Just finished watching Bladerunner, so imagine my face at the 21:00 mark. Entering Vengelis territory with that massive verb, and the way you sneak in extra pseudo-voices because of it. Wonderful stuff! Thanks for sharing.
I've got mine since a month or so and the mailman delivered a beatstep pro this afternoon. Ran into the midi issue as well, worked around it by taking an old aux cable, ripping one of the jackplugs off and soldering it back together with the left and right cables switched. Works just fine now!
I really don't understand? I have a midi adaptor into midi in no issues. Nick is running his keyboard into sound out on the NTS-1 makes no sense to me?
I got one as an external effects unit for my semi modular synths and I'm absolutely loving it. The delays and reverbs both sound amazing. Then there is the synth itself. .. jeez this little guy packs an awful lot into a tiny box. So good, well done Korg
A couple days ago, Tim Shoebridge released a user oscillator called CHORD specifically for the NTS-1 that splits the oscillator into 4 parts, allowing it to play a variety of chord shapes. He's also written a few other great oscillators for this line of synths. Might be an interesting guest for SonicTalk! P.S. I've been using the Teenage Engineering brand midi dongles with this and they work.Great video!
Korg/Line6 is Type "A"; Arturia/Novation is Type "B"; and there are a few odd balls ( IK Multimedia) wired as type "B" but with a 2.5mm TRS instead of 3.5mm. It's madness the MIDI association should have squashed years ago.
Just got my nts1 two days ago but the kit was missing the two sliver side panels but iv made two that will do to keep the dust out till I get the case from Etsy ...its a cool little synth iv not had the chance to put it into a midi controller yet
Nick is not just a techie, you can tell he has absolute musicality flowing through him, and seems like a thoroughly nice bloke too! I’ve always used his reviews as the final say in my buying gear. A long time listener/viewer that wants to say thank you so much for all the content you’ve provided over the years, Anyone know what names he records his own material under?
Great video! I received mine almost three weeks ago, but haven’t put it together yet. After watching the video I need to get on it. Along with the device I also ordered the Korg Volca nubass Vacuum Tube Synth and MODAL SKULPT AND Craft Synth which have been keeping me occupied.
Great demo Nick. The NTS-1 is an amazing little instrument and you didn't even get to showing us some of the amazing 3rd party custom oscillators and effects available.
This might be worth a noting here: the NTS has a 15 minute shut off timer. If you'd like to use it as a signal processer to add fx you'll have to baby sit it, or it will shut off on you mid-song.
Yep. I've been thinking of making a simple Max For Live thing that sends some CC value every 10 minutes that doesn't affect the sound - perhaps "tremolo rate", since I don't really use the tremolo. But this really needs to be fixed by Korg in a firmware update.
Could anyone enlighten me on what he meant about connecting the Keystep to the NTS-1 via midi? I gather that Korg uses Type A and that Arturia uses Type B. But this has left me wondering what on earth I need. Presumably a TRS to (female) Midi adapter Type A to connect into the NTS-1 and a midi cable (both ends male) to connect into the Midi Out of the Arturia, or could I get a TRS to (male) midi cable to connect into the Keystep if it was the right type?
Yeah you need a type A midi to trs adapter. And it's worth getting a decent one. I bought a cheap one on Amazon and it didn't work. Then I got the 0Coast one and it works great
This is a really neat piece of gear for the price. You can get some downright Vangelis sounds from it. Not thrilled about the midi interface though. Without the proper cable you can't unlock the full potential. I'd also like to see a bit more controls on the front panel, being able to only access them through a DAW is a bit of a drawback. Otherwise it's a good little instrument. Sounds incredible. Great video, Nick! Loved the actual how-to assembly part of it. Stay safe!
you can actually access to the same controls via midi/daw than in the front panel (with button combos, of course). The real downside is not being able to access via midi to the custom osc/fx submenus
@@promisingyoungster2727 It would be nice to see a better interface for those who like a hardware/DAW-less setup is all. Otherwise, sonically it sound amazing!
There is no lack of MIDI connectivity. It supports MIDI input and output over both USB and TRS. The TRS MIDI jack is Type A, recently chosen as the official standard. If you have other devices with a Type A jack (for example, the Novation LaunchKey Mini mk3), you can connect it directly with any TRS 1/8" cable. You can get a TRS-to-DIN adapter for a few bucks that will let you connect it with any standard DIN MIDI cable.
An absolute dealbreaker for me is that the NTS-1 after 15 minutes will enter sleepmode and can not be turn off. Not interesting anymore for using as effect pedal.
yes!! So frustrating that there isn't a global setting to switch this off. I emailed Korg about this and got no response. This issue and the build quality mean that the MS-70CDR is still the budget multi-fx of choice I think.
Yeah, this drives me nuts every day. You can just press the Osc button to wake it up, but it outputs a super loud pop when I do that. Really hope they add a setting for this.
Hey, Nick! Nice video! I'm thinking of getting one of these grumpy babies. I didn't quite understand which type of MIDI adaptor is needed to connect it. I know each brand developed different wirings for their TS to MIDI DIN adaptors and the MIDI Association standarized them, but not everyone follows the rules. Do you know which brand of adaptor is right for the Nu tek? Thank you!
can it take a mini-TS-jack external input and still output a stereo fx on mini-TRS- splitter? anyone used it to process modular, - like, what kind of headroom does it have on a practical level? thanks
Its not possible to have the FX only output if you are using the internal voice, no. Headroom is not great, you do need to be careful with the input level
