that there was working being done, and work being done means that something might get better, that you might prosper.

If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket.

Excellent portrayal of the difficulties of the era in the mining sector, possibly WV or PA. The photography very much reminds me of the Depression Era snapshots by Bayard Wootten of out New Bern, NC. She did a lot with the impoverished people of the region. I don't know, however, if she did video or not. Much of her collection resides here at the Univ. of NC archives in Chapel Hill NC. Thanks for the video, David

I wonder how many of those kids in the beginning made it to an old age.

Point me in the right direction if I'm wrong, but, I don't see video media these days addressing poverty and homelessness with the quality of thought and powerful visual evidences that this Labor Union Strength and New Deal idea influenced excerpt represents. If I'm right that's part of our present problem with fixing our mounting human need problems.
Also early in the clip the views of heavily and dangerously board walk and stair access historic housing that I'll say is the fact based inspiration for similar housing/small business of the fishing town in "Popeye", the huge warm hearted fun live action film with Robin Williamson if you like that kind of thing.

I post videos from my collection. I do not have an unlimited number. I post the ones that I believe my audience will find most interesting. I try to do the best I can. I don't post videos for political or any other reasons except that they would be meaningful to at least some of my followers.
