Finally a logical list. People hate on part 2 Lot but I always thought it was decent and the scariest makeup job. I always have a hard time deciding if I like part 1 or 3 best but part 2 is right behind them because he was just so mean spirited in that one. Love it.
I agree with you on the part you said Freddy has a personality being he speaks in contrast of Jason , Michael Myers and Leatherface. He has his own dark humor personality similar to Chucky if you ask me.
Here's mine: 1. Part 2 (Definitely the scariest looking. The red eyes, the teeth, and the tight boney appearance. Definitely looks like a real burnt victim with the skin tightened and pale. It was what the remake tried to do. And yet made him evil as hell. 2. The original (I love this one almost equally in a different way. While part 2 looked liked years of crispy scars. The original looks fresh and glossy. Shiny and blacken marks. His ear has a hole in it and one little bit of his hair is showing in his back. And also looks angry looking. Phenomenal.) 3. New Nightmare (What a badass redesign. But it's not entirely number one best. I love the tench coat and love the idea of making his scars split skin but the same time. It looks a bit cartoony without all the chaotic details in the scaring. Though his teeth look nice and more natural shapped and his grey contacts look so good. The glove is nice and looks like the original's poster. He looks buff and muscular as hell. But I don't feel like the costume fits well with the more realistic tone New Nightmare was aiming for. Like the leather pants is too much but it looks cool in that 90s redesign way. Wes had admitted he regretted changing Freddy's look. I'm not sure if fans were disappointed with the changes but IMO, he certainly looks more creepy.) 4. Part 3 (I think it's a very iconic design and his face is more flexible and he looks like he has more expression than the next one. I love the melted cheese look and how the colors pop.) 5. Part 4 (This one is the most iconic next to part 2 but something is just looks a little off. It does have the cheek bones and the sunken eyes which was what Yagher tried to improve but I think the shape of the head looks werid and the colors look washed out. His hat and sweater is also too clean unlike part 3 where it looks gritty and dirty. But overall it's the last good one.) 6. Part 5 (Pretty awful. He looks alright in the church, the shadows with the black eyes fits the Gothic tone part 5 had and looks like a burnt Nosferatu but he smiles like a dumbass in this one a lot. Apparently David Miller said he wanted the makeup to look "aged and mire weathered" which if he wanted to do that, why have LESS makeup? They should make him look like New Nightmare with split skin, more tattered clothes and a more broken up glove or a whole new design. Not something that looks like my Halloween mask from Party City. I am sorry Mr. England thst you had to wearing that everyday on set. But still looks better than Freddy's Dead.) 7. Freddy vs Jason (Overrated as hell. I hate the colors, I hate the lack of details in the skin, the scars are too deeply red and look like polka-dots. It's like the dollar store version of part 3. Then I found out the makeup was by the guy who did Jason Takes Manhattan which explains everything. His teeth look like Austin Powers's too and I HATE how his brows are too high. Compare that to New Nightmare where he looks angry af. However the demon makeup looks is amazing. A shame that wasn't his main look because he looks frightening.) 8. Freddy's Dead (Too smooth, too shiny, too pink, and too rubbery. His scars look like blisters or a rash but not burns. He also looks really csrtoony like a Power Rangers villain but the shape of the head look good. This was originally used for the second season for the Freddy show but it should be a make for TV mask. David Miller. Shame on you.) 9. Remake (Lack of imagination. Hardly any scars but on his left cheek, buck teeth, bubble lips, covered in too much CGI, and looks like a Lion and not scary or even all that gross looking. I'm aware he's supposed to look like a real burnt victim but part 1 and 2 look like real ones in comparison. They should have made him look like what Wes Craven originally wanted Freddy to look like. (skull revealing, hole in his cheek, and pus oozing out his scars). But it looks like he can barley talk in it and is just a hot mess. If it was leaked now, fans would've demanded to the filmmakers to delay the movie and fix it.)
Yes! Could'nt agree more with that list! Part 2 Make up was phenomenal! In fact part 2 was my first nightmare movie and the look of Freddy was really unsettling. It was SO good and frankly I am not ashamed to say that I am a massive fan of part 2!
I've also always enjoyed Freddy's Revenge. It'a a solid horror movie with decent acting. Although, I understand some of the critique. A nightmare on elm street 1 will always be far superior. And aything after Freddy's Revenge doesn't feel like a horror movie.
I think part 3/4 is the most iconic as it was around this time that the popularity was at its height…..I remember Freddy being on mtv, cereal boxes etc……but part 2 and part 1 are the most scary and my favourite looks for the character!
My favorite version of Freddy was from “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge.” He looked mean and I loved that the knives came out of his fingers. It was just creepy and different than the others.
I liked the look from the first Nightmare on Elm Street. I think, because it was the first time seeing the character, it made a strong impression. A New Nightmare is my second favorite, because it felt very demonic.
Absolutely agree with you about the Part 2 makeup 100% Chris. Kevin Yagher did an incredible job creating a truly beautiful piece of work, which is even more amazing when you discover that he was still a teenager when he did it. I remember reading an interview with David Miller in Fangoria around the time of Part 5 and he was saying that he really didn't like the Part 2 makeup because he thought it was too smooth, which is kind of ironic when you see the makeup he did for Part 5. For me, Millers makeups always looked rubbery and lacked detail, whereas Yaghers had so much depth to it. I never get tired of looking at the Part 2 makeup because everything about it is perfect. I believe it was Yagher who put contact lenses on Robert England for the first time on that film and gave him those amazing teeth. Watching your video, it's kind of startling to see just how much the makeup changed over the years, so I definitely agree with your ratings.
I'll just go ahead and say it... Doug Jones needs to be the next Freddy Kruger. Since Robert Englund most likely will never be returning as Freddy Krueger, I'd love to see a Doug Jones step into the nightmare shoes. Especially since Doug is an amazing character actor who loves wearing prosthetics and becomes the character.
Doug Jones is much too tall and much too wispy and thin to play freddy. His physicality is all wrong for this part. I'd 100% prefer to see the rumor of Kevin Bacon playing the part come true.
@@scottm8285 Ii total understand where people are coming from by saying they want Kevin Bacon. But, unfortunately, it's probably never going to happen. Yeah, Bacon would have been a good choice for Freddy like 15 or 20 years ago, but now he's a bit old for the part and don't think he'd look that good under all the makeup.
I know where your heads at because he’s an amazing costume/makeup/character actor, but i don’t think he fits the mentality role of Freddy. Need someone a little funnier/crazier, almost like a sadistic jim Carrey

Freddy’s Revenge (part 2) will always be my absolute favorite makeup but I will say I was disappointed when you “house cleaned” Demon Freddy from FVJ! That was such a good one too! Obviously, hyper-stylized but still so evil and terrifying
I heard another UA-camr say that the Freddy's Dead makeup looked like they just stretched bubble gum over his face. That struck me as a great way to describe it...
I absolutely agree with your number one! The facial expressions of Freddy in part 2 are really creepy and gave me the shivers when i was a kid. This is the face of pure horror.
My favorite make-up is the Part 4 look. He looks so grungy and dirty, not to mention ticked off! I also love the Part 2 look and I have a soft spot for the Vs. look.
Freddys eyes on part 2 compliments the naked up so fucking well. They should of kept freddys eyes like this all the way thru series. That would of been bad ass.
The part 5 makeup that you speak of, was actually intended probably from the script where they were trying to make Freddy look old and decrepit, which ultimately was not the direction of the script they went for. But I think was the makeup effect they still wanted to achieve
One thing I do love about Dream Child's makeup is that he looks like Nosferatu in places. Also, the director tried SO hard to make something cool. I loved seeing his storyboards and artwork.
I understand what they were going for. A realistic look would be gnarly, but, the biggest problem with how they did it was that they did more of a healed/healing burn victim. If his makeup would've started out like the original and became more healed with every soul he takes it would make sense.
Just discovered your channel and really enjoyed the video! I appreciate the thought and consideration you put in, even if I don't agree with every ranking or critique, but hey, it's subjective! For what it's worth, here's my list, best to worst: 1. Nightmare 4 - In my opinion, the best version of the Yagher make-ups. (He did have 3 movies to iterate and perfect it.) Detailed, great color, texture, balance between realism and stylized design, and thin enough for Robert's performance to shine through brilliantly. 2. Nightmare 3 - As you said, a great hybrid of the Part 2 and Part 4 make-ups with some of the strengths of both, but more refined and confidently naturalistic, and thus less exaggerated than Part 2. 3. Freddy vs. Jason - As far as redesigns go, this is a strong one. The amped-up, high contrast colors, textures and wounds, and slightly more "designed" features work well for the over-the-top, stylized tone of the movie. 4. Nightmare 2 - A huge step in the right direction. Simplifies Miller's original design and introduces or refines many of Freddy's most iconic features, including the "witchy" look. 5. Nightmare 1 - Miller's ambitious, but over-engineered make-up is commendable in theory, but rough and chunky in execution. There's a reason Freddy is mostly in shadow in this movie. The multi-layer effect doesn't really read onscreen and just ends up obscuring Robert's performance. 6. New Nightmare - This is another Miller design that I like in theory, but not execution. The torn skin effect looks stark and overly designed and unnatural and the revealed muscle structure is anatomically inaccurate and too monochromatic. 7. Nightmare Remake - Yet another interesting idea that didn't work out. At least this time, it wasn't due to poor/rushed execution. As you said, it softens/reduces too many facial features and while the result is naturalistic and unsettling, this version of Freddy just can't emote in ways we expect from the character, not to mention that most of his defining witchy features are gone, so he just doesn't look enough like Freddy. 8. Freddy's Dead - We're in agreement here. These next two designs are just bad for all the reasons you said and more, but Freddy's Dead was an improvement over Dreamchild. Some of the detail and bone structure have returned and the wound detail and paint application are more pronounced and no old-man jowls! 9. Nightmare 5 - Rubbery-looking, lacking detail in both the sculpt and paint application, and he has jowls for some reason, making Freddy looks like a very wrinkly old man at times.
The make up design from Freddy's Revenge is my favorite too, he's the most sinister looking in that movie I'd have to say. Also I was never a fan of the whole demon Freddy from Freddy VS Jason.
Having gotten to wear makeup that came from the same molds that created the makeup Robert wore on the set of the film...I still have a soft spot for that makeup from "Nightmare 5".
That doesn't make sense. The makeup was in latex appliances and blended in after being sculpted on the mold of his head. You couldn't have worn the exact same makeup..unless you worded that wrong.
@@FatLadyKiller I guess I misspoke- I wore the same makeup from the same molds that created the makeup Robert wore for ANOES5- we got the pieces straight from David Miller himself. Thanks!
I recently watched them in order and I gotta say I initially overlooked the makeup in the 2nd because it was my least favorite of the series but looking back the makeup was actually pretty cool lol. The main thing I noticed when watching was the difference between the glossy vs matte looks and personality. Great idea ranking them, really enjoyed watching 🙂
@@damien1781 I do, I think it makes sense to look different because it’s actually an evil entity that takes Freddy’s appearance. The scene towards the end when he turns into a more demonic looking figure with horns as he’s burning looks pretty cool too.
@@damien1781 Yeah I think the bone look was a good choice and again makes sense that it’s not actually Freddy, like the entity morphed it’s own body or something and looks more “organic” lol.

The original is #1 for me. Its fresh and looks like huuuge deep blisters that burst. New nightmare is #2 to me. looks very demonic. As if "something" is mascarading around. And part 2 is my #3. Yes it looks gross. But comes in at 3 for me. Love your vids Chris!! Always a joy to watch your stuff. 🍻
No one asked me but my ranking for Freddy’s makeup is 1: pt 1 2: Freddy’s revenge 3: Freddy vs Jason 4: Dream master 5: Dream warriors 6: New nightmare 7:Freddy’s dead 8: Dream child 9:And Remake
You know, I've only just noticed that if you were to change the colour of Jackie Earle Haley's makeup design to blue, he actually somewhat resembles one of the Na'Vi from Avatar! (See: 1:49) ....Oh, and thanks for 12:26. I'll never look at a pepperoni pizza quite the same way again.
Great list and appreciate the rationale for each selection. I personally have to go with the OG from pt 1 but pt 2 is a close 2nd. You are spot on regarding some of the later sequels getting lazy and looking like random masks from a Halloween store...bigger budgets but worse makeup? Wild.
To this day the original A Nightmare on Elm street is my all time favorite horror film. I was 12 or thirteen when I first saw it and it was both frightening and fascinating. Mostly because I do not have nightmares so the concept fascinates me even more.
Hi chris! Since you did halloween and nightmare on elm street, is there any chance o a series ranking the looks of other horror icons (chucky, jason, leather face, etc)? Looking forward to your content
Awsome video 100% agree have you thought about doing the same for the gloves I know to most people the all the gloves might look the same but in my opinion each individual glove has it's own look and personality just like the make up
Great video! My order is close to yours but I would do Part 1 and Part 2 as a tie. I’d absolutely like to get a silicone mask of Part 2 directly from Kevin Yagher if he made a silicone mask version.
What's funny is that I think the original film and Dream Warriors makeup looks better in the behind the scenes pics, but in the actual film with the dim lighting, the Freddy's Revenge makeup is the best, and by far the scariest. If there's ever another film with Robert, I would love for the makeup to be a combo of 1 and 2.
Right on, Part 2 all the way!! It's my absolute favourite ANOES.. scariest scenes are: poor Grady cornered in his bedroom, with Freddy's beyond sinister smirk, just nodding his head as he approaches, as if to say 'ohhh yesss.. this is happening' The school bus scenes, & those flippin hounds from hell mutant guard dogs with human faces as Lisa enters that abandoned plant, 2nd last scene.
I agree, part 2 has the best makeup and I even use the exact same screenshot to prove my point, he's terrifying! I'd leave the red eyes though but that's just me, I love Robert Englund's natural green eyes too much! Part 6 is my least favorite, it looks too "rubbery" but the flat lighting certainly doesn't help. The remake doesn't count, that's not Freddy.
As a 10 year old Freddy vs Jason was my introduction to both characters as a young kid I hated horror films but my older brother convinced me to watch it with him and it scared the shit out of me for a month it fucked with my head. Fast forward 18 years I can't get enough of them in Highschool idk if I'm the only person but we all have that one movie that we can put on every night before bed and go to sleep too but for a good 3 months on school nights I would go to sleep to that movie. Crazy how things change I think the moral is things we are scared of if we face those fears after it's over we realize that we really enjoyed the thing we were afraid off. Thanks for the hours off enjoyment Fred and all my other horror icons!
I saw every nightmare at the theater from part 2 on. I agree the second had the best makeup. I could never figure out why they couldn't match the greatness of that makeup ever again.
I loved the make up on the first one because his face always looked moist, like he’d just been burned and the plasma was leaking out of his face. Part 2 make up is the most terrifying. The eyes are harrowing
Agreed they took Freddie's personality in the remake . You put what I've been thinking into words dude. I wanna like it cause he's my favorite horror villain

I dont like 4:30 makeup cus it looks like a sausage troche and is too smooth. The part 2 (the one with red eyes, that was at the end of the video) feels the best for me and is associated with fried sausage's taste. The 4:30 associates with a sausage troche, as i said already

The part 5 makeup that you speak of, was actually intended probably from the script where they were trying to make Freddy look old and decrepit, which ultimately was not the direction of the script they went for. But I think was the makeup effect they still wanted to achieve
The Vs and the 2010 Remake are my favorite Freddy looks
One thing I do love about Dream Child's makeup is that he looks like Nosferatu in places.
Also, the director tried SO hard to make something cool. I loved seeing his storyboards and artwork.
Man, Demon Freddy looks cool!! Easily my top pick for his design
I actually loved the realistic look of the makeup from the remake
Same he reminds me of a Hiroshima survivor
Same
I do too because they wanted him to look at a actual real life burned victim
I understand what they were going for. A realistic look would be gnarly, but, the biggest problem with how they did it was that they did more of a healed/healing burn victim.
If his makeup would've started out like the original and became more healed with every soul he takes it would make sense.
@@mattcieszlak3379 Healed/healing?! He was missing half of his face!
I agree, Freddy's revenge is the most awesome makeup out of them all.
Just discovered your channel and really enjoyed the video! I appreciate the thought and consideration you put in, even if I don't agree with every ranking or critique, but hey, it's subjective! For what it's worth, here's my list, best to worst:
Idk man, at least Haley’s Freddy make-up looks more menacing than Englund’s Freddy’s Dead one.
The make up design from Freddy's Revenge is my favorite too, he's the most sinister looking in that movie I'd have to say. Also I was never a fan of the whole demon Freddy from Freddy VS Jason.
Great ranking vid. I feel I get distracted by the quality of the movie being linked with the look. Great to separate them based the look alone
Having gotten to wear makeup that came from the same molds that created the makeup Robert wore on the set of the film...I still have a soft spot for that makeup from "Nightmare 5".
How was that?? Did it feel weird wearing it??
That doesn't make sense. The makeup was in latex appliances and blended in after being sculpted on the mold of his head. You couldn't have worn the exact same makeup..unless you worded that wrong.
@@FatLadyKiller I guess I misspoke- I wore the same makeup from the same molds that created the makeup Robert wore for ANOES5- we got the pieces straight from David Miller himself. Thanks!
@@MissAlmostFine it was amazing and an honor. Not weird at all.
Hmmm you sure about that?
Gotta say the demon one from Freddy vs Jason is the best one. Wish he looked like that the entire movie
Loving these videos and your opinions, I'd like to hear your rankings on the movies themselves
deffinatly part two is the best i agree, love the witchy look
OMG that 3D poster idea is amazing!!!
Did you like new nightmares makeup?
@@damien1781 I do, I think it makes sense to look different because it’s actually an evil entity that takes Freddy’s appearance. The scene towards the end when he turns into a more demonic looking figure with horns as he’s burning looks pretty cool too.
@@starseedwarrior9240 hell yeah man, I really loved the makeup and the new meaty glove they gave him.
@@damien1781 Yeah I think the bone look was a good choice and again makes sense that it’s not actually Freddy, like the entity morphed it’s own body or something and looks more “organic” lol.
@@damien1781 what are you’re favorite movies? Mine are 1,3,6 and new nightmare. 6 is pretty silly, he’s pretty much evil bugs bunny at some points lol but I still like it for some reason. I guess it’s the cast and setting.
I'm not going to lie, I really enjoyed Jackie Earl Haley as Freddy. That script was terrible but I loved him as Freddy
No one asked me but my ranking for Freddy’s makeup is
1: pt 1
2: Freddy’s revenge
3: Freddy vs Jason
4: Dream master
5: Dream warriors
6: New nightmare
7:Freddy’s dead
8: Dream child
9:And Remake
Man it's really been 11 years since we've had a nightmare on ELm Street movie
Another one of the things that makes the Part 2 make-up so good is how wet it is. It looks so much meatier and just looks cool
You know, I've only just noticed that if you were to change the colour of Jackie Earle Haley's makeup design to blue, he actually somewhat resembles one of the Na'Vi from Avatar! (See: 1:49)
....Oh, and thanks for 12:26. I'll never look at a pepperoni pizza quite the same way again.
Remake is actually one of the best without the CGI added
Saw this one #1 had to leave a dislike
@@kevinflores1307 literally no one asked. if you left a dislike, then you left a dislike. and it’s his opinion, nothing wrong with it.
@@xkosdarkness5794 go lay on a freeway
I always thought Part 2 was the best look
also!
Have you seen Paul Bailey's Freddy demo video on here? His makeup is pretty much perfect! Its amazing
Part 2 was the best, even his voice was more sinister
I’d say in part 2 he looked the most demonic and the best. He even acted more serious .
Agreed. It barely looked like Robert Englund in makeup. Part 3 is my second favorite.
1 and 2 were actual horror movies. Everyone after those were more comical horror.
Yes, part 2 has the best make-up then part 1. Perfect order
Robert Englund's best Freddy makeup is from Freddy's Revenge. And the worst is from the 2010 remake
Great list and appreciate the rationale for each selection. I personally have to go with the OG from pt 1 but pt 2 is a close 2nd.
You are spot on regarding some of the later sequels getting lazy and looking like random masks from a Halloween store...bigger budgets but worse makeup? Wild.
I honestly love the new nightmare freddy and the demon freddy from Freddy vs. Jason by far the two scariest versions there obviously darker.
New to this channel, love it , subscribing
I totally agree . Part 2 makeup was the best .
My favorite makeup was Dream Master. It was so frightening to me when I was a kid.
Done
The behind the scenes shot of when Chris showed the picture of Freddy, grinning in the remake, literally terrifies me
Now I want to see one on the gloves! Great job, man!
Your list is spot on in my opinion!
love everything you do and have lol. your top shelf goods brother. the greatest kerp doing your thing
Chris have you seen the dark ride Freddy masks???
They have a new part 2 that is amazing!!!
There is a NOES attraction? Where!?
Awsome video 100% agree have you thought about doing the same for the gloves I know to most people the all the gloves might look the same but in my opinion each individual glove has it's own look and personality just like the make up
Great video! My order is close to yours but I would do Part 1 and Part 2 as a tie. I’d absolutely like to get a silicone mask of Part 2 directly from Kevin Yagher if he made a silicone mask version.
Another great video. Keep up the great work 👍🏻
What's funny is that I think the original film and Dream Warriors makeup looks better in the behind the scenes pics, but in the actual film with the dim lighting, the Freddy's Revenge makeup is the best, and by far the scariest.
If there's ever another film with Robert, I would love for the makeup to be a combo of 1 and 2.
excellent list on the make-up for a horror Icon, which makes me wonder what your list of Jason's facial make-up from that series.
What i love about NOES fans is they arent like Halloween fans who always seem to vote h78 as number one in anything it’s irritating
I love the fact that you praised Jackie’s talent. What I’ve learned throughout the years is that : THERE’S no Freddy without Robert.
Part 2 was definitely scariest looking Freddy !
Tbh I think the remake design would be in my top 3
I actually like the 2010 reboot freddy makeup, I think it's creepy as hell
Right on, Part 2 all the way!! It's my absolute favourite ANOES.. scariest scenes are: poor Grady cornered in his bedroom, with Freddy's beyond sinister smirk, just nodding his head as he approaches, as if to say 'ohhh yesss.. this is happening' The school bus scenes, & those flippin hounds from hell mutant guard dogs with human faces as Lisa enters that abandoned plant, 2nd last scene.
Jackie did a great job of portraying Freddy!!
I'm loving this series! Very interesting and well researched! Have you thought about ranking the Jason looks next?
He has
I totally agree with your assertion that the part two make up was the best. For me is probably new nightmare after that. Good list.
You are all my children now! That was the best man :)
I saw every nightmare at the theater from part 2 on. I agree the second had the best makeup. I could never figure out why they couldn't match the greatness of that makeup ever again.
You ranked it exactly how I would rank it. Always said Part 2 was the best
Now you have to do the trilogy with Jason.
Freddy part 2 has the best make-up, best score, scariest Freddy…he was much darker and scarier.
New Nightmare is like the demon trying to mimic the burns but putting its own spin on it like a chameleon changing color.
I haven't been through all of your videos but how about all of Freddy's Glove designs video?
I loved the make up on the first one because his face always looked moist, like he’d just been burned and the plasma was leaking out of his face.
Part 2 make up is the most terrifying. The eyes are harrowing
oh the irony of a cera-ve commercial planted during this awesome vid. frederick didn't moisturize enough for sure.
Agreed they took Freddie's personality in the remake . You put what I've been thinking into words dude. I wanna like it cause he's my favorite horror villain
These are my top 5 favorite freddy make-up designs.
1. Nightmare on elm street 3 dream warriors.
2. Nightmare on elm street.
3. Nightmare on elm street 2 freddy's revenge.
4. Freddy's dead the final nightmare.
5. West cravens new nightmare.
I actually liked the remake look
I like the makeup job at 4:29 the best. By the way, has everyone seen Robert Englund in Phantom of the Opera yet?
I dont like 4:30 makeup cus it looks like a sausage troche and is too smooth. The part 2 (the one with red eyes, that was at the end of the video) feels the best for me and is associated with fried sausage's taste. The 4:30 associates with a sausage troche, as i said already
Another great video!!
