Hi I was born in 1960 and just started listening to you today and I think you're really awesome. I don't know if this will help or apply to you but I grew up in a house where my parents argued constantly. When I started having relationships they were difficult. I finally realized that because I never had a good example of a loving relationship, I just didn't know how to find peace and love with a partner. Love everything 70's. thanks

I was Born in 1960, I seen all this in real time.
You have to understand in the 70s we had different genres, Rock, Soul, Pop, R&B, Funk, Country, Folk, Disco, Punk, New Wave, Rap.
Each genre had fantastic music. We listened to it all!!!
You can spend the rest of your life discovering music of the past and still never get to it all. Just relax and enjoy the journey!

Same here (Jan. 1960). I did not listen to Disco, rap, punk in the 1970s, except for the rare piece. Plenty of the rest though. This one is just one of those treasures I DID listen to often.

The legendary Al Jackson Jr was the drummer for the track, "Let's Stay Together" as well as the house drummer for the Stax Records House Band a member of Booker T and the MG's.
Al Jackson Jr was known as the "Human Time Keeper". As his early reputation in the studio grew, superstars from Aretha Franklin to Eric Clapton began to demand his percussive genius. Rolling Stone Magazine ranks Al Jackson Jr at #9 among it's list of 100 Greatest Drummers of All Time.

Al Green, Marvin Gaye and Barry white were 3 popular singers in the early to mid 70s. Famous for their "Baby making music", there are thousands of cultural references in movies and tv referring to these songs and this type of "soul music".

First timer - Al brought me here! Really enjoyed this reaction. That tasty beat was courtesy of the legendary Al Jackson, Jr. who co-wrote this song. He was such a highly-regarded drummer that his nickname was “The Human Timekeeper.”

The top R&B artist in the early 70s. The chicks would melt when this guy sang. We had so much great music in the 60s and 70s, we could barely keep up with it. Every other day a new song was released. And while I'm primarily a "Rock/Blues" guy, the music in that era of all genres was freaking excellent. Country western, R&B, Pop, whatever, it was "primetime" for all music during that 60s through the 70s period.

Nice choice! The Hi Records rhythm section always kept it beautifully simple and with the Memphis Horns and Al Green's extraordinary voice the label had a string of hits with Green in the early seventies. A lot of great records, I'd recommend "Take Me To The River" which was covered by Talking Heads and others.

So… Al Jackson Jr. is the drummer on this track. As you go through these songs from the 60s/70s you will hear him a lot. He was a founding member of “Booker T. And the MGs”, the house band at Stax Records. The band recorded their own music as well- Booker T is a master of the mighty Hammond B3. Good stuff at Stax.

Al Green's sequence of early 70s albums from Gets Next to You, the album before this, through Explores Your Mind is as good a six album run as anyone ever had. I think Call Me is the high point but each is great. Similar to what Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder were doing at the same time Green would do multiple overdubs of his vocals doing call and response with himself and becoming a one-man chorus. Al Jackson Jr's work with Booker T & the MG's, the Stax Records house band (Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Wilson Pickett, Eddie Floyd) is a rabbit hole worth going down, too.

The drums are fantastic. It's almost a country rhythm, a train on tracks, which is so rare for a beautiful ballad like this, and elevates the whole thing beyond being just a sweet, slow love song.
