    Mangaladevi Temple History
As per legend, the divine trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara approached the Mother Goddess to save the world from the wrath of Andasura. Unable to cope with the overwhelming power of the Mother Goddess, Andasura bolted towards the sea to save his life. The mother taking the form of Rakteshwari, also jumped into the sea and killed him with the trident. Her victory over Andasura caused waves of happiness all over the world.
After killing Andasura, the mother made a declaration. “In Tretayuga, Sri Hari will incarnate as Bhargavarama to destroy evil kings, taking twenty-one expeditions around the world. The empire won from the kings will be offered to sage Kashyapa in charity. Then he will pray to Lord Shiva to grant him the land in which he could live and continue his penance. Lord Shiva will ask him to obtain the land from the king of the oceans.”
Thousands of years after Mother Goddess’s declaration, Lord Vishnu was incarnated in the form of Lord Parashurama to protect the world from the kshatriya kings. He annihilated the Kshatriyas who symbolized evil and tyranny. As per Lord Shiva’s instructions, he asked a piece of land from the ocean king to do penance. When Varuna refuses, he throwed his axe and the distance of the land covered by the axe was vacated by the ocean. Thus, the land retrieved from the ocean was known as Parashurama Shristi.
The spot where the Mother Goddess killed Andasura was the exact spot that Lord Parashurama chose for his penance. As per Mother Goddess’s instructions, Lord Parashurama built a grand shrine and installed Mother Goddess’s image in the shape of a linga along with a Dharapatra. The place became a hollowed one where the devotees prayed for fulfillment of their desires. This is the very same place where the present Sri Mangala Devi Shrine stands.
Centuries after Parashurama, Bangaraja ruled the kingdom of Tulunadu. On a certain night while he was sleeping, goddess Mangaladevi appeared in his dream and revealed to him that at the spot where Nethravathi and Phalguni rivers converge, there was a mound under which lay the remains of a shrine. Mother goddess bade him to recover from the remains the Shivashakti Linga and the Dharapatra and install them in a newly built shrine. Thus, a beautiful shrine was built and the Linga symbolizing Shiva and Shakti, along with Dharapatra was installed.
At a later stage, the mangaladevi temple was once again renovated when it was found in a dilapidated condition by Kundavarma under the guidance of Macchendranatha and Goraknatha (the holy saints of the Natha cult).
The place name Mangalapura owes its origin to this temple of Mangaladevi. The pious people even today believe that the worship of Mangaladevi brings them prosperity and happiness.
The temple has a special significance for unmarried woman. Maidens who observe Managala Parvathi Vrata will have their wish of having a suitable match, fulfilled. They consume the kumkuma prasda for 21 days and pray to maa mangaladevi. And once their wish is fulfilled, they get married here in the temple premises.
Even today, heads of Kadri Yogirajmutt visit Mangaladevi temple on the first day of Kadri temple festival and offer prayer and silk cloth to the Goddess.
Bali utsava happens in the temple during Navaratri and that is a unique event coz it generally does not happen during Navaratri event.
