  • The Sony A99II absolutely has my favorite spec list of all time. While using one of the most amazing full frame 42mp sensors on the market today from the A7RII, the A99II is still able to maintain 12fps with full AF and AE. But there is always more to the story so let’s dive a bit deeper with this Sony A99II Review
    Purchase the Sony Alpha A99II:

    This Sony Alpha A99II Review explores everything from dynamic range, sports shooting, wedding photography, videography as well as Sony's A mount lenses. Unfortunately, Sigma and Tamron lenses may not be creating future A mount glass so check out the lens options from Sony. Sony's 42MP sensor from the A7RII is making a comeback and compared to the Canong 5D Mark IV and Nikon D810, it should make you pause and reconsider.

    Damn this camera is soo understated and I love it. IBIS 42 at 12fps EyE autofocus in a god damn DSLR. People are sleeping on this camera. And the video quality looks great. 12 FPS with the Profoto D2 and getting 42 megapixels with eye auto and at -4 ev with that screen I love that no one is talking about this it’s like a secret camera.

      I wonder what Sony will do with it. Technically there is no reason to make a translucent mirror camera anymore since mirrorless autofocus is now amazing but the camera body, controls, quality are all AMAZING! I was always hoping the A9 would have been based on the A99 body rather than the A7

    Great vid as always Dan, fully agree with you that A99 II is a still focused camera. If one is going to use it majority to film with manual focus, then might as well get the A7 series.
    Also can you do a review for the sigma 50-100? Is it true that it's slow in auto-focus? I know that its made for portrait, I'm just wondering because I do a good amount of sports and that's quite important. Thanks :))

    I am really surprised about the low light problem compared to the a7R ii. Has there been any firmware updates to address this, if it is possible?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 років тому +2

      Mostly price. I don't use them personally and it is a ton of money to rent one for a couple weeks. And I'm still pissed it only shoots 4k video in motion jpeg.

    • @TausifHussain
      @TausifHussain 7 років тому +1

      Would you say getting a GH5 or a Sony A7Sii over that is a better decision if i am a video shooter and i want access to 4k, and slow frame rates like 120fps in 1080. I only have a couple cheaper EFS lenses for Canon 80D and i am selling everything now to move to a better Cam. If so, even between A7Sii and GH5 how do i decide between them?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 років тому +3

      Personally I am going for the GH5. There is no denying that the A7SII will have better dynamic range and low light ability but if you can make the GH5 work, I prefer the camera itself, the system, and the ergonomics. You can actually use your EFS lenses on the GH5 if you wanted. But it really depends on what you are shooting and the setup

    TRUE sportscam,
    dual card slot, and 1500 $ cheaper than A9
    Sony sensor low light capability is so awesome these days,
    Sony SLT finally achieved perfections, no more light loss issue.

    Dan believe it or not I"m still interested in purchasing a Sony A99II because of all the wonderful things you pointed out in your GREAT VIDEO! One clarification I'd love to get from you is this about the JOY STICK. I've heard that the joy stick actually worked when you first pushed it strait down to activate it and then you would toggle it left right or north south. When you had the camera and were reviewing it did you try that or hear about that and do you know if that is the way it was designed to work? I think that another you tuber named Gary Friedman goes over this in his video reviews of the A 99MII as well. Please get back to me . My name is Jerry Eisner. Thanks so very much for all your videos and attention to detail.

      Hey! Honestly I can't remember about the joystick although I probably wouldn't get this camera today even though I loved it unless you already own A mount Sony lenses. Cameras like the A7III and A7RIII are the future for Sony and there lenses

    I tried this one and A9. I loved using A99M2 and I absolutely hated using A9. In the end I am staying with Canon, hoping that Canon someday will bring mirrorless to its perfect usability and ideal ergonomics. Sony might have a superior sensors but otherwise Sony pretty much suck.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 років тому

      2nd version. Personally I felt like it was not sharp enough, especially towards the corners for this camera and it definitely did not like shooting into the sun.

    • @kelvinlow9041

      If you were do it all over again, would you have bought the Tamron 24-70 instead?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 років тому

      I actually own the Tamron for Canon and use that on my 5D4 which you can see in the video. It's a good lens but I bought it mostly for the built in stabilization which is not needed on the A99II so I would be less likely to buy it for the A99.

      Dan Watson so which zoom lens do you recommend ?

  • @angelisone
    @angelisone 7 років тому

    Dan Watson, what app or software needed to shoot tethered /or wirelessly into Windows?
    And what is the maximum distance when shooting RAW by WiFi or NFC to Android/Wins?
    Sony really screwed many owning the Sony SLT-A99 & SLT-A77 by not providing live-view to computer.
    As we know, all Sony cameras have live-view once it's turned on but Sony cuts corner NOT provide live-view to computer like all Canon dslr can.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 років тому

      I'm not sure. I wonder if Sony can't provide live view to a computer because of the SLT mirror. Basically the same reason you can't shoot video with AF on. Either they would have to disable AF or put the camera in full auto. Not sure on that though.

    • @angelisone
      @angelisone 7 років тому

      Sony is not replying also.
      Yet all Sony cameras do live-view but they refused to make them for computers.
      Sony really doesn't make pro camera anyone.
      They make nice amateur cameras with affordable for under $3,500.00. Then forced you to buy a vertical grip because camera eats battery up very quickly.
      I see many amateurs having vertical grip to mimic to people that they are professionals.
      Well, adding the vertical grip actually weight more than regular dslr.

    as a wedding photographer would you use the a99ii for weddings?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 років тому

      Yes I would. But I have the Sony A9 right now and I would be REALLY tempted by that as well. I'm still unsure of the long term use of A mount Sony's (A99II) vs E mount and it looks like much of the future might be leaning towards E mount. What cameras are you using now?

    • @maconmomentsphoto5779

    • @learningcameras

      Then I would definitely consider the A9 for weddings. You have the dual cards, freaking crazy frame rates, full silent mode (love that), uses all your same lenses, longer battery life, AF during video (not on the A99II). Just reviewed the A9: ua-cam.com/video/xOQjS8alC1Q/v-deo.html with my wife Sally who is also a wedding photographer. I have the A9 right now so I'll be posting more on it over the next few weeks

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 років тому +1

      I have not seen anything wide spread on the A9 overheating and no one has reported the camera actually shutting down. There are a few cases of a warning popping up but Sony is already saying they are looking in to it so I would not be very concerned.

      Go with the A7III. Sony has no reason to continue this series. AF is now just as good on mirrorless cameras and the new lens lineup for E mount is more than enough. My guess is that Sony is done with the A99 although I REALLY hope they re-use the body on this because the ergonomics and flip screen were AMAZING! The A9 should have been in this body

    Has some great features, but since having the A6000, I just HATE the Sony Menu system It is a monster and a mess at the same time. ( Did you notice any signs of overheating when you were running that 42MP running at 12 FPS? ) I had a Nikon back until about 2005, so never used it for 13 years, I go and buy a Canon DSLR and my fingers and memory are automatically searching for the buttons that were on my old Nikon - So the terrible Sony menu sticks in my mind.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 років тому +1

      I would say the A99II. 4k on the 5D4 is almost unusable because there is a 1.7X crop and it records only to motion jpeg which is a horrible format. You also can't output 4k via HDMI. There is no autofocus in video though on the A99II

    • @learningcameras

      I would probably lean towards the A7RII because of the AF performance but if you really don't need autofocus, the A99 has a better flip screen, bigger battery, and dual cards which is great.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 років тому

      Tell that to the thousands of videographers using the Canon 5D Mark III and Mark IV for everything from wedding video to major films: www.recordingreviews.com/shot-on-cannon-5d-mark-ii/
      There are just some areas of video that these large sensor small cameras are great for. Obviously Sony went to great extremes to ensuring video features in this camera. This is more of a knock on the translucent mirror that is begging to offer more downsides than upsides

    • @puddytat62
      @puddytat62 7 років тому

      Yup I am one of them... thankfully not weddings. The 5D M3 still has some decent dynamic range and generally pleasing look and a price point that was decent. Also easy to get into a venue with. We are not going to get into this crop sensor vs full frame sensor discussion because that is just a rabbit hole. Those of us doing this for 30 plus years are sick of the endless discussion of full frame vs crop. Tomato Tomattooo.. I'd prefer a real cinema camera with crop than a DSLR doing full frame and struggling with it... like the overheating issues of some sony cameras.
      Like the link you sent.. ... I think all of those were the 5D M2 .vs M3 Wonder why? I thought the M2 had a ton of moire vs the M3....
      But interesting link... Of course hard to compete with an Alexa

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  7 років тому

      Yep. I think I remember people saying the M3 was a bit softer than the M2. I remember a few tests showing how to sharpen the M3 to make it look better. Maybe that is why.

      I had the A77 and then the A77ii. Now I got the A7R. I love the image quality of the A7R but I really don't like the handling of the E mount at all. I am saving for the A99ii because ergonomics while shooting is more important to me than a few millimeters in my camera bag. And there are a lot more large aperture lenses (like 70-200 f2.8, instead of f4) for A mount than E mount. They just make the lenses longer for E mount or add an adapter so the rig is basically the same size and weight but you lose buttons and ergonomics with the E mount. Lots of people love E mount, I don't.

    i lost 1000 dollars selling three Canon mount lenses just after three months of use. So it doesn't make any sense, financially , to switch, especially that you can find now the 5div for 2700 dollars. It may be called gray market, but they are perfectly Japanese cameras, no dofference whatsoever. Sony is 3300, is tough to find, preorder, wait a lot, season is starting. Then, is not only the lenses di per se that you have for a system, it is the SHEER AMOUNT of used, mark 1, mark 2 lenses at Canon, third party Sigma, Tamron, Rokinon, with many versions themselves, dirt cheap, high quality. Basically you can build from 8 mm fisheye to 600 mm supertele a system with 3-4000 dollars. There is no way you can do that with Sony, let alone the fact that the supertelephoto you won't find them at all or very few. So, history, tradition, they cannot be invented in 10 years. Then again, Canon 5div is good enough in everything, and amazing for usability, so why change? Of course i salivate to the 42 mpx, but if you really need that for macro or product work, you can find now a 5ds for 2000 dollars on ebay

      and , of course, there are the COLORS in video at Canon, straight out of the camera. Never i was able to get satisfying results grading Slogs in Sony, i am not an advanced colorist, and 99 percent of us aren't. With very few exceptions, all the graded Slog footage from Sony that i saw online is over contrasty, weird instagram feel of filters, forced. Canon just looks great out of the camera. Between some more noise in the shadows and 1-2 stops of dr less in light coming of windows, i choose nice, bold, alive, rich colors in the main part of the frame
