Very interesting. It's great that this show was made at a time when many of the principal actors were still available to be interviewed. Thank you for this.

it's always amazed me that such a small country as Britain was able to rule most of the world for several centuries by sheer force of will

If the Japanese had taken India the locals would have had a taste of Japanese war morals they wouldn’t forget in a thousand years. British reign would have been child’s play compared to it.

Pakistan was designed by Churchill, Wavell, Attlee, Bevin to create a part of India where the British military would stay after independence to stop the Soviet expansion into the Middle East and in the Indian ocean. Jinnah had agreed to provide that facility. That is the reason British created Pakistan. Most Muslim leaders were against Jinnah and his demand for Pakistan but the British pushed them to Jinnah to create Pakistan at all costs. Costs were millions of death and millions of refugees. British got what it wanted. Pakistan joined Anglo-American military alliance in CENTO and SEATO.

Dipak Basu I believe you would want to exclude Clement Attlee from among this gang! Because he came in too late and even then , he didn't have much power

Attlee was convinced by Wavell that a base in Pakistan was needed to stop USSR to expand to the Middle east. Attlee send Mountbatten to divide India and to allow the British Army in Pakistan to take away Northern Kashmir from India. The British officer who invaded and occupied northern Kashmir for Pakistan, Major Brown, was honoured by Attlee with the OBE title.

We must not forget that in WW11 the Congress under Gandhi refused to support Churchill against Germany. The Muslim League under Jinnah supported Britain against Germany and so he was rewarded by the departing British by creating Pakistan.I agree that the West was obsessed with Communism and the Communist Revolution ever since the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia in 1919. The War of Intervention by the West in order to crush the Bolsheviks just shows how deep this aversion was and the realisation that the greatest threat to world capitalism came from a Red Russia. The Partition of India by following the old colonial-imperial policy of Divide and Rule came in handy in a fluid geo-political situation after the victories of the Red Army on their western front. Although , Britain and the USA were united in their hatred of the Soviet Union and Communism and its expansion , I do not think that was the only reason for the Partition of India. The Conservatives under Churchill wanted to punish India for betraying it in their war against Germany. Churchill lost the General Elections in 1945 but the Labour Party s policy towards India was even worse as they were even more hypocritical.

British antagonism and their fear of Russian and then Soviet Communist expansion after WWII was far from being a new threat. It was a new set of cards or chess pieces under new circumstances that had more players to geopolitics and stakes were higher. UK and Russia had been involved in sort of a century-long diplomatic, military chess match during much of the 19th century for eventual control over decaying, medieval Ottoman Empire's ME territories(Balkans, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Iran, Afghanistan, India, even Tibet in 1903 military expedition). Historians call this proto-Cold War "The Great Game". Competimg Imperial Russian/British interests even involved IMHO the outcome of US Civil War because UK and French desperately wanted to intervene on side of Confederacy to protect its considerable cotton interests but was prevented due to working-class protests and the fact that Czarist Russia instructed British that if they recognized South, they'd be at war and attack British North America(Canada) from naval and military bases in Alaska. Czarist Russia couldn't and wouldn't tolerate Britian further extending its economic interests into North America.
By the time Atlee's Labour took power, most of the major decisions regarding future independent India/Pakistani states had been put in place, unbreakable promises made that UK was too weak or bankrupt to avoid and also Atlee and US also knew that while Gandhi wasn't some Soviet-styled socialist or sympathizer, many Western observers also knew that many INC leaders, including Nehru had strong Soviet or Chinese sympathies or leanings.
India was apart of the Non-Aligned Movememt during the Cold War but it had a strong economic ties to USSR and it was perceived by Western intelligence agencies that by the time of Indira Gandhi was a bit of Soviet ally and also a ruthless autocrat(see India's Emergency period crisis), so partitioning India and Pakistan was a convenient move to counter-balance any future Soviet-Indo relationship the Kremlin might use to further its influence into South/Southeast Asia.

The first sentence is key: "India was home to more Muslims than any country on earth" That would still be true today if the OLD India was still intact: Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India. Muslims would have been a sizable minority in a united India but were afraid they would be dominated by the Hindus so they broke away. Suddenly, Islam was the basis of their nationality. The other unintended consequenses were a very violent partition between India and Pakistan, and later a terrible civil war in which Bangladesh broke away from Pakistan.

Look at Pakistan today a military dictatorship in all but name. Economic ruin with no prospects for growth. The most popular Pakistani leader Imran Khan and his political party are in jail because the pakistani military fears his popularity. The afgan Pashtuns are almost ready to wage war on Pakistan.
India is a forward looking nation that has economic growth, good leadership, and a stability.
The gap os only going to widen between India and Pakistan.

What else to expect from League leadership? You see, if MAJ had to expend so many words to convince chaps like Daulatana, a converted Rajput, you may guess the level of grey matter in League ranks 😂
Besides, I cannot commit the blasphemy of claiming Shuakat Hayat to be a Butparast with MAJ as his Khuda 😉

Curious how he mentions hindu's, muslims, and then cochin jews get the exact same rights at the 24 minute mark, when jews made up .007% of india at that time, and cochin jews, coupled with malabar, are exactly .00098% of the total population of India in 1941. The same Cochin jews gave birth to the Sassoon family which created drug wars all over the world, conquest of Afghanistan, and multiple other conflicts! Curious how a group that is literally in the tens of thousands in representation to the indian, gets equal rights when it is this small and has no public representation in india!

Pakistan was created to serve the interests of UK & America to counter Russia after WW2..
As Indian Congress leaders (especially Nehru)were having socialist mindset & were close to Russia.
Jinnah (Muslim League) was completely backed by British so that the new state of Pakistan can be used to counter Russia which was also influencing the Afghanistan rulers ..
It was the revolt of India Navy & Army which made British run away in hurry...
It was failure of Indian leaders ( Gandhi,Nehru) who completely failed to keep India United..
