We just built that shelter about 4 years ago. A lot of the trail in the mud is slowly getting moved to new built single track. Shooting for a 100 mile backpacking destination in a couple years.
That umbrella was a stroke of genius. You certainly tax your skills carrying assorted things in your hands back, waist, balancing on the ever changing terrain.Amazing fellow thou art.Too bad new shoes have to get all wet and muddy on the first few days of wear.
Again with the "just in time" rain management! Well done! And nice of you to give your new shoes their baptism in mud. Hope it was less slippery given the new tread. Nice to see green forest to walk in, despite the mud, and not just road walk all the time. Alternate a bit . . Hike on! Tortoise
Hey Matt, when you get to the areas of Scioto Trail SP, Pike Lake SP, Sinking Spring and Peebles, If there is anything you need let me know. I could meet you in these areas.
That leaking natural gas smell is always disconcerting. Hard to know if it is a leak or just natural. I've hiked by a stream where you could actually see it bubbling up. Those yellow butterflies are gross, because you'll see them hanging out on a pile of horse dung (trail apples). Nice little shelter.
I bought new balance a lot, when they were still made in the usa (which started 1978 and ended about 2010). But surprisingly, they still fit well for people with wide toes.
Realy beautifull video! A happy Matt , varied terrain , lush forrest and salamanders for Taters. Ohio is a lot like my hometurf (Europe) : same terrain , same rain , same mud . Don't think to much about your mileage . I do about the same daily mileage as you but when there is mud it can be half of that. Wrenched my knee some days ago sliding into a mudhole (10 inches deep ) , so take care and go slow . Keep it up.
Unfortunately, I can’t just not think about my mileage and have any reasonable expectation of making my goal. I try not to go neurotic about it, but I do need to be consistently pushing miles.
Very nice video with you going through the forest. That last water source should have been ok since there didn’t appear to be much industry, development or agriculture in that area. Unless you didn’t show it on the video. Ohio seems to be a lot more pleasant experience than West Virginia so far. -Geo
It is often hard to tell. Mines are sometimes shown on Topamax sometimes not. And if the stream goes for any length, I don’t know if it’s houses around the corner, roads, and asphalt plant.
Day 35. ADT review while watching. Suspect you are taking southern route through Colorado? Trail passes 2 miles from my house. Would love to hike. Mile or two with you.
90$ for shoes. Must be at least the same for a hotel if you need extra zeros because your feet hurt so much. So financially might work out to equal if you get shoes more often.
Going forward we’re going to replace them at 4:50 to 500. Here it was a combination of not knowing how long they last and be delays getting them to me. Honestly, I still needed that Parkersburg zero even if I hadn’t been having some additional foot pain.
Meh, it's not like it's the AT. I've hung my hammock in shelters before. I just wait until it's about dark. Haven't had anyone show up late yet on lesser traveled trails.
Ohio looking good!
Walking twenty-five mile days is like running a marathon (26.2 m) every day. That is amazing. Good luck and thanks for sharing.
Basically trying and failing to run a marathon every day going far too slow and carrying too much weight :)
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes Good point, marathoners are not carrying a backpack.
It's so beautiful there! I don't hear much about Buckeye Trail.
Thanks. ✌🏻👊🏼

Those striped mosquitoes seem to be far more aggressive than others. Beautiful trail! Very nice oyster mushrooms on the downed log.
Absolutely gorgeous work my friend

Cant wait to see you going through Hocking Springs!

Heya. I am currently at Pike Lake SP aiming for a resupply box I had mailed to Peebles. Mostly sorted at the moment but I’ll let you know :)

Hey, taters loves those. Also dogs eat poop and yet people act like I’m unreasonable not wanting to be slobbered on…
Some of that trail was looking AT-ish. Nice shelter 👏👏👏
OOH! Your Trail Angel lady couldn't have a nicer back yard!
It was a really really cool space. Her living quarters were small, but I just be out in the yard all the time.
Ahaaa! New shoes 😂😎✌️

They don’t feel quite as wide as the Altra toe box but they’re the best I’ve found. Second pair seems to be holding up

i'd be staying on that beautiful gravel road

At least so far each state has felt like a change and an improvement. So as always, I expect things to get worse at some point.
Many times i set up a tent inside a ahelter.
Do you mind sharing the brand of those more durable underwear?
McDavid. They’re from Walmart in the camping isle. I tried them because I was there grabbing the tape and x bandages they are sold right next to.
If I remember correctly you are on the NCT trail right now and it REEEEALLY doesnt take the direct rout through Ohio.
Pretty much. Endless squiggles. That’s how they get 480 some miles out of the state.

Plan is for the southern route since it goes by Canyon city where my parents are
You walked by that CHICKEN OF THE WOODS FUNGUS! Delicious 😊
That wasn't chicken of the woods, looked liked oysters.
What do the yellow stars on the map at the beginning of the video mean?
That is just how Dennis marked the cities
Oil and gas all kinds of leaks and old pipes ,wells old mines everywhere in PA, Ohio , West Va it sucks trying to find clean water

You should change your church name
I have mad respect for your endeavor, but the tent inside the shelter is such a bad look, man.

It's hardly a big deal since no one is going to show up, and that being said, it rained that night....
