Thanks for the refresher course. I've had mine since about 1973, gearing up for a couple of summers in NW Wyoming.

Great video - I bought my Optimus Ranger 99 in the early 1980s and it's still going strong - they're absolutely bomb proof if you look after them - I've still got its original box and instructions. Compared to modern gas stoves like the Jetboil, it can seem a bit of a faff, but it'll never let you down (especially in extreme weather / very sub-zero conditions).

I'm about to get one myself (in a bit of a rough condition). Do you have any advice on maintenance or how to look after them? Thank you

I bought my 99 in 1978. I’ve taken it on backpacking and bicycle trips every year sine. It’s had two rebuilds, parts are still available, and I wouldn’t consider any other stove.

      It's a good one.
      I love the square box Optimus/Primus stoves. 8R, 99, 199.

in the 1970's for thru-hikers, the svea 123r and the optimus 99 were the most popular choices. similar in weight if they were stripped down but the svea was better if you were preparing freeze-dries and only needed to boil water, but the 99 was better if you had to cook real foods as it was much more stable. freeze-dries were very expensive back then so most hikers had to make the best of what they could get from supermarkets and health food stores, and had to dehydrate a lot of their own foods. the 99's cookpot/cover was also much larger than the svea's pot/cover.

Awesome stove! I want one! Why did you add fuel at the base and light it before lighting the stove? What is the purpose of that?

Thanks! These stoves need a preheat to start. Alcohol (methanol) burns clean and doesn’t soot up the burner.

I was just gifted one of these. What kind of fuel does it burn? Thanka

Stefan Stratton Hi! They’re great stoves.
They burn “white gas”. That’s Coleman fuel, or naphtha. Not kerosene.
      Enjoy!

What are the optimus pumps on ebay that might or might not go with this stove? Just got this stove for 2 dollars today at a yardsale.

henry gilman Nice score. The pumps and the caps that they use pre-pressurize the tank. So after the prime they are already up to full pressure. Worthwhile in the very cold.
