I think the biggest reason so many people are bothered by wind turbines is that most of them live in rural areas and aren't used to constant noises. Even though the sound is barely perceptible, it seems worse when you're not used to hearing infrasound (technically feeling, as humans can't hear sounds below ~18 Hz).
As someone who lives less than a mile from a regional airport, I'd kill to live somewhere where the only sounds I have to hear are birds, wind, and turbines.

This is not accurate. I live not far from wind farm and I hear constant buzzing noise, as if I was on a sea cruiser. It didn’t bother me at the beginning but after a while it gets to you. Additionally they measured and recorded one wind turbine. It is very seldom there is only one. On our closest wind farm there is 8 and often there are even more. I am going to move soon although there are people in our village who live here their whole life and it doesn’t bother them.

I would like to add to my last comment. I talked myself into ignoring it. Someone said to me that people live in towns with hums of highways or on the beach with waves making noise etc. so why do I want to leave such a nice place. I have an old house in a village , which stands by the lake so decided to get used to the noise. It also depends which way the wind blows. I walk my dogs about 3km away from our wind turbines (16 of them) and it makes a big difference in the level of noise. So if you are of relaxed disposition, it is possible to live with it.

These wind generator produce low frequency noise, it may not sounds loud but people can still feel them within miles. The problem with current decibel noise rating system does not count or under-rated low frequency noise. Low frequency noise may not be heard but it is like your hi-fi bass and can be felt from far distance. High frequency noise in contrast fade away fast within small distance. I am sorry to hear your situation, it is really frustrate and bad for the health. Try active noise cancelling head phone and see if that work out for you. Probably a bit late at replying to this message but 3dB is perceived as a noticeable difference in level, 3dB is also a doubling of sound pressure so 64 turbines would be 3dB x 6 louder (18dB increase) the acoustic consultants would have assessed whether that level increase met the appropriate legislative levels based on the baseline background sound level. It's not quite as simple to say it's that much louder though because of the attenuation of level at distance and any other effects the turbines are subject to. ETSU-97 is the guidance if you wanted to look into it and during an assessment acoustic consultants have to factor in cumulative effects of other nearby wind farms

But at 4000ft (1+ km) the sound becomes negligible, and the sound of your AC or even a ceiling fan or a flapping flagpost cable will annoy your much much earlier. Exactly. The sound levels off to the side of the rotating blades are nowhere near as loud as behind the blades. And it is actually louder at some distance than it is close to the turbine. Videos like this are paid for by wind developers to convince politicians that wind projects are wonderful. The fact is that the entire area of a wind project becomes a de facto heavy industrial zone. Industrial zones are not good places for people to live and are always kept separate from residential areas in zoning law. Non-compliant use for industrial purposes is not to be allowed in ag/residential areas without full consent of residents.

Recording at different aspects and in the midst of a wind farm would be very interesting indeed. City dwellers take a while to hear discrete sounds when away from what they are used to. I haven't heard a wind farm in real time but seeing them in motion I don't think they are as quiet as the developers claim. When each blade passes the post supporting the whole thing it has to disturb the flow of air creating noise at a very low freq. that you would feel rather than hear. If there is any pitting and erosion on the leading edges and tips of the blades that would cause noise in varying freq. bands depending on the size of the pitting too.

Atlantes Kyle it is as if you were on a luxury sea cruise. I was on Queen Mary 2, 4th deck which, apparently is least noisy, so it is a very similar experience. Or, like some people have furnaces or hot air pumps in the cellar which run most of the time. It is quieter than aircon. It is not bad and bearable but when they are switched off for maintenance one can appreciate the lack of it. The closest turbine from our wind farm is about 2,5km away from my house. I think that the noise has an impact on my house (which is very old) too and tiniest parts of it vibrate making an extra noise.

The thing is this video failed to consider the sound from various angles. From experience in a wind farm near me, the sound is loudest BEHIND the blades and least audible edge on, like in this video. I filmed this video 10 years ago when the wind farm was brand new. The turbine in the video is a Siemens SWT-2.3-108. It is now 10 years old and likely noisier. This video was recorded about 150 meters away and with the simplest of setups it capture ambient noise and traffic. ua-cam.com/video/6HPuvRBUm3M/v-deo.html

  • @HenkJanDrums

The enclose of the mic is huge. Very big and very much damping. In a studio this would result in muffled sounds. No quality vocal or instrument recording can be made with such a setup.
Of course protection for wind noises is required. Pop filters are normally used for vocals . I would suggest making a pop filter around the mic. With enough distance to the mic. Why not measure at a stormy or hurricane day? Than wind noise is biggest! It is like measuring a drummer who plays with brushes and in the next measurement you hear a jazz drummer playing with light sticks. That method is OK if you stop the wind turbines when wind is above medium breeze. Great ...people around the windturbine will be happy! But ...at high speeds windturbines deliver most energy and noise. Windturbines are only stopped when very extreme winds are avaialable. So we wanna hear the heavy metal drummer who can shake the roofs! Or the storms that shake the windturbines . For sure not pretty weather to do measurements ...i may rain and be cold as well.
Yes ...than that enclosure probably will be required and perhaps still generate enough signal.
Second ...very nice to have windpark far away from houses as shown. Distances from 10 times tip height or more have almost no serious consequences for people around the windtrubine. However for instance in the overcrowded Netherlands distances from 700m , 500 m or even 300m or less also are reported . And ...windturbines are getting bigger and bigger and more and more. See links with installed heights, powers and noise they generated. Official government data.

However windturbine noise is registrated in dB(A) and not in dB(C) or better ...without using a damping
    nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wegingscurves_A_en_C
The damping/correction is so huge that below 125 Hz no realistic data are presented with dB(A) settings. at 50 Hz already 30.2 dB damping is supplied and at 20 H 50.5 dB correction is applied with dB(A) dB(C) damping is 1.3 dB at 50 Hz and 6.2 dB at 20 Hz . A huge improvement over dB(A) measurements. However ...still damping (weighting) is applied.
To reproduce the sound at home the play back volume should be at the same dB as when recorded.

I regularly hiking hours near the Altamont Pass windfarm with 2MW turbines, the trail goes as close as 1300 ft (400 m), and nothing happened to my ears so far. I'd certainly avoid living *so* close, much like I'd avoid living under a big airport glideslope. But at 4000ft (1+ km) the sound becomes negligible, and the sound of your AC or even a ceiling fan or a flapping flagpost cable will annoy your much much earlier. If one can't bear a noise of a ceiling fan in the night, their life was miserable even before windfarms.

  • @p.i.hublou3885

This is not relevant for other wind turbines.
I lived off grid in Portugal and couldn't get used to the near permanent noise of 4 nearby wind turbines. It sounded like an jet plane coming over neither too low to be upfront but low enough to make you turn your head. Different shapes of blades might affect the noise output.
The WHO has now recognised the noise (some) wind turbines make as a health hazard. A couple won in November 2021 financial compensation from a wind turbine corporation for the health issues they suffered caused by constant exposure to the noise they make.

City dwellers often live near highways or busy streets, which can be loud. I know how loud: I've lived near a major street and a mall for a few years. For over a decade I lived near a train yard. Train yards are quite loud too, making loud CRASHBANG noises at unpredictable intervals. You get used to it, to such an extent that after a while you don't even notice it, even when you're trying to sleep.
My hearing is good for my age: I could hear the whine of a dying power supply for a sign when the technicians couldn't. For most of the video, I could not hear the wind turbines. When we got close enough for me to hear it I found the sound unremarkable, not quite soothing, but not aggravating.
If I had a house of my own, and enough cash, I'd have solar panels and a nice wind turbine of some kind. If it were an option (legally, it isn't) I'd 100% have a personal thorium nuclear reactor or something, done right they can be incredibly safe and nigh-impossible to screw up. Just to be clear, I'm not saying that wind power has NO drawbacks, because it does have a few. I'm just pointing out that some of the negative comments I'm seeing below... just don't make sense to me.
