@@thomasplinguidy4588 He didn’t say he deserved it. He said “it had to happen” because Greg got cocky on the field and wasn’t listening to his coach. So in that case he was right. Greg had to learn that he couldn’t behave that way and that he didn’t know everything, and up until that point there was no talking to him. That’s what he meant by “it had to happen.”

So true. He looked exactly what I would have imagined Mike Brady to look like: tall, very handsome, and executive. Florence Henderson said Reed was born to play the role of Mike Brady, and I very much agree. Although he resented the role, it’s always been my philosophy that a truly gifted person is at their best when they’re required to take on a task they consider onerous. It requires them to either make the best of things or allow themselves to be eaten up by resentment. So they cull all their skill and talent and make lemonade out of lemons. I’ve seen nearly everything Reed has ever done on screen, and his portrayal of Mike Brady was some of his best work (IMHO). I think perhaps the biggest reason for that is because Mike Brady and Robert Reed were two completely different people.

    • @mls617983

@@TVHouseHistorianthey were two completely different people with one exception. Robert Reed loved the kids on and off the screen. It was said that Robert Reed found a real family in the Brady Bunch. The cast including Florence Henderson and Ann B. Davis, were very close. Susan Olsen said he was a father figure to the kids. I read that Robert Reed once said he wished he was the father of six kids. He must've liked kids.

I disagree...some days I did not feel very social, so a "hello" would be rather disingenuous not to mention as a teenager, the common belief in my era is that parents kinda suck....why? Because they can get on my nerves with their mindless nonsense. So, I'm not obligated by mood or purpose to dispense with false pleasantries on such occasion.
Only a milksop would worry themselves about saying "hello" everytime they walk through the front door. If I wasn't asking nor expecting a "hello" and I wasn't, then I'm under zero obligation to provide it.
      It's that simple.

Great scene. It is so funny how differently I see this show as I have aged. The Brady Bunch came out in 1969 when I was four years old.
While I do remember watching it when it was originally on in the later years, it wasn't until it ran in syndication that I really got to know the show.
Not surprisingly, I watched it through the eyes of the Brady kids for many years. I grew up in a very happy home, so I could relate to many of the episodes and the issues that the kids were going through.
But now, as a 58-year-old, I really see it through the eyes of Mike and Carol and, yes, even Alice.

It was Season 2, episode 1 which was aired on September 25, 1970. Notice that Marcia no longer wear twin ponytails and parted her hair on the left side, so Marcia is parted her hair in the middle, and so does Jan. Jan does wear a single ponytail, but for Season 2, Jan is like Marcia by hanging her hair free. It is titled The Dropout. The guest is Don Drysdale, a MLB Hall of Fame of the 1960s.

You're right. The closest he came was, "Mom, Dad, I broke the vase. I should have told you, I really meant to, but it was the camping trip I really wanted." But there were no tears, just sort of a high-pitch upset voice, as if he was about to cry.

Yes. He admitted in his Book that he and his Five Co-Stars got quite Egotistical when they had their Group. They even went into the Schwartz's Office and gave ultimatums. It was 1973 and the show was still hot! Next Year they got the word that they were being cancelled after Five Years and 126 Episodes and to this day they've never lived it down. Even with this House Flipping Show they play it like it's their Trump Card so to speak.

@@kor8267 He knew exactly how to handle this situation from start to finish. Greg actually had the audacity to believe he was Cooperstown-bound even though he was still a kid in high school.

I live in Canada and, looking at this episode fifty years after it aired, it could do the parents of some young hockey players some good. Some parents have got so carried away that programs have been implemented to prevent abuse of officials at games. Instead of berating your kid's coach, or the game official, try to relax and deal with the reality that your kid is not going to the big leagues.
