  • By the time Brian was 11 years old, he was already smoking close to a pack of cigarettes a day. In this video from CDC’s Tips From Former Smokers® campaign, he talks about how he smoked during his youth, marriage, and throughout his career in the U.S. Air Force. He had a heart attack at age 35 and spent months in hospital rooms. Brian died in 2022 at age 68 after suffering from smoking-related health problems for more than 30 years.

So sorry Brian. My dad was a 3+ pack a day smoker. He smoked 57 years from age 12 till 70. He quit when he was given 1 week to live. He lived 6 weeks after quitting. He had late stage 4 lung cancer. His coughs started to sound like he was choking to death. Seeing my dad in the living room in a hospital bed was beyond heartbreaking.

I‘m so sorry. Like words can’t even express how I feel.
I am 35 and quit smoking 10 years ago, at the age of 25. It was my last cigarette. I started chain smoking at 15. I had my first cigarette at 12 and loved it. Many people don’t believe it but I still crave it so badly that I came very close to relapsing. I also have regular dreams at night where I am smoking again. May God give the strength to all those who want to quit and even more to those who come forward so that they can make a difference. Thank you, Sir. I hope you will get another chance to get the heart you need.

Look at it this way. As a smoker, you were in constant drug withdrawal 24 hours a day! As you became accustomed to the constant drug withdrawal, it became your new normal. So, when you lit up a cigarette, it SEEMED as though it was enjoyable! Only because it gave temporary relief, a pause, from the drug withdrawal in which it caused in the first place! You smoked to achieve the normal which you already had before you ever started !!!

I just lost my Mom too smoking a few days ago. I haven't left my room in 2 weeks cause I knew it was the end while She was in the hospital . Crying as I type this. She had Cancer of the lungs, blockages in her heart. Due to the chemo and radiation treatment it weakened her immune system. She caught the flu and that was it. I can't get out of bed I'm so depressed and mad. She was only 62. I also lost my Father to smoking 8 years ago. I don't think I can go on anymore. It hurts to bad.

It is because of people like Brian that more and more people are quitting and not having to suffer. More people like him need to share there story on how dangerous and deadly cigarettes are.

You cannot quit just like that ...
It might take you several attempts... and just will power is not enough to get through this cuz I know what's it's like being a smoker... our thinking, planning for the day revolves around cigarette..
And the moment that urge is there... no amount of will power will suffice
I would say to everyone out there whose really bent on to quitting ... consult a doctor/psychiatrist

Many of us in certain age groups and in certain parts of the country did have this ingrained into us. My mom would send me to the store down the street to buy her cigarettes when I was 10.
There was smoking in stores, restaurants, planes... everywhere.
I started when I was 15. I finally stopped smoking 4 months ago. It was hard at first since I didn’t want to quit smoking. It was part of who I was. I didn’t think I would be able to. I had tried many times before. I was successful this time and I am so proud of myself!!! I vow to never smoke again. I know it would be hard to quit again because they are so addictive.

I used to think cigarettes were cool and if I quit I would miss them for the rest of my life, now I see they're just a stupid drug and big tobacco brands want to keep us hooked forever to take our money and health. You CAN stop using tobacco products. We know it is not easy, but the benefits always outweigh the struggle. There is free help available if you need it. By calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW, you can speak with a trained cessation counselor, who can offer advice, support, and information on local resources that may be in your area. We also recommend you check out our quit guide for lots of helpful tips and information: CDC.gov/quit. Stay positive and keep trying until you succeed!

Everybody knows that smoking causes cancer and heart disease-- But this isn't what killed my Mom.
COPD has been talked about more in the past few years. This is a
disease that makes it hard to get all of the air out of your lungs, thus
making it hard to get air in... Making it difficult to breath -- This
was only an accomplice in the murder of my mother.
Something nobody really talks about, and the thing that actually took my mother is called PAD, Peripheral artery disease.
The chemicals in Cigarettes cause your veins and arteries to constrict.
Eventually this causes them to begin to collapse and you begin to
loose circulation-- especially to your arms and legs.
    In the
past 9 months, it began to happen to Mom. All of a sudden moms legs
began to swell and get ugly, painful blisters. This is because fluids
that go into the legs couldn't get out (the veins had deteriorated too
    far).
These blisters, not able to get enough oxygen (because the
COPD, and poor circulation) ulcerated... Even though we were seeing a
doctor and using very expensive medicine, the wounds just weren't
    getting better.
The thing about wounds that don't heal, and that
aren't getting the nutrients they need, is that the tissue begins to
die... they also don't get the healing factors that fight everyday
    bacteria.
In a shorter time that you could possibly imagine,
Mom's wounds got infected, and she had to go to the hospital. They were
able to surgically remove the dead tissue from her legs (without having
to amputate), but unfortunately for everybody who knew Mom, the
bacteria that had invaded was mostly resistant to drugs.
    A
resistant Bacteria, COPD not allowing enough healing Oxygen, and a
circulatory system that didn't allow for delivery of healing factors
    created a perfect storm.
Cigarettes killed my Mom at 1pm on March
    16th, 2020. It wasn't Cancer. It wasn't Heart Disease. It wasn't a
stroke or heart attack (Although, cigarettes are responsible for these
in others.) My mom was killed the PAD with COPD as a secondary factor.
Cigarettes are bad. Everybody kinda knows this. It's your own personal choice, if you smoke, please consider stopping.
I don't know if stopping would have saved my moms life 9 months ago...
the damage had begun. But a year ago... She knew they were bad...
Three years ago... Maybe the COPD wouldn't have been so bad that her
    lips sometime turned blue...
All I know, if my Mother had never smoked cigarettes she wouldn't have died yesterday.

Brian your poor wife and children ,I could only find sympathy they breathed all that shit in their lungs and didn't have any say in the second hand damage, I told my girlfriend if she gets lung desease I'll light her cigarettes and place them in her mouth , replying it is what I believe she would still want and I would do it because I love her,and asking her to stop for my health has never been attempted. I to now have breathing troubles from my 30years of second hand smoke .

It’s not that you don’t care. ..it’s that you can’t stop. I’m 21, started smoking 6 years ago, I’m now on day 4 without cigarettes and it’s awful but I want to quit for good.

U know the sad thing about it is , someone died , and we don't know how they died , but you got saved from a heart from someone else who died , and it saved u , u who abused your body and heart many years with cigarettes. My question is who was it and how did that person die ? And if they had a healthy heart ? Then how did they die ? Something to think about .
