+MegaSugarlump Absolutely. Theyre all good. Dennis [ original} Belinda Carlisle and { for me} Marianne Faithfull on Broken English is the best cover of all.
first time I've heard this version and she did a very good job I'm sure I'll listen to it again, people tend to stubbornly stick to the first version they know and compare everything else to that, once you're aware of that effect you can relax about it and enjoy all the versions you like in a more open way
OMG. I had NO idea Belinda ever did this!!! I cannot even tell you my reaction when I heard this. I **LOVE** Marianne's original version of this AND I also love Belinda!! The two together were just incredible!!! Wow!
I want every recording of this song. Belinda, have always loved you and love your version. Marianne's version is the one that I remember from ages, and have loved her from the beginning until the end! Rock on Belinda Love you and your version too/!
Dr. Hook, Bobby Bare, and Lucinda Williams did it too. This is a good version. Belinda Carlisle is a good singer. The lead singer from Hook did a version too.
As a B side to one of the many CD’s I bought as a teen that Belinda made. Here we are 20+ years later I feel compelled to listen again. Belinda made a beautiful cover and introduced me to this song. She clearly adored the song enough to bother to cover it. Must have been close to her heart and she’s awesome, therefore, can cover whatever song she wishes and not care for negative criticism. Another thing I adore about her. A beautiful living legend ❤️
I’ve always really loved Belinda’s Version. I wish she’d put it officially on her Woman and A Man album instead of a b-side. Belinda’s torchy voice is so well suited to these kinds of songs. I really love this.
I love the original version of this song. It's one of the best songs ever written in my humble opinion... This version more than does it justice. Other than the original, I've not heard a better recording :-) But would I expect any less from Belinda Carlisle? Nope, truly class act.
parfois je veux revenir vers Paris et ses soleils, c'est attirant comme un puits de soleil mais c'est seulement beau vu de loin, en fait c'est la nostalgie.
for @mattyboyd4045 I agree with you and in another style Hanne BOEL's version is also great. I love this song with Marianne, it takes me to the guts, an excellent ballad in a universe where I would like to be!
As a matter of fact, the song was originally recorded by Dr. Hook in 1974 and by Marianne Faithful in 1979. It was written by Shel Silverstein. I prefer the original from Dr. Hook as it seems to have more feeling but prefer this version to the Marianne Faithful one.
Just discovered that Belinda had done a cover of this much covered song. This is just as good as the Dr. Hook original version. Shebs writing style was unequaled by anyone other than Maybe kris Kristofferson .
Shel Silverstein wrote it. I hafta say, though, I like Marianne Faithfull's version the best - it has that lightly desperate, broken edge that fits the song.
Steve, Faithfull's version so moves the soul. It has been used in a number of movies; but the one that catches the spirit, was the basis of the story in a great European film from 1981 "Montenegro"; which can be downloaded at The Pirate Bay.
Marianne Faithfull didn't write this, and her version isn't even that much better. It was just better-timed and no one hit the Zamfir or the Flashdance button on the synth when she was recording it. I have to agree with didoit; I want to hear Nico's version.
geschrieben von Shel Silverstein für Dr Hook and The Medicine Show... ok, Belinda Carlisle und Marianne Faithful machen das nicht allzu schrecklich, aber die wahre Stimme für diesen Song hat Dennis Locorriere, The Voice of Dr Hook :)
Carlisle pronounced the word “orange” the American way, while Faithful pronounced it the English way. I reckon the American way ruins the song. But that’s just me. Not a judgement. I’m Australian and accustomed to the English sound.
I love this song and I love Belinda Carlisle, but I am not liking this combination at all. The over production of the background music is terrible. It is distracting and adds nothing that Belinda couldn't have done with just an acoustic and her. The raw sound of Marianne Faithfull's version is fantastic, you feel that she is singing from her soul. This version is lacking in depth. Belinda has a natural ability to capture the essence of a story with her voice. She didn't quite manage it here.
OMG This sucks.. Sri IMHO it misses the spot, I saw Belinda live and she was hot, this one does nothing for me. I think she should cover Amy Winehouse stuff and leave classics like this alone pse tnxbye
Sure beats hearing the croaky old Faithful do it. Bel's done a fine cover here, and everything she does once again-cover or not seems to be WAY better than her worst ever moment-the truly horrible 'Love Never Dies'-yuucckk! And I can't even blame Diane Warren-queen of sop-for it shockingly. Rick Nowels, Charlotte Caffey and her brother-they all deserve a bloody slap, as does the idiot who made it a single for the UK. No wonder it was only one that failed the Top 50 throughout her impressive almost 10 year chart run. But UK54 is still WAY too high for it. All I can say is-nice singing Bel, shape it's on that pitiful bleurgh! of a tune.
The backing band has slaughtered this song. It's horribly overdone and does Ms Carlisle, who has an excellent voice, a great injustice and I don't think Shel Silverstein would have been impressed either.. Nicki Gillis had a far nicer backing for this song.
On the disappointing side. Marianne Faithfull did this the best and made it a great classic. I would've thought Belinda who has that similar sultry scratchy voice that she would be able to do it justice, but alas not so much. The song should be sang with a poignant sadness the way Marianne did it. Belinda seems to just be singing the words, but not feeling them. And not knocking Belinda as I think she's awesome, but just not here. It could be the music arrangement on this too.
I’m addicted to Marianne Faithfull’s version, and now I’m addicted to Belindas too!!!! One of the best songs ever.
I didn't know that Belinda had done her version of this great song . I love it. Very well done Belinda Carlisle
Does it matter who first recorded it , just enjoy the different versions of a stunning song that captures such vivid emotions
+MegaSugarlump Absolutely. Theyre all good. Dennis [ original} Belinda Carlisle and { for me} Marianne Faithfull on Broken English is the best cover of all.
you're so Right....just enjoy!!!!

Cory M yeah was dr hook original , not marianne
Original is by dr. Hook

Lord take me now,my life is now complete!!!I have always loved this song, and love Belinda!!!I'm in heaven!!!Ahhh I love me some Belinda
a song before its time swowing fhe effects of depression fab version
Magnifiquement interprété.

Belinda has enough great songs of her own so doesn't really need to do covers but sings the song beautifully, as she always does. A real class act!
I’ve always really loved Belinda’s Version. I wish she’d put it officially on her Woman and A Man album instead of a b-side. Belinda’s torchy voice is so well suited to these kinds of songs. I really love this.

Agree
Excellent cover!
It sounds great. You clearly can understand the story even it's so sad
I think she did an awesome version of this song.
Thanks for the upload mate. 👍🏻
Not heard this version for donkeys years.
Great song whoever does it.
First time I hear this version.
Love hers, Mariannes and Dr Hooks take on it.
All 3 make it thier own.
Lucinda Williams has an incredible version, too.
Thank you! Been trying to find this for years, it wasn't on the Australian album.....
The original version of this song was preformed by DR Hook and the Medicine show, and has a decidedly more country and western feel to it.
parfois je veux revenir vers Paris et ses soleils, c'est attirant comme un puits de soleil mais c'est seulement beau vu de loin, en fait c'est la nostalgie.
Some words should be unspoken, some things should be undone. Some songs should stay uncovered...
But this song isn't one. Excellent cover by a still sexy Go-Go girl.
This song requires a broken voice not a pink lolipop interpretation. Lucy Jordan is completely desperate, not planing a cocatail party
So it is, pal!!
Truer words have rarely been spoken on UA-cam.
Good to see there are still some persons who can distinguish between good music and a sexy go-go girls twittering!
This is a fine cover.
for @mattyboyd4045
I agree with you and in another style Hanne BOEL's version is also great. I love this song with Marianne, it takes me to the guts, an excellent ballad in a universe where I would like to be!
Sorry folks, I love MF but this kicks butt too. Written by Shel Silverstein!
Original version was by Marianne Faithful as it was wrote for her.
Nope, Dr. Hook's version is the original.
+Argflugan If Marianne Faithful wrote it how is Dr Hook the original, Did she write it for them?
She didn't write it. Shel Silverstein did, for Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show, in 1974. MF covered it in 1979.
+Bella-Donna ... it was written by Shel Silverstein for Dr Hook and the Medicine Show. Marianne Faithful covered it.
It wasn't written for her! she wrote it, but Belinda Carlisle sings a lovely version of it
As a matter of fact, the song was originally recorded by Dr. Hook in 1974 and by Marianne Faithful in 1979. It was written by Shel Silverstein. I prefer the original from Dr. Hook as it seems to have more feeling but prefer this version to the Marianne Faithful one.
enjoyed around camp fire in africa. thx.

très émouvante voix
creds to Belinda Carlisle for taking this one on. I, too, could not have imagined her having the voice to take this on!
This was never released in the US either
🎤🎼💯🎵
yes
Nobody can beat Mariannes song of it .
Not bad at all. Didnt know Belinda could put SO MUCH Feeling in her Voice
I’m old school. Dr. Hook did it best.
💜💜💜👏👏👏
Shel Silverstein wrote it. I hafta say, though, I like Marianne Faithfull's version the best - it has that lightly desperate, broken edge that fits the song.
She looks like Geri Halliwell in this photo .
this is a good version,,, better than Bobbi Bare,,,,now let's her do 'Why'd ya Do It?'
Behhhh
This one had a better ending. However I would like to hear the drums I think I've given a little bit more of a nice sound to it.
No one will ever top Marianne Faithfull's version..
klingt wie das original gut gemacht
No one can touch Marianne Faithfull on this but Nicki Gillis and Belinda do good covers too
Steve, Faithfull's version so moves the soul.
It has been used in a number of movies; but the one that catches the spirit, was the basis of the story in a great European film from 1981 "Montenegro"; which can be downloaded at The Pirate Bay.
Marian does a great version but originally it's a dr hook and the medicine machine song
Leonidas Tsouris and dr hooks version is the best
i love m.faithfuls vesion but it is not the original that was dr.hook and the medicine show
No one can top Janis Joplin at this one.
Janis was dead before this was written 🤔
Nicki Gillis does it best by far
mal eine ganz eigene Version...mit Pedalsteel-Guitar...nett!!!
No one will ever top Marianne Faithfull's version...but this one isn't terrible.
I hope I can forget this experience.
@nauort23 Sorry to disagree, but Marianne's has so much more soul to it.
To Mizz Felicia
an Marianne Faithfull geht bei diesem Lied nix vorbei, sie hat eine einmalige Stimme die man nicht covern kann
Marianne Faithfull didn't write this, and her version isn't even that much better. It was just better-timed and no one hit the Zamfir or the Flashdance button on the synth when she was recording it. I have to agree with didoit; I want to hear Nico's version.
isn't it a southern tradition to sing sorrowing songs in a happy format?
geschrieben von Shel Silverstein für Dr Hook and The Medicine Show... ok, Belinda Carlisle und Marianne Faithful machen das nicht allzu schrecklich, aber die wahre Stimme für diesen Song hat Dennis Locorriere, The Voice of Dr Hook :)
This is good but Nicki Gillis version is better
Carlisle pronounced the word “orange” the American way, while Faithful pronounced it the English way. I reckon the American way ruins the song. But that’s just me. Not a judgement. I’m Australian and accustomed to the English sound.
It's one word😂get over it😂
Not bad...

Well41 just x
OMG This sucks.. Sri IMHO it misses the spot, I saw Belinda live and she was hot, this one does nothing for me. I think she should cover Amy Winehouse stuff and leave classics like this alone pse tnxbye
how dare she

Mariannes voice sounds like shes been there and done it!! Belindas good but doesnt have the depth!
On the disappointing side. Marianne Faithfull did this the best and made it a great classic. Wow, I did. ...and it's better.
I love Belinda but this time she "is not sending us her best".
sorry but this kinda sucks
No real emotion here...not feeling it
meh.
She doesn't have the voice for this song...
