    Is it possible to test run this motor using normal 3 phase supply or need a drive to make it run.

      Hello sir, a synchronous motor is characterized by the same rotation of the magnetic field of the armature and the rotor. Thus, both fields have the same rate of synchronous rotation. Using the formula: p (number of pairs of magnetic poles) = (f * 60)/RPM = (87.5 Hz * 60)/1750 = 5250/1750 = 3. Thus, there are 3 pairs of magnetic poles in the armature circuit and 3 pairs per rotor.
      You cannot power a synchronous motor directly from the 347 VAC power grid because the motor will not start. It has a large inertia of the magnetized rotor. Such a motor must be powered by a suitable frequency converter that controls rotation, load current and rotor position. When the load is too high, the synchronous rotation would be disturbed, which would lead to its vibrations and, consequently, overheating of the winding if the protection did not work. For this reason, these types of motors must have dedicated controllers.

      @@ZygmuntKiliszewski thanks for the explanation, i am bit confused, i tried turning on a small synchronous motor after repair, it has three phase 6 pole winding , having permanent magnets inside laminated rotor, i dont have the drive so tried with regular 60hz power , when energised ,rotor magnetically lock with stator with an oscillating motion like no rotating field is created.

      @@harishharikumar1543 From your description, I conclude that it is a typical three-phase synchronous motor based on the current of the sine function. These motors require specialized drivers. If you enter its technical symbol in the Internet search engine or the Manufacturer, it will quickly find it. If this was not possible, I recommend the easy-to-use and cheap XSY - AT 1 frequency converter.
